    Z Johnson/Walker v Kaymer/Garcia 1UP (10)

Here we are at 10 and it's Walker putting for birdie from a mile out... nearly, Europe will give them that. Garcia to open up a gap, from about 12 feet, hasn't hit it!

You are gutted that you have got off to this start but you never know in matchplay. You try to stay positive but when you are that far down it gets tougher and tougher.

Momentum can change at any time, though. It's matchplay, that's why we love it so much.

    4UP D Johnson/Kuchar v Westwood/Pieters (9)

The Americans blink in the bottom match - Pieters drains a solid eight-footer before Kuchar misses a short one. Still, Europe out in 40 and with an almost impossible task.

  4. American heckler sinks putt and wins $100published at 16:19 British Summer Time 30 September 2016

Take a look at the video below as an American in the Hazeltine crowd jeered Andy Sullivan and Rory McIlroy's missed putting attempts during practice on Thursday. He was invited to come and show them how it is really done.

    Z Johnson/Walker v Kaymer/Garcia 1UP (9)

Garcia lets fly at 10, which is playing 451 yards today... he finds the lip of a bunker. Here's Kaymer from the sand and he's pulled out a doozy from the top drawer, inside the Americans...

    United States v Europe

The leaderboard is looking a little red isn't it? European fans may be slightly concerned.

Relax though one and all. America have not been behind after the first session since 2006, they normally start fast. However, Europe have won three of the four Ryder Cups since then, so there's plenty of character running through European golf right now.

  7. 'First point is huge'published at 16:15 British Summer Time 30 September 2016

    2UP Reed/Spieth v Stenson/Rose (11)

    Andrew Magee
American PGA Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 live

The most important thing here is to be decisive - get up, pick your line and hit it with confidence like Patrick Reed is doing.

This first point is huge, although the Dustin Johnson game could be over any time soon...but this is huge, it might be the one that keeps the Americans in it.

Davis Love will keep it close to the cuff. Spieth and Reed will stay together and Johnson and Kuchar will stay together, but the others are likely to change.

    2UP Reed/Spieth v Stenson/Rose (11)

Henrik Stenson is a little wild on 11 and Justin Rose will have to pitch from an awkward stance on this par five.

Patrick Reed is up first though and his wedge is on point, bouncing and checking beautifully to leave 15ft or so.

Now to Rose, same outcome, different route. His ball bounces past the hole and leaves around 10ft.

Jordan Spieth for birdie and to pile the pressure on... superb. He's putting beautifully and his ball just dies into the hole, majestic weight.

Stenson, you have to make this old boy or it's back to three down... gutsy. Cracking sink under pressure.

    Z Johnson/Walker v Kaymer/Garcia 1UP (9)

Garcia stalking his ball on the ninth and that's a fine par save from the Spaniard. Walker has a 10-footer to halve the hole... his ball looks a little bit scared, but dives in anyway. Europe remain one up in the penultimate match.

  11. 'Europeans imploding'published at 16:07 British Summer Time 30 September 2016

    5UP D Johnson/Kuchar v Westwood/Pieters (8)

    David Leadbetter
Leading golf coach on BBC Radio 5 live

The preparation certainly wasn’t there and the Americans are playing solid golf, but the Europeans are imploding. They are five down but don’t look like they are going to fire at all.

It's tough. At this stage of the game they need to be going for it, but it's not happening at the moment.

  12. 'Not where you want to be'published at 16:05 British Summer Time 30 September 2016

    5UP D Johnson/Kuchar v Westwood/Pieters (8)

    Carin Koch
Last year's European Solheim Cup captain on BBC Radio 5 live

It's not where you want to be on the first day of a Ryder Cup. Neither one of the Europeans have played well and they need something to happen, but it keeps being the Americans. They need something now.

It's so tough, you want it so much and this format is the toughest format to get it going. You can only hit every other shot, but you want to get in there and put it right.

    5UP D Johnson/Kuchar v Westwood/Pieters (8)

Kuchar on the eighth tee and he's bang on the money, Westwood and Pieters taking some serious flak out there. Dustin to win the hole from about eight feet out and in it goes - the Americans five up in the bottom game, rookie Pieters getting drowned at his own baptism. The Americans haven't exactly played out their skin, they've only made two birdies.

    1UP Mickelson/Fowler v McIlroy/Sullivan

There's a disgust to Rory McIlroy's body language as he turns his back on his putt on 10. The 12 footer was for the hole, to level at all square. It's a little right of the cup though and off the four trot to 11.

The European pairing need to find another gear.

  15. Hazeltine - hole-by-holepublished at 15:59 British Summer Time 30 September 2016

    2UP Reed/Spieth v Stenson/Rose (10)

Next up for Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson a par five. Rose finds the fairway. Patrick Reed holds his stance firmly after contact and that's in the rough.

    Hazeltine hole 11Image source, .

    Hole: 11

    Yards: 606

    Par: 5

A 606-yard monster yet only the third-longest hole on the course. Yikes.

Hit the middle of the fairway off the tee and dare to go for the green in two. Nailing it can yield glory, anything short could find a strategically placed bunker short of the dance floor. Swing big, swing strong and beg for some help from the wind.

Jordan Spieth came up short, but Patrick Reed is the star of this pair. Spieth is getting the applause, but Reed is the player!

    United States v Europe

No place for Danny Willett in today's morning foursomes, but no rest either. He's out on the practice green, preparing for the afternoon fourballs. Europe captain Darren Clarke has said the Masters champion will play on Friday.

  19. Postpublished at 15:57 British Summer Time 30 September 2016

    2UP Reed/Spieth v Rose/Stenson (10)

Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose feel a momentum change, they are in the cup as Patrick Reed stands over a 10 footer. He has to make it or the lead is reduced to one hole.

Reed caresses the ball home, walking after it with his fist clenched. Rose's face is that of a man swearing inside. He's definitely thinking of naughty words. The lead stays at two.

  20. Postpublished at 15:53 British Summer Time 30 September 2016

    4UP D Johnson/Kuchar v Westwood/Pieters (7)

Pieters with a longun for bogey at seven, Europe have made a total hash of this hole. Kuchar not even asked to putt, Europe taking a pummeling in the bottom match.
