    Hoffman (-7 after 8)

All the damage was done in those two woeful chip shots but Hoffman compounds the error by three-putting on the green, looking shorn of all confidence.

He did so well in getting to 10 under but in the course of one hole he now seems very far away.

    Fleetwood (-11 after 5)

Absolutely tremendous effort from Fleetwood but that par putt did indeed prove beyond him. He's close enough that it should be a bogey, unlike Charley Hoffman, who's in even deeper trouble on eight...

    Hoffman (-10 after 7)

The Hoff has gone off the deep end here. He shanks one chip and then completely under-hits the next to barely get on the green at the eighth.

He's already taken four shots on this par four and will do well to drop just one here.

  5. Bogey for JT!published at 22:04 British Summer Time 18 June 2017

    Thomas (-8 after 5) Harman (-13 after 5)

There are some scrappy rounds out there now. Kim Si-Woo is in the rough on seven, Justin Thomas in the same shape on five.

He stands there with his feet engulfed by grass, his knees tickled by the long stuff. There will be nothing tickly about this whack through the ball. CHUNK! Out it comes but it's short of the green on this par four. Here comes the chip... close but runs past. One to make him tremble yet to come to save par and perhaps save any hope here. He sends his putt and it bends wide. This is poor stuff from Saturday's glory man, three dropped in four holes.

He is watching Brian Harman make a tidy and relatively stress free par at the same time, that will sting.

  6. Postpublished at 22:03 British Summer Time 18 June 2017

    Fleetwood (-11 after 5)

Oh dearie me, no, not that. Fleetwood puts too much on his chip back at the hole and it rolls back down the slope over the other edge. A very, very tough par from here. A bogey would be a decent result.

  7. Postpublished at 22:02 British Summer Time 18 June 2017

    Fleetwood (-11 after 5), Koepka (-13 after 5)

Cool-hand Koepka finds yet another green on the par three sixth.

Oo-er, Fleetwood's effort is off target...it's rolling...and rolling, very far away from the hole - 41 yards away to be precise.

That may actually help him as he'll be forced to chip now instead of a monstrous putt.

  8. FORE!published at 21:55 British Summer Time 18 June 2017

    Fowler (-10 after 6) Thomas (-9 after 4) Hoffman (-10 after 7)

"Fore right," yells Charley Hoffman as he pings a drive on eight. That ball is in the long grass.

"Fore right", yells Justin Thomas on five. That ball is in the long grass.

Rickie Fowler leaves one hanging near the cup on six but taps in for par. They need to start dropping for him if this is to become a chase.

    Matsuyama (-8 after 9)

Hideki's been hiding for a while but here he is at nine with a chance to reach nine under...

No, just slid it wide. Matsuyama stays five shots off the lead. He'll need a massive back nine to contend.

    Fleetwood (-11 after 5), Koepka (-13 after 5)

Koepka has the chance to reach 14 under with yet another birdie chance. Yet again he's dragged it short though.

Fleetwood has an up-the-hill short but tricky one for par - makes it easily.

A six-hole stretch from number eight to 13 will tell us much about the destination of this title.

That's because none of those drags are playing easy statistically.

The 11th is the most gettable of all of them but there are eight easier holes on the course if that makes sense. So this run of six is challenging throughout. Keep your eyes on the leaders working through them and you'll have a good idea of who will win by the time they are done on 13.

    Thomas (-9 after 4) Harman (-13 after 4)

Justin Thomas waves his hands in protest. I think he's gesturing to that bloke in the sky who goes by the name Wind.

As we just told you, his ball blew a couple of feet back from the hole on four and guess what, he missed the consequent four footer. All they hype yesterday, he's been pure tripe today.

Harman is in for par. Unspectacular but he'll take it,

    Hoffman (-10 after 7)

Charley on the charge? Hoffman makes his second birdie of the day on seven to move to 10 under and three shots off the leaders.

  14. 'It's gusting'published at 21:49 British Summer Time 18 June 2017

    Jay Townsend
BBC Radio 5 live at Erin Hills

Today the course is not bouncy but it is windy and provides a stern test for the players.

They have to make adjustments with the lines they take off the tee. With the wind the players must adjust, that being said, the wind tends to come from the same direction on this course. Players like it like that and also they prefer a constant wind rather than gusting.

  15. Wind ball!published at 21:48 British Summer Time 18 June 2017

    Thomas (-10 after 3) Harman (-13 after 3)

Brian Harman and Brooks Koepka will be happy with this start will they not? One or two around them faltering already, they go about their business steadily. Harman hits the dancefloor on the fourth and will look to two-putt from range for par. Justin Thomas has a slice of luck as a gust keeps his ball short of a bunker. That really was some good fortune.

Now he will chip, his third on this par four, nice job. His ball settles a foot away. Hang on though, the wind is blowing his ball back a little. A one foot putt turns into three feet. Maybe it's true what they say, luck levels out.

  16. Postpublished at 21:46 British Summer Time 18 June 2017

    Fleetwood (-11 after 4), Koepka (-13 after 4)

These two continue to look the smoothest pairing out there.

Two good-looking drives on five with equally good-looking results.

  17. Bogeypublished at 21:44 British Summer Time 18 June 2017

    Fowler (-10 after 5)

Rickie Fowler found some trouble on five off the tee as you can see below. He lashed his ball out of there though and then lifts a wedge in close. A par putt to come of four feet, this is key... pushes it... right. Bogey.

"Harman's birdie on the tough par-four third is like picking up a shot and a half on the field."

  19. Huge savepublished at 21:40 British Summer Time 18 June 2017

    Fleetwood (-11 after 4), Koepka (-13 after 4)

Koepka misses out on that birdie - and misses big, leaving himself a tricky par putt on four.

Not as tough as the one Fleetwood faces though - he has 17ft for his par.

Oh what a putt. Massive save for Fleetwood, a potentially round-defining moment.

Koepka calmly steps up and drains his too to stay in a share of the lead.

    Harman (-13 after 3) Thomas (-13 after 3)

Brian Harman has watched Justin Thomas make a solid par on 3 and now he has around 30ft for birdie himself. Downhill, it's not a nice one to be over. Here she comes, gathering speed, looks close, looks very close... it's in.

The ball does a lap of the cup before dropping just to give that putt an added lashing of panache.

    Big moment for Harman.
