    Steele (-9 after 15) Fleetwood (-9 after 11)

Tommy Fleetwood is looking to get to 10 under and has around 12ft to navigate. It will break a bit and does... too much for him. Par it is on this 11th.

We have a new face in the mix though in Brendan Steele. The American pings one on the 15th off the tee which makes the green, rolls back off a ridge and leaves about one foot for birdie. What a shot and he's now in the mix.

Simon, we like it but it's not quite as strong as the Marc Leishman example we have seen. Maybe stick a hat on your pal for us to bridge the gap?

    Kim (-7 after 11)

A barrage of birdies out there. Si Woo Kim grabs the latest at the 11th to move to seven under.

  6. Birdiepublished at 22:35 British Summer Time 17 June 2017

    Steele (-8 after 14)

How many players are going to be in striking distance of the lead at the end of today?

A frankly unfathomable amount for a US Open. It's cracking to watch though.

Brendan Steele is the latest to put himself right up there with a superb birdie putt on 14 after a run of four straight pars.

  7. Bogey and birdiepublished at 22:34 British Summer Time 17 June 2017

    Hoffman (-8 after 15) Harman (-8 after 8)

Charley Hoffman has an awkward stance as he tries to scoop from the rough on 15, just beside this green. He digs it out and will have a knee-knocker from 12ft or so for his par.

Brian Harman has not surrendered yet and he stiff his tee shot on nine to within four feet, big chance. Back to Hoffman... misses it.

  8. Postpublished at 22:33 British Summer Time 17 June 2017

    Fleetwood (-9 after 10), Koepka (-8 after 10)

Again, steady stuff from the pairing of Fleetwood and Koepka. Others have come unstuck on 10 but they both kick off their back nine with solid pars.

Eddie Pepperell - who is four under - is with the BBC Radio 5 live team and says: "I said 10 under when we got here would win it. I still think it may be as if the wind blows tomorrow, I think the scoring will come back."

  10. Is Thomas' second shot on 18 a cause for concern?published at 22:32 British Summer Time 17 June 2017

The golf ball is travelling way too far. This should be a watershed moment for the game of golf. We don't need golf courses this length. We shouldn't have golf courses this length.

I'm enjoying watching this US Open and there are a lot of things I like about this golf course. I like the ethos of taking it to new places, but they shouldn't have to be as big as this.

  11. 'Unbelievable'published at 22:30 British Summer Time 17 June 2017

    Thomas (-11)

It's an amazing round. He capped it with an unbelievable eagle three. Shake your head. Can you imagine getting it that close? He's 11 under par. That will be a pretty good number at the end of the day.

    Thomas (-11)

Eight foot, one inch putt. Here it goes...

Oh you beauty. Justin Thomas nails it to card a round of 63 - a course record.

It's also a joint-record lowest round in US Open history but is crucially the lowest-ever round in relation to par.

Nine under on the day and 11 under for the tournament. The American leads by two.

  13. Postpublished at 22:26 British Summer Time 17 June 2017

For reference, Justin Thomas' playing partner Jonathan Randolph didn't even get inside Thomas' effort with his third shot.

In fact Randolph made a right pig's ear of the hole and has ended up with a double bogey.

Finally, Thomas approaches his eagle chance...

    Fleetwood (-9 after 9), Koepka (-8 after 9)

Koepka with his second shot on 10, it's on line but perhaps he's a club short there. Not too bad though.

Fleetwood steps and goes inside Koepka's effort. Excellent stuff.

  15. What a shot!published at 22:24 British Summer Time 17 June 2017

    Casey (-4 after 7)

Paul Casey is stood in the rough on eight. This guy's day has been horrible so far. He swipes and his shoulder look almost accepting of a tough day but this is some shot indeed. It rolls three inches to the right of the hole and runs past but a slope brings the ball back to within a few feet. An unlikely birdie perhaps?

  16. Game gonepublished at 22:20 British Summer Time 17 June 2017

    Thomas (-9 after 17)

    Iain Carter
BBC golf correspondent at Erin Hills

Thomas hit two three woods to cover 667 yards. The game is gone.

  17. Golf from the godspublished at 22:20 British Summer Time 17 June 2017

    Thomas (-9 after 17)

"Oh gosh Jimmy, be good," pleads Justin Thomas at his caddie on 18.

It's not good. It's not even just great. It's utterly sublime. It's one of the greatest golf shots I've ever seen.

A 667-yard hole and he's reached the green in two to set up an eagle chance.

If he nails it, he'll finish with a round of 63, which will be nine under in relation to par and thus the lowest round ever shot in relation to par in US Open history.

    Stunning.

  18. Birdiepublished at 22:18 British Summer Time 17 June 2017

    Hoffman (-9 after 14)

With a seven footer for birdie on 14 Charley Hoffman rejoins the lead. He waves his right hand to thank those applauding. The leaderboard is now absolutely stacked with Americans. Tommy Fleetwood pretty much makes up the entire 'Rest of the World' team right now.

    Fleetwood (-9 after 9), Koepka (-8 after 9)

Fleetwood elects for the putter from the edge of the green - missing left all the way but he does well enough to knock in a par.

Very assured front nine from the Englishman.

Koepka to reach nine under too? No, he slides his birdie chance right.

    Fleetwood (-9 after 8). Koepka (-8 after 8)

Ah, error from Fleetwood at the ninth, missing the green to the left. Tricky chip/putt to come.

Koepka makes no mistake, finding the centre of the green.
