Richard Pryde:, external#bbcgolf, external I am a bit worried as I have Fowler and it is rare to lead from start to finish!! I also have Dufner and Day.

I see your logic Richard. Mr Fowler really has set a mark and raised your hopes. I can't see anyone bettering it on day one.

Anyone else backed the winner this week? Tweet #bbcgolf.

  2. Blimp crash updatepublished at 18:56 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

Some of you may be aware of a blimp crashing near Erin Hills. It turns out this was nothing to do with the US Open but yet the USGA have cleared the situation up in a statement.

The pilot is in hospital receiving treatment and was the only person involved.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the pilot at this time," said the USGA.

    Spieth (+1 after 14), Reed (-4 after 15)

You have five minutes. No using the internet...

By the way, Patrick Reed drops one to move back to four under. Jordan Spieth needs this to just drop one on his 14th hole of the day. Perfect weight, drops in the right side. Bogey only.

Jordan Spieth is about to move into ugly numbers as a wayward drive has cost him. His fourth to the par-four fifth - his 14th hole of the day - leaves about 10 feet for bogey.

Lee Westwood looks solid over his ball and he's only missed the green twice from regulation today. Makes no mistake to leave 30ft for birdie on his 17th.

Tommy Fleetwood is having a superb day. That dashing green shirt of his belongs on a man draining 15 footers to save par. That's the stuff Tommy.

Grace is one under after 14.

    Spieth (level after 13)

Jordan Spieth is grinding it out a bit, one birdie today as he stands over a 12 footer for par on his 13th hole of the day. It needs to break left... doesn't. Back to par. That would be a decent score if it wasn't for Rickie Fowler blazing a trail like Road Runner.

Spieth clumps one into the thick stuff on the next. Hang on in there young man...

Thanks Alex. As it's the US Open I'll kick off with some sort of American slang like cowabunga as Rickie Fowler drains another birdie to make it to seven under. That's right, seven under. I thought this course was supposed to have teeth? It's as gummy as a new born baby right now.

We will be going into the wee small hours tonight and I know you're with me all the way. We will have a quiz or two, some predictions and of course, the action.

  9. Course guide: Punishing 18thpublished at 18:27 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    Hole 18: 622-675 par-five

A show-stopping finale studded with more than 20 bunkers, the 18th tees off from a slight elevation and usually benefits from a following wind, meaning that a decent drive on firm ground could be in the region of 400 yards.

That sets up a tantalising risk-reward option of going for the green, where more bunkers and fescue are waiting to punish errant shots.

  10. Postpublished at 18:27 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

Talking of the distance, the 18th at Erin Hills can play up to 675 yards. So let's have a look at it...

  11. Playing the long game...published at 18:25 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

The US Open is billed as the toughest test in golf, but this year's edition is also the longest walk.

On top of the 7,845-yard course - the longest in major history - I've heard the stroll between the tee boxes adds almost another mile.

And it seems we could be set for some lengthy rounds.

  12. Hoffman takes early clubhouse leadpublished at 18:20 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    Hoffman -2 (F)

Charley Hoffman is the current clubhouse leader, he's home in two under.

The American made four birdies in his opening round, but a couple of bogeys pegged him back.

He's one of 24 players currently under par.

  13. Fowler on for opening-day record?published at 18:16 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    Fowler -6 (15*)

Just to put Rickie Fowler's round in perspective so far, he's one shot off matching a record US Open opening score.

They're playing a 72-par at Erin Hills today.

    Not bad, Rickie...

Rickie Fowler and Tommy Fleetwood both went on a surge as they hit the turn, clocking up three successive birdies each.

Their scores have settled since, and it's the American who still holds the lead by one shot.

Fowler has successfully negotiated the last three holes in par, with four to play.

Fleetwood is just three from home as he looks to open his US Open campaign with a flawless round.

Some of you may have noticed Dustin Johnson on his home-made range today. It's not really done him much good as he's three over on his 12th hole of the day. That darn fescue has done him a couple of times.

  18. Disastrous start for Willettpublished at 18:01 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    Willett +7 (12*)

Danny Willett's opening-day scorecard is one to make you wince.

The 2015 Masters champion is currently propping up the pack at seven over par through 12.

The Englishman carded five bogeys on the opening nine and then dropped two shots at the par-four second.

You might have noticed Englishman Eddie Pepperell's name on that list.

He emerged from a torrid spell, in which he was forced to return to Tour School to retain his European Tour card, to make the US Open via the Walton Heath qualifier.

"The last year has been a bit of a struggle and I lost a lot of confidence," Pepperell told BBC Sport's Iain Carter.

"Qualifying for the US Open, having my dad and family there and seeing them smiling, knowing they'll come over to America and have a great time, it was really nice. We are going to enjoy it."
