    Age: 43 World rank: 54

    Major wins: 0

The man who took the world number one spot from Tiger Woods in 2010 has knocked on the door more times than lifelong milkman. He has finished tied third or better on nine occasions in majors. He was second here last year and almost took advantage of Jordan Spieth's now infamous charity. Not the start he dreamed of though, bogey on one.

He is alongside Sergio Garcia who starts with a solid par.

  2. Player tips McIlroy for Green Jacketpublished at 18:48 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    McIlroy (18:41 BST)

Feels like we have been talking about the 'Rory Slam' for, well, forever. Is this the year?

Three-time Masters champion Gary Player reckons it will be. And who are we to argue with the great man...

    McIlroy, Rahm, Tanihara (tee-time: 18:41)

Time for the man chasing a career Grand Slam. And remarkably he has flown under the radar a little bit this week.

    It's Rory time...

    Oosthuizen (+5 after 15)

Don't worry it is not snowing at Augusta. But Louis Oosthuizen has managed to build a snowman. The 2010 Open champion scrawls a blob on his card after triple-bogeying the par-five 15th.

Ouch. You can't win the Masters on the first day, but you sure can lose it...

    Sullivan, Rose, Fitzpatrick (-2)

Heard the one about the Englishman, the Englishman and the Englishman? They all turned up to Augusta and grabbed an early share of the lead.

Moments after Justin Rose joins Andy Sullivan at the top of the leaderboard, another Englishman joins them. Like London buses.

Matt Fitzpatrick makes a dash for the lead, sinking three birdies on the bounce around the turn.

    Rose (-2 after 9)

Bloomin' heck, where's Justin Rose come from? Birdie town, that's where.

The Englishman is always sniffing around the top 10 at Augusta, but is yet to be measured up for a Green Jacket.

Birdies at eight and nine lift him into a five-way share of the lead.

    Willett (+2 after 4)

Danny Willett give himself another outside birdie chance at four, catching the edge of the green on the 240-yard par-three.

Bit of a way to go to the pin though, and that skittles past to leave the defending Masters champion a tricky seven-footer down a slight slope for par.

No problem. Nailed it. The Willett ship is back on course, sort of.

  10. Johnson nightmarespublished at 18:30 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Z Johnson (+6 after 14)

While we wait on the immediate decisions of Dustin Johnson, a certain Zach Johnson is having a day to forget out there. The 2015 Open champion is six over.

So, while we're on nightmares, let's throwback to last year when Zach was stood over a putt at a PGA Tour event and a passing boat decided to scare him senseless. Stick with it. He leaps like a scared salmon.

It's suddenly busier at the top than feeding time at the zoo.

  15. Sullivan takes share of the leadpublished at 18:24 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Fanfare please...

An Englishman leads the Masters! Or should I say co-leads.

Andy Sullivan jumps to the front of the queue when Thomas Pieters has his Jordan Spieth moment on the 12th, the Belgian seeing Rae's Creek gobble up his tee-shot like a hungry 'gator.

He drops in front of the water, two putts and walks off with a double bogey.

That's three shots dropped in two holes and a four-shot lead drowned.

  16. Willett birdies thirdpublished at 18:23 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Willett (+2 after 3)

Hurrah. A fairway for Danny Willett at the third attempt.

The Englishman makes the green in two and is left with a 13-foot birdie putt... which he sinks!

    That's more like it.

Willett's gone out today with American Matt Kuchar, who is three over, and Australian amateur Curtis Luck, who is leading this particular pack after dropping just one shot so far.
