With Dustin Johnson out of the picture, Rory McIlroy has dropped to second favourite with the bookies. Can he make a flying start?

Johnson took until the very last second to make what must have been an agonising decision to pull out.  He was standing on the first tee before making the toughest call of his career.  It is a severe blow for the player who has dominated golf this season.  He arrived here off the back of three big victories and was a justifiable favourite.  All that has been lost through his freak fall at his rental home and the damage done to his back.

If anyone fancies a bet on Dustin Johnson next year, put it on him renting a bungalow at Augusta.

  4. Johnson out of the Masterspublished at 19:15 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

A glum-looking Dustin Johnson trudging off the course without hitting a ball is not the sight anyone wants to see. Not even any of his peers.

This is only the second time the world number one has not played at Augusta - after Tiger back in 2014.

  5. Johnson out of the Masterspublished at 19:12 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

The final group will be a two-ball. Dustin Johnson's name has been taken out of the scorecards which are carried around behind the players.

Jimmy Walker and Bubba Watson are going out on their own.

  6. 'The right decision'published at 19:10 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

If  he can't win or compete and play at the highest level - there is no point in him teeing off. I think he made the right decision.

  7. Johnson out of the Masterspublished at 19:10 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

Dustin Johnson has just walked off the first tee.

He arrived on the tee, stood there with his playing partners and at the last second he took what must be an agonising decision and the world number one, the favourite, realised he couldn't do it. He is out of the Masters.

Butch Harmon, Dustin Johnson's coach, on Sky Sports: "He has pain in his left side, he started to warm up, but his eight irons were going only 100 yards.

"He had to make a swing through the ball, then he felt it and went off for some more physio.

"He said 'I have to make some full swings'. The driver was the key, if he could make full swings with the driver then felt he felt he could get round. But he said the practice swings hurt more that then real thing.

"He said 'I'll have to give it a try and if it doesn't happen then I'll come off."

There is still time for another plot twist in this gripping drama.

Dustin Johnson is stood on the first tee, swinging away at a few looseners. He's grimacing.

This does not look good. At all.

    Fitzpatrick (-1 after 11)

Five become four. Not quite as seismic as when Geri Halliwell left the Spice Girls, but big news nevertheless.

England's Matt Fitzpatrick was a Wannabe, now he's dropped out of the group on -2.

He bogeys the 11th after three birdies on the bounce, leaving compatriots Andy Sullivan and Justin Rose in a share of the lead with Kevin Chappell and Thomas Pieters.

  13. Spieth to the 12th - scream!published at 19:00 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Spieth (level after 11)

    The scream

A little gander at the toughest holes so far shows the first is playing the hardest on day one.

Next toughest is the 12th and then the 11th, the pair of course form part of Amen Corner.

Belgium's Thomas Pieters was of course going along nicely until bogey on 11 was followed by double on 12. A number of players have gone fishing here already today.

And, unforgettably, this is where Jordan Spieth completely fumbled it last year. We wait.

    Spieth (E after 10)

    In case you have forgotten...

Spieth led by five shots as he approached the 10th at Augusta on the Sunday, only to dramatically drop six shots in three holes and allow England's Danny Willett to take advantage.

"No matter what happens at this year's Masters, whether I can grab the jacket back or I miss the cut or I finish 30th, it will be nice having this Masters go by," he said.

No concerns at the 11th for the American. He's got a par. Now for his first return to the 12th....

This DJ saga is more dramatic than an entire series of Peaky Blinders.

    It's a see-saw. Will he? Won't he?

If he goes out there and shoots something boring like even par we'll be properly annoyed. Make it count DJ, make it count!
