  2. Clubhouse frustrations?published at 19:57 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    D Johnson (+3), Spieth (+1), Kaymer (level)

Martin Kaymer is in for par on the last drag, a level-par day for the German. This is a big putt for Jordan Spieth to end the day level par. It breaks right to left but the swing is too much and he will be over par for the day. Now Dustin Johnson for a two... no chance. Par only. A grim day.

    D Johnson (+3 after 17) Spieth (+1 after 17)

Beautiful tee shots on the final hole for Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth. Both will have a look at birdie on the par three. Clipped irons from the elevated tee rain in on the green like joyous drops of gold...

    OosthuizenImage source, .

Looking for a man in form? Louis Oosthuizen has made the cut on his last 16 outings, that was only bettered on the US Open start list by Phil Mickelson.

Now Lefty has pulled out, the South African stands alone as a model of consistency.

  6. 'I can't make one man'published at 19:46 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    D Johnson (+3 after 17) Spieth (+1 after 17)

Dustin Johnson sends a long putt on his 17th hole of the day, he needs something. Decent line but that's short and it's par only, leaving him three over.

The body language is that of a frustrated man. Shoulders slumped, his walk is a trudge. Jordan Spieth has a look a birdie... great putt... lips out. Too much pace on that bad boy and it refuses to succumb to gravity. "I can't make one man," says the two-time major winner. He looks really cheesed off.

  8. Can Sergio add to Masters success?published at 19:42 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    Garcia on the first hole...

Sergio Garcia heads into the tournament on the back of his first major win after claiming the Green Jacket at Augusta in April.

The 37-year-old world number seven hopes to draw on his Masters triumph this week.

"Every tournament is tough to win and majors are even tougher," said the Spaniard. "And a US Open, we all know how difficult they are."

In the modern era, only two players have won multiple majors after claiming their first aged 37 or older, with Angel Cabrera winning his first of two at that age and Mark O'Meara winning twice in 1998 aged 41.

"I still feel in good shape and my game feels nice. I'm still working hard on it," added Garcia.

Bubba Watson sends a banana out there. A huge swing on his ball from right to left and it makes the fairway. Goodness me, if he tries that kind of stuff all week his nerves will be battered.

The only one of the three Masters champions in the group to miss the fairway is Sergio Garcia. More from him next...

  10. Runaway leader...published at 19:39 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    FowlerImage source, Getty Images

If you are just tuning in, they are all chasing down this gent.

Rickie 'never won a major' Fowler did the business today. A flawless round. Could this finally be his time? Fowler has won on the PGA Tour four times, so he knows how to get it done when there's a little less pressure.

Three men about to start their rounds who will believe they can take him on. Bubba Watson, Sergio Garcia and Adam Scott...

  11. Par saves...published at 19:36 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    Kaymer (+1 after 15), Spieth (+1 after 15), D Johnson (+3 after 15)

It's pars all around on the seventh hole for Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson and Martin Kaymer. This is of course their 16th hole of the day. Johnson and Spieth have had a result as they both found a few problems on the par five drag.

To the eighth, Spieth sends it out there... long and straight. Kaymer follow... ditto.

Mark Andrews, well done my friend. You have Struck it Lucky, delivered a Blockbuster and showed some Mastermind.

Mr Andrews nailed our teaser, it was indeed Curtis Strange who last defended a US Open title in 1989.

More teasers to come. Keep tweeting us on #bbcgolf.

  13. Na not impressedpublished at 19:29 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    (+1 after 1)

Some of you will have seen Kevin Na's grumble at the thick rough at this course this week.

Many people didn't like his moaning, if you've not seen it, it's worth a watch.

Anyway, all his frustration has led to him making bogey on his first hole. Erin Hills has maybe got in his head and is having a party in there.

American Kevin Na was particularly scathing about the set-up produced by the USGA at Erin Hills.

Speaking of Dustin Johnson, he is of course trying to defend his title.

So who was the last man to defend a US Open. No using the internet?

A clue? Wimbledon won the FA Cup around this time. Answers to #bbcgolf. Anyone using the internet to find the answer will be sent to bed without dinner.

    D Johnson (+3 after 15), Spieth (+1 after 15), Kaymer (+1 after 15)

Martin Kaymer on his 16th hole of the day. The noise his club head makes is incredible. It's like a jet has just taken off. He's laying up on this par five in the hunt for a birdie.

Jordan Spieth is alongside him and he's in the sand. The baby faced assassin is perplexed. He expected his ball to come up way short of the trap. "How far did that go? That must have went 260 into the wind. I thought it was perfect."

Spieth is in an awful position there, as is Dustin Johnson, the third man in this group.

Daniel Johnson:, external#bbcgolf, external I fancy the experience of Lee Westwood will see him go close with more difficult weather ahead tomorrow.

Westy arrows a rock solid iron into his final hole of the day. His mark of three under is very handy indeed. The Englishman has around 15ft left for birdie.

    Christoper Bibby, kudos sir.

This gent answers our teaser, it was indeed Tom Kite who won the US Open in 1992. This was the last time the chosen course played as a par 72, as it does this time.

    Another teaser coming...

  19. Clubhouse mark!published at 19:07 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    Fowler (-7) Koepka (-5)

Rickie Fowler pings his iron into his 18th hole of the day, a par three. Much can go wrong here but it's a cracking line and his ball rests up on the fringe of the green, maybe 15ft to the hole. He rolls one up and makes his par.

It looks like Fowler - who has never won a major of course - gets into the clubhouse two clear of Brooks Koepka, who also ends his round. Koepka is dangerous, he booms it but you can bet your best pair of shoes on him having at least one horrific hole this week as typically his wheels come off somewhere.

  20. Ugly!published at 19:02 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    Willett after 16

    WillettImage source, .

No birdie, seven bogeys, one double. Yuck.

Danny Willett has lost his way, suffered injury and lost his old caddie in recent months. That 2016 Masters win feels a long time ago. I must admit, I like Willett. He's a proper competitor but boy does he need to stop the rot of form and find some answers soon.
