All the fears over Erin Hills being a monster of a course were eased I'd say, we have 44 players under par which is a record for the US Open after one round.

So who can grumble? Well, Rory McIlroy, Jason Day and a few more to be truthful. Day two could well claim some huge names.

The Press Association's golf man points out something notable...

Willett is nine over, tied for 153rd and 17 shots off the lead. Bang in it...

No player missed the fairway more than Rory McIlroy today. He found that magic grass just five times in 14 holes where there was fairway to hit.

It's credit to Justin Rose that his mark is also really low - six fairways - yet he ended level par.

Rickie Fowler is the clubhouse leader. What was his secret in the opening round? Hit the fairways...

"It was still tough, you had to hit the fairway and that was the goal. I was able to drive it pretty well," he said of the conditions at Erin Hills.

"When the wind picked up I was already a few under.

"The game plan is drive it well, get on the fairway as much as possible - you've got the fescue in the rough, you don't want to deal with bunkers too much - hit the fairway and we'll go from there."

Rickie Fowler led from early on and despite several threats to his low opening round, he finishes top going into day two. Here's the top of the US Open leaderboard...

Our man Xander Schauffele cannot catapult his name into US Open history by sharing an opening-day lead. His putt on nine has too much pace and will not break. Still, what a round.

From what I can see, Xander Schauffele has played in 16 events this season and only placed in the top 20 once - a fifth place at the Sanderson Farms Championship in October.

This then, is quite the surprise.

On the par three ninth he takes aim - this his last hole of course - solid stuff and he will get a decent look at sharing the clubhouse lead.

Did anyone back Xander Schauffele?

Go on, claim your glory and tell me you did. He leaves his birdie putt short on 17. A birdie on 18 will tie the clubhouse lead.

The only man who can now impact on the lead is that unknown quantity on the 17th, Mr Xander Schauffele. He has a birdie putt of mid range. The 23-year-old is averaging 1.38 putts a hole, that's fourth in the standings today. So his short stick is hot and the big dog is growling too as he's averaging 320 yards.

Paul Casey is ecstatic about his opening round 66, leaving him tied second at the moment.

"It was worrying the wind would pick up but it stayed benign," he tells Sky Sports. "What perfect conditions. I'm ecstatic. I'm feeling really, really good about this golf course. I like classic US Open courses but this is different. It has an Open Championship feel about it. People were clapping out there. Maybe that changes the feel of it and maybe that is something I've lacked in US Opens. Saying that, I'm playing good golf."

Matt Fitzpatrick rolls home a birdie on the last to make it to two under and Shane Lowry compliments a corking arrow into the par-three ninth to tiddle home a short one and reach the one under. Enjoy a night's rest gents.

Justin Rose has battled like a Game of Thrones character all day long (and I mean battled). He's saved par, up and downs here and there, fine work from the rough, you name it. Now, on 18, he takes three putts from 14ft or so.

He's caught the dire form of those around him, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day. Three men who have work to do tomorrow morning but two of them need some real magic.

Xander Schauffele - that young American who has many commentators trying to bend their tongue around his name - fires an iron into the pin and the spin brings grip aplenty. In goes his birdie. Tied second in the US Open - his first major.

The 18th brings us three men we thought would be contending, perhaps just one will be. Justin Rose is that man, at one under he has hope. His third shot into this par five is good, leaving 12ft up hill for birdie. Jason Day is in a similar position but looks done for. Rory McIlroy also makes the dancefloor in two but leaves a little further.

Meanwhile, back on 16, we have another man on six under...

Rory McIlroy has certainly struggled today and evidently needs more time on the course, could more events in the calendar help him improve?

"Is it time for him to add some events to get ready? You have to ask that question because playing two rounds, occasionally isn't going to help him get better. If he misses the cut tomorrow, which is highly likely, you have to start thinking 'OK, I need to get some alternate rounds under my belt'. The French Open would be a great event at a Ryder Cup venue, It's great golf course, a finely prepared golf course."

To the last hole, a par five. Paul Casey has played it well and has just a few feet left for birdie. This could move him to six under and into second place on his own. Things go still as he stands over it... the galleries hushed. In it rolls. Well done Paul Casey, a great round from start to finish.
