    T Finau -7 (18)

Not sure if Tony Finau's odds rocketed on Wednesday night or not, but anyone who did back him each way then will be laughing now.

The American's participation looked in jeopardy after dislocating his ankle - while celebrating a hole in one during the annual par three contest.

But a few anti-inflammatory tablets, a bag of frozen peas and maybe a touch of luck helped get him fit and ready.

And he's responded with a magnificent week, briefly leading on day one and now up in the top 10 after finishing with six birdies in the final seven holes.

    J Spieth -12 (14)

Jordan Spieth can't turn his back-to-back birdies into a third on the bounce, but clips a 31-footer to within a few feet of the cup and prods it home.

    Four to play.

Chris: Rory will be disappointed to have missed so many putts, but I don't think you could ever classify 1 over after 9 on the final day at Augusta as "poor."

    J Rahm -10 (11), R Fowler -10 (11)

Outside chance of a much-needed birdie for Jon Rahm at the 11th. He needs these to start dropping again if the Spaniard is to make inroads on Spieth and Reed.

Rahm tickles it up to the flag from 40 feet. It doesn't hit its target, but he makes do with par.

What Rory could do with now is a birdie to get him going. Problem is there has only been three of those on the perennially-troublesome 11th all day.

Let's look at this way: a birdie here could be that spark we talked about him needing to galvanise his round.

A good start... he's cruising down the middle. Meanwhile Patrick Reed is urging his ball to go right... so it clears the trees on that side of the fairway.

Seeing the sign pointing towards Amen Corner can strike fear into the minds of even the world's best golfers.

And this is where it starts. A long par-four where wind is often a factor.

The tee shot plays downhill and left to right. A pond guards the green to the left and a bunker is strategically placed right centre.

Is this going to be the spark which sends an electric current through McIlroy's round? He needs it... Nope, it has wriggled past the right side and he keeps his focus to convert the putt back.

McIlroy stays in that pack on 10 under with Rickie Fowler and Jon Rahm, who are two adrift now of Jordan Spieth.

Reed tactically two putts to keep his two-shot lead over Spieth.

    J Spieth -12 (13)

Jordan Spieth middles his tee shot at the par-four 14th down the fairway, and then lashes an approach some 160 yards up to the green.

    He thinks it's short.

"Did it stay up there?" he quizzes. It did. "There's no way that stayed up there... oh, that's so good."

The American's starting to believe luck is on his side...

McIlroy urges his ball to sit on his approach from the 10th fairway. That it does, ending up pin high, about 20 feet to the right. That's where Jon Rahm was about two minutes ago, the Spaniard's birdie chance slipping past the left lip.

Reed is reaching for the putter too, he's about the same distance away, but coming up the slope from the front of the green,

    J Spieth -12 (13)

Spieth's eagle putt doesn't catch the line... he berates it, with a hint of a smile.

Instead it's a birdie for the 2015 champion, one that moves him to within two strokes of the leader.

    No bother for Jordan Spieth.

"Go, go, go," the American screams at his ball as he pops an approach from the straw surrounding the fairway into the meat of the green and watches it skip on towards the flag.

    Another eagle chance...

This long par four plays steeply downhill and features a nearly 60-yard-long center bunker well short of the green. Players will try to drive the ball to the left center for the best angle into a green that pitches right to left. Until 1935, this was the first hole. It is traditionally the most difficult hole on the course.

That is a disappointing front nine from McIlory. A one-over-par 37 and he's putting poorly. Every one of his Masters challenges has been undone by a poor nine-hole sequence and perhaps that was the one this year.

He has to do something very special on the back nine.

Stunning stuff from Patrick Reed. His chip back on to the ninth checks just past the pin, then uses the slope to roll back towards the hole. That leaves a short putt which the majorless American converts to maintain his three-shot lead over Jordan Spieth.

Spieth has taken sole control of second place for time being, McIlroy unable to stick with him after sliding that birdie putt to the right.

Reed is level for the front nine, McIlroy one over. Two of a handful of players who aren't in the red.
