Many in the golfing world have taken time out this week to share their tributes to Arnie.

Augusta National chairman Billy Payne was among them, calling the honorary starters' ceremony "an emotional goodbye, but at the same time an even more powerful thank you to the man we dearly love".

"For the first time in over 60 years our sport is without its pre-eminent hero, a man whose greatness as player and a champion was exceeded only by his qualities as a man," he added.

"Arnold Palmer let us all into his life, not from the distance that is typically maintained between a superstar and a fan, but close up so that we could literally push him to greatness and regale in his accomplishments as though they were our own."

All of the patrons at Augusta were given this badge for the opening ceremony today to honour the late Arnold Palmer.

Gary Player recalled the first time he met Arnie: "He had arms like a steel smith and hands so big the club looked like a toothpick in his hands. I thought 'wow, this guy is going to become a champion'."

Jack Nicklaus, now 77, added: "Arnold took me under his wing when I was 20, 22 when I first started on the tour.

"He was very kind to a young guy starting out. I appreciated it very much. We had a lot of great times together."

And there goes Jack Nicklaus. Classy as ever.

"Woah, well done," shouts someone in the crowd, before Gary Player embraces his old friend with a hug, a wink and tells him, "a tie!".

    First up, Gary Player.

Dressed all in black, he turns to Arnie's chair before looking back towards the tee, a quick practice swing and then sends one down the fairway.

Applause all round, but we didn't expect anything else.

In fact, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player are done warming up and there's a lovely moment as Arnold Palmer's Green Jacket is placed on a chair besides the first tee.

After a moment's applause, the crowd falls silent to listen to tales of Arnie approaching the tee box.

Of course, before we look forward to this year's event, we have to remember the legendary Arnold Palmer, the four-time Masters champion who passed away in September.

Palmer had acted as honorary starter at Augusta since 2007, and was more recently joined by Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player.

Nicklaus and Player will continue the tradition of each hitting the first tee-shot before retiring the clubhouse, where they'll no doubt share a drink and fond memories of a man who was loved throughout the golfing world.
