No wonder Lefty is grinning! The old boy is top of the pops. Well, alongside Thomas Pieters.

Phil Mick sticks his tee-shot on the dancefloor on 4, canning an 11-foot putt for the birdie and a share of the lead.

    Scott (E after 8), Sullivan (-1)

Andy Sullivan's playing partner Adam Scott eyes up a 20-foot birdie putt...it's got length...what about line? Oooh, it's close but it's not right.

Back over to the Englishman...this to move him one off the lead. He's pushed it! The world number 58 grimaces like he has just dropped a spade on his foot while out gardening.

Ken Brown's wise words will be ringing in his ears.

  3. 'All the greens will be tricky'published at 16:50 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Ken Brown
    BBC Sport commentator at Augusta

Every green will be tricky today, I do not suppose they will be at maximum speed because of the wind. It could be 25, 30, 40mph today.

Anywhere on the green will be tricky, number 10 is not easy and the 12 little par 3 as well. Club selection will be crucial.

Anyone who breaks 70 today will be doing well, anything under par would be good.

    Sullivan (-1)

Andy Sullivan sounds like a scriptwriter on Only Fools and Horses. He's no Del Boy-style chancer though. The Englishman sticks his approach on eight to about six foot. That's for a second birdie on the bounce...

    Scott (E), Sullivan (-1)

Not sure what Adam Scott's fashion inspiration is today. He has turned up looking like a salmon fillet. After it has been stuck in the oven for 20 minutes.

The 2013 champion is even steven through seven, while playing partner Andy Sullivan is one better off.

Sully is one of 11 Englishmen in the field - a record number. Lads, lads, lads.

Not quite time yet, Danny. You eager beaver. There's another hour until the Englishman starts his defence.

Enough time to crack a few balls on the range and nail a bacon buttie. With a smattering of Hendo's Relish.

What a day for the defending champion...

  11. Lefty left waiting for winpublished at 16:32 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Mickelson (-2 after 2)

    MickelsonImage source, .

    Age: 46 World rank: 18

Major wins: Five (three Masters, Open, US PGA)

Three wins at the Masters, he's studied those breaks in the green and could recite the distances around this place in his sleep.

But Phil Mickelson is yet to set the world alight this season. He's played some nine PGA Tour events and hit the top-10 on three occasions.

According to Forbes, Lefty earned more money than any other golfer last year.

Here's another Golden Bear-related stat which provides hope to Phil Mickelson.

Jack Nicklaus had not won a major for SIX years before his Augusta success in 1986.

Lefty's drought is half as long...

  14. Eaglepublished at 16:29 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Mickelson (-2 after 2)

Another eagle on the second! And it goes on the card of Phil Mickelson. Old Lefty drains a 41-foot putt to the delight of the Augusta patrons.

Mickelson is 46 now. Jack Nicklaus was 46 when he won his final Masters. Just saying.

    Kaymer (-1 after 2)

But those cheers don't climb the decibel-meter as much as the one for playing partner Martin Kaymer...

The German whacks his second shot on the 575-yard par five just short of the green, knocking in for a eagle to wipe out that earlier bogey.

    Spieth (-1 after 2)

Jordan Spieth spends more time in the red than an unsuccessful businessman. And the American is already beating the beast that is Augusta.

The world number six birdies the monster par-5 second, bringing huge roars from the galleries behind the green.

    Pieters (-3 after 5)

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a new leader! Belgium's Thomas Pieters has already sunk three birdies - he's only been out on the course for an hour.

Apparently his formative years were spent diving into the pond at his local club to retrieve balls and flog them for some extra pocket money. Although I did read that on April Fool's Day.

We might see him jumping in the drink like Happy Gilmore's caddy later on. At the moment we're seeing him knocking in the birdies.

Pat Rouleau:  I fell off the back of a golf cart going very slow, hit my head on the fairway and had concussion-like symptoms.

RB: A stressful time at work followed by a stag do with girlfriend's male friends from home. Far too drunk and fell down a flight of stone stairs and broke three ribs. I was going to California for a trip two weeks later to play Pebble/Spyglass and stay at the hotel. Could barely swing and still went and played. Most expensive holiday ever ruined.. Told my missus I didn't want to go on that stag do!

Jerry Bingham: My back went into spasm at Stansted on the way to the Scottish Open pro-am at Castle Stuart last year - the biggest day of my golfing life! Thought I would have to pull out but painkillers and adrenaline just about saw me through.
