    J Thomas -5, J Spieth -6 (1)

Jordan Spieth is up and running with a birdie at the first.

The American remains a long way off the pace, but his putter is already sizzling after sinking a seven-footer to climb to six under.

I think strictly speaking it is between the top four, maybe top five.

But the calibre of that chasing pack, they don't have too many people to overtake, they can't be discounted.

How do you warm up before a round? Chocolate bar and a quick fag? I actually go as far as a few double club swings and maybe some arm stretches. Rory McIlroy uses a resistance band to warm ups this biceps and pecs. Maybe that's why he's a professional and I'm a 15-handicapper...

    P Reed -14, R McIlroy -11 (tee-time 19:40 BST)

Journalist Alex Miceli from the Morning Read on BBC Radio 5 live: "Patrick Reed is not getting enough credit. He has done exactly what everyone said he had to do going into Saturday. He shoots 67 and Rory McIlroy shoots 65 then guess what? Patrick Reed - Green Jacket.

"The guy who is running around here for three days, and basically schooling the rest of the field, is not going to sit down and fall over and play dead just because Rory McIlroy is on the tee."

  11. 'It all comes down to the mind'published at 19:06 British Summer Time 8 April 2018

Gary Player in BBC studioImage source, BBC Sport

Gary Player is in fine form in the BBC studio, demonstrating the art of tai chi while showing us how he'd get himself motivated before a round. He's 82, remember.

"I'd sit there and really slap myself and say you're going to win, you're going to hole putts. It's all up to you and so it's the man with the best mind. I never choked in my life. I lost, I was second in seven majors but I never choked and it all comes back to the mind. Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods are the best examples of that, they can play badly and still shoot low."

Jordan Spieth, the 2015 champion, takes to the first tee - and if you stick BBC Two on, or click the link at the top of this page, you can watch live coverage of the American, his partner Justin Thomas and the rest of those already out at Augusta.

Spieth was the overnight leader on day one, but now sits nine shots off Patrick Reed's lead.

  13. 'It's been a joy to watch'published at 19:01 British Summer Time 8 April 2018

    P Reed -14, R McIlroy (tee time 19:40 BST)

    Ken Brown
    BBC Sport commentator

I think Rory McIlroy is in as good a position as he could hope to be. What I've enjoyed is he seems to have some sort of inner calm.

He knows it's a big day but he hasn't put himself under too much pressure.

He's only had four bogeys, occasionally he has hit an errant shot but it's been a real professional performance. It's been a joy to watch.

Patrick Reed has never won a major title.

The world number 24 had never shot under 70 at Augusta until this week, missing the cut on two of his four previous Masters appearances.

"I'm not out there to play Rory. I'm out there to play the golf course," he said.

"The biggest thing I can pull from Hazeltine is I was going head to head with Rory and was able to put together a really good round, and when he tried to make a counter, I was able to always stay ahead and keep going."

Patrick Reed and Rory McIlroy have history. Reed beat the Northern Irishman in a singles match at the 2016 Ryder Cup on the way to helping the United States win the event.

"They both tried to play that side of it down because they were going at each other. Not just with their golf, with their words," Laura Davies told BBC Radio 5 live's Sportsweek.

"This is a completely different environment. They are trying to win a Major championship. They won’t be bothered about each other’s game like you are as much in matchplay."

Let's hope for a better headline than this one from 2003. That's not any slight on Mike Weir of course, but we're sure you can do better.

Don't feel I've done the American justice here - that first eagle at the par-four seventh was made with his approach from the fairway... dropping into the cup from 166 yards!

  20. Eagle alertpublished at 18:35 British Summer Time 8 April 2018

    W Simpson -2 (8)

Webb Simpson's doing a bit of bird watching at Augusta, and he's spotted not one but two eagles coming through the back stretch of the front nine.

The American began the day at three over par, but after birdieing the par-five second he has gone and carded back-to-back eagles at seven and eight to move to two under for the tournament.
