This was a day not to play yourself out of the Masters. 

Today, you couldn't win the tournament but you could lose it.

All of the players that have battled to around par have kept themselves in it.

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy, speaking to Sky Sports after a level-par 72: "I'm really pleased. After nine holes if someone had said I would shoot even par I would have ripped their hand off.

"I had some good up and downs at 10, 11, 12 and then I had the chance on some scoreable holes.

"I'm pleased with my day's work, l didn't have my best stuff but even par is a good score.

"I hit some suspect chips on the front nine but the more greens I missed the more I got into it. My chips on 11 and 12 were really good shots and give me confidence going into the next few days. 

"I hope I can go and make some more birdies."

At the end of the day, when looking at the scoring average, you have to remembers these are the elite players in the world, his score, relative to today's scoring average will make this one of the great major championship rounds throughout history.

That's 93 men in the clubhouse. It was supposed to be 94 of course but this dude pulled out.

Bubba Watson sports a visor today. He rests his blue sunglasses over the top of them for this putt. The shade is engulfing this course now. Here comes the putt... not going to drop. Bogey and a two-over round.

Jimmy Walker takes three practice strokes and then rolls home for a four-over 76. A major winner of course. Not again at this rate.

Iain Carter tells us on 5 live sports extra that Bubba Watson's weight loss is down to him giving up sugar. Iain also wonders if this has made the two-time Masters champion a little more tetchy.

As he finds sand next to the 18th green, he looks angrier than that red devil emoji you have on your smart phone. You know the one.

Bubba marches up the fairway, he's going to stamp all the way it seems. He scoops the ball out and leaves 10ft or so for par. Nasty.

Our final group are on the 18th - just the two of them thanks to Dustin Johnson's withdrawal. Bubba Watson wields his pink driver. It's gripped by his pink glove and it pounds his pink ball. Now there's a sentence you don't get to write too often. 

He finds the fairway. Up on the green, my pick for the week Justin Thomas does me proud, nailing a solid par putt to end one over. Thomas is 23 but all that hat wearing has done little for his hair follicles. Marc Leishman gets up and down well to end one over too. 

Solid stuff gents, solid stuff.

Note to self; when it is windy, do not pitch up beside a bunker.

I think these guys know that for next time as sand from a bunker on the 18th green blows into the faces of patrons (spectators/fans).

Three putts - naughty boy John Rahm. Much fancied this week, he ends one over. He grips his club like a baseball bat and threatens to swing hard, that's how angry he is!

Rory McIlroy will have a few feet left to end level. The sun is beating down, not that's it's roasting at Augusta... no mistake. McIlroy was three over after nine, he clawed it back.

We had a little game of weight watchers earlier and I think we have our star turn. Bubba Watson - he's lost some timber has he not?

His pink ball moves close on the 17th and he should make par. So should Rory McIlroy on 18 after a super chip from below the putting surface.

Rory McIlroy from the left rough on this 18th. A tense look on his face as he fires... he knows it's not great and indeed it's a pull left. He will have a tricky up and down.

John Rahm finds the dancefloor but it's not threatening the pin.

Clubhouse leader Charley Hoffman speaks to BBC Sport: "Anytime you're leading the Masters is an unbelievable feat. It was good feeling going up that 18th hole.

"I watched the leaderboard all day, I look up there to see what others are doing and where they are making their birdies.

"It's supposed to be windy again tomorrow and out here you just then hit fairways and greens, hopefully hit your putts and keep that lead."

Lee Westwood used all his Augusta experience to finish round one in third place. He told Sky Sports: "I didn't putt very well on the front nine. I missed a few short ones. But I didn't really play much different on the back nine, just made putts. 

"It was a case of being patient and not getting frustrated at being three over after nine.

"I didn't get too aggressive, or too far ahead of myself and stuck to the gameplan."

Rory McIlroy had the opportunity to be five or six over par, but he has fought and grounded it out. 

He holed the putts that had to be holed before he made his first birdie at 13. He has shown me a lot the way he has played today.
