Adam Scott's day isn't getting better, he's run into a few fescue issues. The Australian's caddie comes wandering over in shorts, I wouldn't fancy bear legs in that long grass though.

Bubba Watson has a good lie, but he can't reach the green either as the Erin Hills wind wraps itself around his ball and drags it short.

How can Sergio Garcia respond? He clips an approach high into the Wisconsin sky and it drops a couple of yards from the flag. Beautiful. Sergio on the charge?

McIlroy (level after 1), Day (-1), Rose (level)

    Steady on, steady on!

Rory McIlroy, Jason Day and Justin Rose are teeing off on the second - a par four - and they all two of them reach the green while the group up ahead are still putting. Either the USGA need to hand helmets out to those on the green or someone needs to hold the guys on the tee back.

Rose is in the bunker, McIlroy is in a nice place short of the green and will surely two putt for birdie. Rose's bunker shot is good, birdie chance.

    Lowry (-1 after 2) Leishman (-1 after 4) Thomas (-2 after 2)

Now, Ireland's Shane Lowry told us that his game was shaping up nicely this week and he's out there with a birdie after two holes. A lengthy one and it's well judged. Australian Marc Leishman sweeps home a birdie on his fourth hole - some of you may remember him going close at The Open a few years ago when Zach Johnson won the day.

And what about young American Justin Thomas? He's a player with serious credentials but no great form in majors so far. Two under through two holes is some start.

    Garcia -2, Watson E, Scott +2 (3)

Some colourful outfits on display today, but the most eye-catching thing about Bubba Watson is his ball. Resplendent pink.

The grey and black-clad American takes a three wood to his drive at the 497-yard fourth and it just flirts with the slightly longer grass.

Sergio Garcia would probably wear his Green Jacket if he could. The Masters winner has his eye in off the tee - Sweet. As. You. Like.

Day (-1 after 1), McIlroy (level) Rose (level)

    McIlroy

Rory McIlroy has a look at birdie on the first after a poor drive. His putt has pace but the line is a little left. Jason Day rolls in a birdie from close up. That was a perfectly played opener from the Australian. Solid drive, cautious second, good chip, easy putt.

  8. Bubba saves parpublished at 20:27 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    Garcia -2, Watson E, Scott +2 (3)

Par for Sergio Garcia. He rolls a long putt up to within a whisker of the cup and then just prods in to stay two under.

Bubba Watson needs his 10-footer to drop to save par. I missed his drive, and it appears the American was hacking around in that pesky fescue before finding the fairway.

Can Bubba sink it? You bet. It kicks left right at the last minute and drops beneath the Wisconsin turf.

Steve Stricker tees it up and gets the cheer of the day. He's a local Wisconsin man of course.

Stricker has been around the block in this sport and recorded a dozen wins on the PGA Tour, the first of which came in 1996.

With all that experience he looks at ease and has his wife as caddie today. On the first, Stricker finds the fairway.

Rory and his gang of major winners are on this drag. It's a tester, though we've seen Sergio and Paul Casey pick up eagles.

    Hole oneImage source, Getty Images

    Hole one: 560/608 yards, par-five

A daunting opening hole shaped like a semi-circle, the biggest hitters will aim to reach the green in two.

An undulating fairway however is fraught with risk, and any shot that strays down the left has a good chance of ending in a hazard.

  11. Eaglepublished at 20:23 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    Casey (-2 after 1)

My oh my, Paul Casey struts up to the pin on the first hole and picks his ball up with the swagger of a man in a suit on the dancefloor.

The Englishman clips a chip on this par five and with a bump and a roll, she's a beauty and in the cup. What a shot. Two under through one hole.

  12. Postpublished at 20:22 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    Garcia -2, Watson E, Scott +1 (2)

Sergio Garcia finds the heart of the fairway off the third tee, having followed up that opening eagle with a par at the second.

That's a cracking approach from the Spaniard as well, on the green in two.

What can the big-hitting Bubba Watson do? He's got the distance and the spin, and the American's pink ball fizzes to a halt 10 feet above the pin.

    Sergio is some way right.

  14. Rose eyes second major winpublished at 20:17 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    Rose (20:09 BST)

    RoseImage source, .

Justin Rose has won an Olympic gold medal, but no more major titles since his US Open success in 2013.

Seven wins on the PGA Tour is impressive though and of course, he went so close at the Masters this year, losing a play-off to Sergio Garcia. Earlier this week I saw legend of the game Gary Player pick Justin as his winner as he hoped the Englishman would be rewarded for his sporting behaviour at Augusta.

    Day, McIlroy, Rose on one...

"From England, the 2013 US Open champion, Justin... Rose."

The tee announcer gives it a dramatic build up. Justin takes a deep breath, pink shirt today, then rips one into the first cut.

"From Northern Ireland, the 2011 US Open champion, Rory... McIlroy."

The sport's big face does the same as Justin... rough. Jason Day the only one of the three on the nice grass.

John Rahm was an emotional man out there today. On times it looked like he'd kick anything to vent his anger. Perhaps some will like him for showing his emotions. If he were playing tennis he'd have smashed up his bag of equipment for sure. At four over, he's already gone to the range to work on his game. Rahm is a man fancied thesedays having won his first PGA Tour event this year.

  18. 25/156 = Toughpublished at 20:08 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

So Rory McIlroy is about to tee it up. He's going to have to battle conditions which look tougher than what the early starters faced.

As things stand, we have 25 players under par from a 156-strong field. The more I look at that Rickie Fowler round, the more I'm impressed.

Rory McIlroy insists he is fit and ready to attack at the US Open

Rory McIlroy insist he is "totally fine" as he returns to action after a month out because of injury.

The 28-year-old suffered a recurrence of a rib injury at the Players Championship.

But he says there will be "no limitations" on his swing when he opens up at Erin Hills at 20:09 BST.

"I don't think it's a secret that I feel like my driver is one of the biggest weapons in my bag," he said.

"If I can get that in my hands more regularly, and I think if the field has to hit driver more, that plays into my hands too."

  20. What a start!published at 20:01 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    Garcia (-2 after 1) Scott (+1 after 1)

Sergio Garcia is picking up right where he left off at Augusta. That's some real technology from the Spaniard. He pumps a fairway wood over the flag on the first hole, stunner of a shot to leave a long eagle putt. Guess what? He drained it too. Sergio judges the break and weight with like Simon Cowell judges talent shows.

No such glory for Adam Scott on the same hole. He three putts for bogey having had a mid-range birdie putt. Get it out of your mind sir, a long way to go.
