    Mickelson (level after 18)

Phil Mickelson digs out of the trees on 18 and leaves himself a chip. He uses the contours of the green wonderfully and the ball begins to trickle down the slope, coming to rest next to the pin. A big save - par.

  2. In the hunt (again)published at 00:18 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

  3. Mickelson is leaking fuelpublished at 00:18 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    Shaun Micheel
2003 US PGA Championship winner, BBC Radio 5 live

Phil Mickelson is limping in, he is leaking oil.

  4. Birdiepublished at 00:14 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

Spieth (level after 18) Kaymer (+2)

What about it? Jordan Spieth hauling himself to level par with a birdie putt on 18. Ominous.

Martin Kaymer holes too for par... leaving him at two over.

As Spieth leaves the green he high fives one or two fans. Those at the top of the leaderboard will glimpse at his name and shudder.

  5. Mickelson on 18th tee...published at 00:10 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    Mickelson (level after 17)

    Iain Carter
BBC Radio 5 live sports extra at Augusta

Mickelson has carved that into the trees. We could see a big branch land but not his ball. That could be big trouble and he is unraveling at the moment.

You can listen to Iain by clicking 'live coverage' at the top of this page.

  6. Couples contentpublished at 00:09 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    Couples (-1 after 18)

Fred Couples was Masters champion in 1992. The 57-year-old always seems to have a decent opening couple of days at Augusta and he's continued that this week. He told Sky Sports: "I feel like I can play the course well but in conditions like this I feel I have a better chance than if it was sunny and less windy.

"It would be hard for me to shoot a 68 like some of the better players. In bad weather I feel I could battle.

"The only real disappointment was my second on 17 which led to a bad bogey."

  7. Cut mark updatepublished at 00:08 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    Iain Carter
BBC Radio 5 live at Augusta

If you are seven over par you are in 54th place so it looks like those will miss out.

There are 53 players at six over par or better and that is within 10 shots of the lead too, so it looks like +6 will be the cut mark.

  8. Spieth's commandpublished at 00:08 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    Spieth (+1 after 17)

"Go... Go..." shouts Jordan Spieth on 18 as he takes a huge divot in the fairway. Very good indeed. He will have 18ft to get back to level par.

  9. Bogeypublished at 00:06 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

Rose (-2 after 16) Mickelson (level after 17)

Justin Rose swings through on 17 - he saved par on 16 after going over the green - and this is ugly. As his driver makes contact, one hand comes off the club. A lash.

Phil Mickelson has a big par putt up on the 17th green. Some 10ft, his shadow is huge in the evening sun. His trousers flutter in the wind... he sends it...missed. Pulled it below the hole. Bogey - back to level. Dropped shots at 14, 15 and 17.

  10. Moore dedicates round to late grandmotherpublished at 00:03 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    Moore -1

American Ryan Moore, who shot a 69 today, told BBC Radio 5 live: My grandma passed away yesterday morning, she's been not doing well for a while but it's hard. She was someone I was very close with, she had a huge impact on my life. It was nice to go out and play a good round of golf to maybe honour her a little bit."

  11. 'Garcia looks relaxed'published at 00:01 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    Garcia -4

    Jay Townsend
BBC Radio 5 live at Augusta

Sergio's body language shows a guy who is more relaxed and comfortable with himself and his position in golf. He does not seem to be upset and edgy and that could push him through to a victory.

  12. 'No major, no problem'published at 00:01 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    Garcia (-4)

Sergio Garcia speaks to BBC Sport: "The course, the way it's playing is very challenging. You have to hit good shots but you have to get lucky. I've been fortunate to get lucky on two or three moments.

"I enjoy when courses play tough and when the Masters play difficult, it means high quality shots will be rewarded and you have to hit it the right way.

"There's no doubt that I do want to get my first major but I do have to say that I try not to make it a problem or an issue. I am out there giving it my best."

  13. Leaderboardpublished at 00:00 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

Selected others: -1 Phil Mickelson (16), +1 Rory McIlroy (F), Jordan Spieth (17)

Jordan Spieth keeps himself in the conversation by making par on 17, he's one over. Martin Kaymer makes par alongside him to stay two above par. Over to Justin Rose on 16 - those sunglasses still don't work for me - over the green but not in too much trouble.

Horrible pin position on 16 today, hard to get close to it.

  15. Tough going? I think not...published at 23:57 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

A lot of talk about how hard it is out there. Not sure about you but I wouldn't mind the chance to give it a go. It really does look like Hell.

  16. In the clubhousepublished at 23:54 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    Fowler (-4)

Nobody wants this outright lead - unless Justin Rose makes a late bolt.

Rickie Fowler - along with the whole crowd behind the 18th green - wills his birdie-putt to drop, but the ball has other ideas.

It races past the right edge, but he knocks in for the par.

Four birdies, an eagle and a bogey seal a five-under-par 67. That leaves him four under in total and a big player in this Masters tale.

  17. Postpublished at 23:50 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    Knox (+9)

There is a ball inside Rickie Fowler's on the 18th green, however. And that ball belongs to Scotland's Russell Knox.

Knox is five over for the day, nine over in total, leaving him well adrift of the cut. A birdie on the last will be a good way to sign off for another year...

  18. Bogey... birdie...published at 23:50 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    Mickelson (-1 after 16) Rose (-2 after 15)

The putter finally loses some heat for Phil Mickelson as he misses a 10ft effort left on 16. A hole back Justin Rose pounces on a par five to reach two under - tap-in birdie.

  19. Postpublished at 23:48 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    Fowler (-4)

Nail this and you've got a shot of being the overnight leader. No pressure Rickie.

Short-iron in his hand, less than 150 yards to go. Whoosh. Fowler's Thunderbirds-like eyebrows dip as his eyes narrow.

Is he worried? He shouldn't be. One bounce, a bit of check, an 11-foot birdie putt for the outright lead.
