    D Johnson/Kuchar v Westwood/Pieters

Trouble for Europe on the first hole in the bottom match. We said Thomas Pieters looked nervous and his first stroke in Ryder Cup gold is right of the green, in some longer stuff. The US are on the green.

    2UP - Spieth/Reed v Rose/Stenson

The bend in the knees and look to the sky from Justin Rose screams desperation. Both he and Henrik Stenson had to press it home there. The Swede's tee shot gave Rose a good birdie chance but it's pulled and America escape with a half. Four holes down, Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth have done some damage.

If this third match sees any more sand, they will need a bucket and spade. Zach Johnson completely over the top of the ball from a decent spot on the second fairway, finding the bunker at the back of the green. Martin Kaymer is on the green for Europe.

  5. What a shot!published at 14:26 British Summer Time 30 September 2016

    2UP - Reed/Spieth v Rose/Stenson

The first par three of the week, man I love a par three. Henrik Stenson reminds me of a robot. He's got that strong, upright look and his swing is rock-like. It's not overly graceful and when he glares at his ball, his face always looks filled with fear.

No need here though, he's found the green - some eight feet from the flag on the fourth. The US ball is only on the fringe, miles away.

A big moment, Europe need to pull one back here.

Europe captain Darren Clarke speaking on Sky Sports about his tactics: "We have put together what we think are the strongest pairings to go out this morning. Some of Paul's combinations last time were a factor in what we decided."

On deciding where to be: "I've taken advice. I'm watching everything and listening to everything."

    D Johnson/Kuchar v Westwood/Pieters

Hmmmm. Those bunkers really are in play on the first. Westwood has gone right into sand, with Dustin Johnson then absolutely battering the ball straight down the fairway. Mah-hoo-sive. Kuchar can blow that one on to the green.

    USA v Europe

    Ryder Cup

So who should win this? Team USA historically dominated but the last couple of decades have been owned by Europe.

Last time out, Europe claimed seven points in the foursomes discipline to USA's one. It proved decisive and USA will not make the same mistake again surely?

Fourth and final, last but not least. Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar against European rock Lee Westwood and a very nervous-looking rookie in Thomas Pieters. Westwood, more mature than an aged whiskey, on the tee...

Sounds like a wonderful morning Andy.

Iain McGregor: Come on Europe and the boys. Stuff 'em in their own back yard!

Not happening just yet Iain. Long way to go.

I tell you what, we're all over the show in the third match. Zach Johnson's chip from the bunker was in a different post code to the pin, Jimmy Walker sends the ball a decent way past. Garcia rolls a par putt into gimme range, before Johnson tidies up to halve it in fives. Scrappy.

    2UP - Spieth/Reed v Rose/Stenson

Jordan Spieth is leading the party for the USA right now. He is that character armed with cocktail sausages and paper hats. From five feet he twitches a little before running the putter head through the ball and in she goes. Back-to-back birdies for the American pair of Spieth and Patrick Reed.

Europe pay the price for a slightly loose Henrik Stenson iron and a Justin Rose pitch which left too much to do. The US just look tidier in this foursome.

    A/S - Mickelson/Fowler v McIlroy/Sullivan

Europe need someone to get the party started a little. Who is going to burst through the door with a bottle and pizza in hand and just get this thing going?

It's not Rory McIlroy yet. His putt on the second green is of nice weight but wide. It leaves Phil Mickelson with a putt for the hole. Lefty waggles into his stance, he's had a long chat with his caddie. Clean strike, the galleries like it, but wide. Halved.

    Z Johnson/Walker A/S Kaymer/Garcia

Kaymer actually found a bunker on the right, leaving Sergio building sandcastles. I'm sure it's not malicious, but the Spaniard has done the same with his approach. Sand on the left, below the pin. Tough up-and-down from there. Ooofff, poor from Jimmy Walker with the green at his mercy. "Swinging too hard," he says. In the back bunker.

    A/S - Fowler/Mickelson v Sullivan/McIlroy

We will have a birdie shootout on two as Andy Sullivan follows Rickie Fowler into the green from the fairway. Both wedges are short and leave uphill putts of similar distance. That's what these guys work on, leaving the uphill putts so they can give them plenty of mustard with no fear of their ball running away down slope.

    1UP - Spieth/Reed v Rose/Stenson

Henrik Stenson is put in the fairway from Justin Rose's drive on three. This pair are one down remember. Stenson will lay this up on what is a par five but he gets it a little wrong and bumps the ball close to a tree. Will that hamper the pitch Rose faces?

Jordan Spieth stands dead still over the ball. A picture of focus. He draws the club back and also goes left, he's put enough timber behind it to take the tree out of the equation though. Advantage USA.
