If you'd said 12 hours ago that we'd have an American leading the Masters by two shots at the halfway stage, I'd have put 100 US dollars on that man being Jordan Spieth.

But golf has a habit of throwing up surprises and that means it is Patrick Reed who leads the 82nd Masters going into the weekend.

Leader Patrick Reed on his six-under 66: "I was really steady throughout the entire day, got myself in a position where I could attack the pin positions. You have to give yourself opportunities and then I let my putter do the work. I've been working really hard on my putting speed, the biggest thing has been getting the speed down, and letting the ball hit the hole. My speed been really solid.

However... this field is still wide open. Especially with tomorrow's weather forecast...

Henrik Stenson followed his opening 69 with a 70 to sit third, four behind halfway leader Patrick Reed.

The Swede said: "I again managed my way around the golf course in a good way. My irons and putter feels good.

"I wish for a little bit better on the long game but I kept it together nicely.

"All in all i'm in a good spot and I'd like to feel I've got another gear for the weekend."

Justin Thomas is asked what the difference was between the round one 74 and today's 67 that leaves him at three under: "Not a lot. The putter felt a little bit better I thought back to what Jordan did last year when he shot four over and came back, so I'm just happy to get round in the 60s."

Patrick Reed pulls his tee-shot on the 18th to the left, landing in the large bunker at the foot of the incline. His shot out of the trap looks good... ohh, that is unlucky. The ball lands on the front of the green but can't hang on.

The American knocks a sublime chip with tapping-in distance, signing for a six-under 66 containing nine birdies. Excellent round from the 27-year-old - he'd never recorded a sub-70 round at Augusta until this week.

Australia's Marc Leishman had four birdies and an eagle in his five-under 67 today to catapult him to second on the leaderboard on seven under.

He said: "My iron play and putting were really good. When i put myself in bad situations, such as on the seventh, my short game got me out of it."

When asked about playing with Tiger Woods, he said: "If you're going to be contending for this tournament you need to play in front of big crowds and hopefully that's put me in good stead for later in the tournament."

The Iceman makes no mistake with these. Henrik Stenson converts for a par, confirming his place in the penultimate pairing with Rory McIlroy.

Patrick Reed isn't a man who lacks confidence. And again he backs himself with the short stick to save par on the 17th and maintain his two-shot lead. On to the last...

Stenson is short of the green on the last, up and down from here will send him out tomorrow with Rory McIlroy.

He's got some loft in his club, lobbing it about halfway to the pin and letting it run towards the holes. in fact, it almost runs into the hole, just an inch or two further right and it would have dropped.

Tiger Woods endured another scrambling round, three over for the front nine but he came back level par to finish four over par for the tournament.

He said: "I didn't hit irons very well today. And although I didn't make anything on the greens,I hit some beautiful putts. But when I missed greens, i didn't miss in the correct spots.

"I need a lot of help (to win the Masters). I need to shoot something mid 60s both days. I need to hit low tomorrow and see what the weather brings but I'm so far back I'm not in control of my own destiny.

"It's incredible to be able to play golf again. Six months ago I didn't know if I would ever play golf again. Here we are and I'm staying for the weekend at at the Masters. It's pretty good although I'm a long way back."

Patrick Reed, after that awful hook off the tee, gets back in the game on 17, punching a second shot out from behind the trees to just short of the green. Another delicate chip leaves him within five foot for a par.

Finally something for Sergio Garcia to smile about. The defending champion signs off with a birdie on the 18th, meaning he won't finish as the lowest-ranked professional this week. Instead, he finishes as the joint lowest-ranked professional.

Justin Thomas, who has accompanied him for the past two days, signs for a five-under 67 which leaves him tied sixth along Dustin Johnson and Charley Hoffman.

Can Henrik Stenson further close the gap? He's made a positive start with a near-300 yard drive down the 18th fairway. Behind him Patrick Reed has pulled his tee-shot on 17 left...

Those dreaming of a Jordan Spieth/Rory McIlroy pairing tomorrow have just been woken up by Henrik Stenson. The Swede rolls in a 15-foot birdie putt on the 17th to move into outright third place.

Are things about to get a whole lot more interesting? Patrick Reed daintily skips towards his ball on the 16th green as it threatens to come back down the hill. Mark it quick!

That leaves him with a seven-footer to save par... missed it. That's his first three-putt of the week and pegs him back to a two-shot lead.
