    McIlroy -1 (12)

Rory McIlroy goes route one on the 13th, taking out the big dog and blasting one over the trees and landing in the middle of the fairway. Position A. 325 yards down, 163 to go on the par five...

    H Li -4 (16)

Nope, Li hasn't been that lucky. He's in the trees, chopping at his ball with the delicacy of a woodcutter, slicing it out and up towards the green. The world number 42 has a wedge into the green, over the bunker on the left.

  3. Down and up Hattonpublished at 22:08 British Summer Time 5 April 2018

    Hatton +1 (13)

England's Tyrrell Hatton was in danger of letting a good start slip away with a double bogey five on the par-three 12th after playing in the sand.

However, his three-over score returned to one-over on the next. A superb second to eight feet on the par-five 13th and he rolled in the eagle putt.

Phil Mick on 13... a wonderful tee shot leaves on the fairway and looking good for an eagle chance. The American goes safe, to the back of the green, good chance of knocking a chip short and walking off with a birdie.

Oh, hang on... we've jinxed him. Li spanks a wild drive right, way right, on 17. Think he's ended up on the 15th fairway...

  6. Li takes outright leadpublished at 22:02 British Summer Time 5 April 2018

    H Li -4 (16)

Easy this Masters lark, isn't it? While Doug Ghim celebrates his pair of eagles, another Augusta debutant is enjoying himself a couple of holes back.

China's Haotang Li has taken the outright lead with another birdie on the 16th. The 22-year-old is having a rollercoaster of a back nine... bogey-birdie-birdie-birdie-bogey-birdie-birdie. He'll settle for a couple of pars to finish.

Wow. American amateur Doug Ghim signs off in style, knocking in his approach on the last for an eagle. That's his SECOND eagle today. Greedy...

    A Scott +4, R McIlroy -1, J Rahm +1 (11)

Rory McIlroy is tackling Amen Corner for the first time this year. His approach on the perennially-tricky 11 is steady rather than spectacular, leaving him with a lengthy birdie putt... he almost sinks it. The ball slips by the left side of the can, leaving with a simple tap-in for par.

  9. Six-way tie for leadpublished at 21:53 British Summer Time 5 April 2018

    T Finau -3 (14), H Li (15) H Stenson -3, C Hoffman -3, A Hadwin -3, P Reed -3,

Tony Finau finds the fairway off the 14th tee, but then overcooks his approach to the green and ends up nestled 22 yards beyond the pin.

The form he's in, you wouldn't rule out the American sinking one from here. He doesn't go too far away, creeping up to the pin, almost touching it, and rolling to within three feet for a relatively straightforward par putt.

Straightforward he says... after nearly sinking that monster putt from the fringes, the American carelessly shoots off target and cards a bogey.

That makes it a six-way tie for the lead. With Henrik Stenson, Patrick Reed, Charley Hoffman, Adam Hadwin and Haotong Li all joining Finau up top.

    F Couples -1 (15), Mickelson +1 (11)

Fred Couples is beating Augusta! Three birdies on 12, 13 and 15 put the 1992 champion one under. Meanwhile, on 12, Phil Mickelson is eating sand. Actually, he isn't, But he will wish he is. Lefty's ball has been dumped into the bank above the bunker guarding the front of the green, likely leaving him with an awkward stance as he looks to save par.

  11. 'It's silly hard'published at 21:44 British Summer Time 5 April 2018

    H Stenson -3

Birthday boy Henrik Stenson after his round of 69: "I'm happy with that I think I played a well played round. I feel like I left a few out there but I saved myself on a few occasions so I don't think I deserved any better. I hit a couple of drives I wasn't pleased with so I went back to the old trusty three wood.

"The margins are super tight and you've got to embrace that and take what comes out of it. It's silly hard and you can't appreciate that on TV. It's the hardest golf course in the world - and that's on a sunny day."

    J Rose +2, D Johnson +2 (9)

Justin Rose is in the sand, or quartz as I learned earlier, but coaxes superbly on the green at the ninth to give himself a four-foot putt for par. The Englishman makes it to stay two over.

Playing partner Dustin Johnson also has a simple putt to make par and remain at two over.

  13. Hadwin and Hoffman take share of clubhouse leadpublished at 21:38 British Summer Time 5 April 2018

    A Hadwin -3, C Hoffman -3

Adam Hadwin and Charley Hoffman headed out in the same pairing, they head back in with a share of the clubhouse lead.

It's a dropped shot from each at the 18th though, Hadwin three-putting for bogey and Hoffman following suit.

They won't be complaining about that opening round, mind. Henrik Stenson the other player home at three under.

    T Finau -4 (13)

If you've haven't already seen Finau's mishap then check it out on your favourite social media site. Warning: it will make you wince.

  15. Finau takes share of the leadpublished at 21:34 British Summer Time 5 April 2018

    T Finau -4 (13)

This is incredible. Tony Finau continues the fine start to his Masters debut with another birdie on the 13th.

The American takes a share of the lead with Charley Hoffman and Adam Hadwin. Oh, and did we mention Finau dislocated his ankle last night?

Does Phil Mickelson fancy himself as an arborist? He's heading into the trees on the right side of the 11th fairway...

  17. Postpublished at 21:28 British Summer Time 5 April 2018

    R Cabrera Bello +1, J Rose +2, D Johnson +2 (8)

The final group out at Augusta looked pretty exciting: Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson, Rafa Cabrera Bello.

All three find themselves languishing down the leaderboard, with Rose and Johnson both two over through eight and Spaniard Cabrera Bello only a shot better off having slipped to three over with a double bogey at the fourth.

Rose also dropped a shot at the fourth, and then at the par-four seventh. While the second and fifth proved costly for the world number one American.

    B Watson +1, H Stenson -3, J Day +3

We have a new clubhouse leader, folks. And his name is Henrik Stenson. A very satisfactory birthday for the now 42-year-old, who has carded a three-under 69. The 2016 Open champion deserves an extra slice of cake tonight.

Playing partner Bubba Watson - fresh from a WGC Matchplay win that resurrected his seemingly drifting career - finishes one under.

And Jason Day's round looked to be running away from him, going into the turn three over, but the 2011 runner-up rallied on the back nine to finish with a

Phil Dodd: At a recent Greensomes match my partner and I halved a hole in 10.

Clive Kenyon: Many years ago I was on holiday in Orlando and played with 3 Americans at the International Club there. The 2nd hole was 666yds off the tips and the Americans wanted to do that. I had a 9 and the Americans scored 14, 15 and 23, the latter with no penalty shots! It took us 50 mins to play the hole! Never forgot it!
