    R Fowler -9, J Rahm -9 (2)

Rickie Fowler's dressed like a particularly pithy tangerine. His white sweater completing a lairy cap and trousers.

Fowler found the bunker at two, clipped out and is on the green in three. He two putts to make a second successive par.

Jon Rahm gives the patrons following him on the second a wave, accompanied by a little a chuckle - he knows after rolling his eagle putt up to within inches of the pin it's going down for a birdie.

    He moves to nine under.

  3. Thomas comes close to ruining his trouserspublished at 20:00 British Summer Time 8 April 2018

You know when it's raining and you step on a loose paving slab? And the water squelches out and over your trouser leg? We've all done it. Justin Thomas had the golfing equivalent in the creek on the second...

Patrick Reed reacts well to that nervy start, cracking a 325-yard straight drive down the second fairway. Position A.

That's after Rory McIlroy goes route one - straight over the corner. Avoiding the predicament that Justin Thomas found himself in a little earlier...

A touch of luck for Rahm, as the Spaniard's swirling approach catches an Augusta gust and drifts right towards the bunker before bobbling off the bank in the direction of the green.

    A 45-footer for eagle awaits...

The second is a dogleg left which may be reachable in two. Large, deep greenside bunkers demand special attention on the second shot.

One of the statistics which is always trotted out at Augusta is that no player has ever shot all four rounds in the 60s.

Patrick Reed could do that today but imagine if he shot a 69 and Rory McIlroy managed a 66 and then edged him out in the play-off.

That would be fairly tough to take for the Texan.

You can listen to Alistair and the rest of the BBC Radio 5 live team from 20:00 BST. A link will appear at the top of this page.

If Rory brings the same putter as he had in his hand yesterday - all week, in fact - this won't be a problem. McIlroy confidently rattles straight into the middle, a great save after a horrific tee-shot.

Over to Reed... he keeps his cool and converts for a bogey. Some early light for McIlroy and the rest of the field.

Up ahead of the leaders, Rickie Fowler has found some sand.

The American drove his ball into the fairway bunker and can barley see out of it, such is the lip. He looks like a kid fooling around in the Formby dunes.

He pops out on to the fairway, which partner Jon Rahm found first time.

Reed has a 45-foot putt for a par... I suspect one shot, at least, is going here. Reed starts right, it stays right, but is nicely weighted from a long way out. A bogey putt is not a formality though...

It's amazing what one night's sleep can do to a player. It's an excruciating wait from the time you wake up to that 2:40 tee-off time.

What is going on? Reed seems to be having a attack of nerves, thinning his bunker shot past the flag to the back of the first green. Can McIlroy seize on that? Yes. Much better from the Northern Irishman who deftly clips out to within six feet.

Patrick Reed to go first... he doesn't have many practice swings. Strange, seeing as there's a tree right in front of him. The leader clobbers the trunk on his follow-through, but it doesn't seem to be a terrible strike. Ah, it doesn't have the legs and is in the bunker on the left.

McIlroy is a lucky boy... he has a line. Good connection from the pines, but he's ended up keeping Reed company in the sand.

I can't believe that from McIlroy. He was completely out of control of his downswing. Probably because he knows he has to be aggressive from the off and put the pressure on Reed. Good news? His ball is in play.
