  1. Another triple bogey for Gregorypublished at 16:24 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    Gregory +18 (14)

It's rare to see one in a round, but England's Scott Gregory has the unwanted distinction of having two triple bogey sevens in this round. After one at the third, he adds another at the 14th.

Just two pars in 14 holes for the 2016 British amateur champion, which he has offset with those two triple bogeys, eight bogeys and two double bogeys.

Anyway, the wind is causing all sorts of problem over in New York and only six players currently sit below par.

But Rory McIlroy taps in for another bogey - he drops to a staggering 10 over over just 11 holes.

    Thanks, Matt.

Robbie Williams sort of relevant. The world's best golfers struggling at Shinnecock Hills.

You'd be forgiven for thinking it was 2004 all over again.

Right then. With the course getting no easier I'm off for a breather. I bet I'll still be seeing Rory McIlroy wading through thick grass in my sleep tonight.

Here's Alex Bysouth to take you through the next period of play.

I'm loving this!! Sick of seeing -20 week after week. A true test, where mistakes are punished. Plus, I can watch this safe in the knowledge that I do know how Rory must be feeling! I'm +6 after seven holes most weeks!!

  6. Poulter regains co-leadpublished at 16:16 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    Pouller -2 (11)

Ian Poulter looks to be playing the best golf on the course right now. Jordan Spieth triple bogeyed the 11th earlier but the Englishman has just knocked in a birdie two to regain his place at the top of the leaderboard, alongside Matt Kuchar.

Kuchar has used all of his experience today in his bogey-free round with two birdies in nine holes.

  7. Bogey for McIlroypublished at 16:10 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    McIlroy +9 (10)

With 10 holes played Rory McIlroy has now hit three double bogeys and four bogeys. It has been an absolute nightmare.

The latest double comes after his third on the first from ankle deep rough, sails into a bunker and he takes three more from there.

There are only four players worse off than the Northern Irishman.

Jordan Spieth also drops a shot. He had 150 yards from the centre of the fairway but pushed his approach into a bunker, despite pleading with his ball to stay left. A plugged lie meant he could only escape to 38 feet and then two-putted to go back to five over.

Phil Mickelson had a great look at birdie but his eight-footer slid by the left edge and he walked off with par.

  8. Double bogey for Hillpublished at 16:07 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    Hill E (6)

Scotland's Calum Hill is the next to feel the full force of this Shinnecock Hills course. The 23-year-old had moved into a tie of the lead on his major debut but gives back the two shots he picked up on the previous hole.

A wayward drive proves costly and he takes four to reach the green. He misses a six-foot bogey putt but knocks in from four to drop back to level par.

Rory meanwhile is going to drop yet another shot...

    McIlroy +7 (9)

Rory McIlroy is fuming. He's stomping around the golf course, not impressed in the slightest at how things are going.

Once again he's wading through the long grass, trying to find his ball to the right of the first fairway.

The former world number one uses all of his power to hack out of the long grass but hits the ball across the fairway to more, albeit slightly shorter rough.

This guy is one of the best players in the world remember. This wind and rough is enough to make you lay awake at night in cold sweats.

  10. Bogey for Poulterpublished at 16:00 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    Poulter -1 (10)

Ian Poulter had a blemish-free scorecard up to now but has now hit his first bogey of the day to fall back from the lead.

  11. Bogey for McIlroypublished at 15:57 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    McIlroy +7 (9), Spieth +4 (9), Mickelson +4 (9)

Rory, Jordan and Phil have reached the turn, about two hours 45 minutes after starting their round. Things aren't getting any better for McIlroy, mind. He drops another shot to fall back to seven over par.

So halfway through their rounds, Rory McIlroy is +7 and Jordan Spieth and Phil Mickelson are on +4.

They are now moving onto the supposedly easier front nine but England's Scott Gregory played those holes in a 12 over 47 shots earlier.

  13. Eagle for Scotland's Hillpublished at 15:49 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    Hill -2 (5)

I haven't mentioned Scot Calum Hill yet today but now we better start playing close attention to him. The 23-year-old, playing in his first US Open, has just jumped into a tie for the lead alongside Ian Poulter and Matt Kuchar thanks to an eagle on the fifth!

Hill has plenty of experience in the States. He recently graduated from Western New Mexico University with an MBA in business administration having also spent two as the assistant golf coach at the Silver City campus.

    McIlroy +6 (7), Spieth +5 (8), Mickelson +4 (8)

Phil Mickelson is now taking an iron off the tee on the par four 18th. Is that a sign he's going to cut his losses in these difficult, windy conditions? The flags definitely seem to be blowing even harder now.

Phil is playing alongside McIlroy and Spieth remember and this trio started on the 10th so they're halfway through their round.

Paul Christie: I know the course looks brutal but that doesn't excuse this familiar performance from McIlroy. What has he been doing the last 2 weeks? It certainly doesn't look like he has been learning the course.

  17. Shinnecock playing longerpublished at 15:32 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    Mickelson +4 (8)

Shinnecock Hills will play 449 yards longer than it did when it hosted the 2004 US Open.

Before play Phil Mickelson said he likes the added length at the par-four 14th, but isn't a fan of the lengthened par-five 16th.

"I like to make the hard holes harder and the easy holes easier," said Mickelson.

"So when they take 14, which is a very hard par-four, and they make it harder and move the tee back, I actually like that a lot because it allows for the players that are playing well to make up strokes on the field by making pars.

"I think we should have some birdie opportunities. And to eliminate one of the very few that are out here (at 16) and make it a difficult par is not something I agree with."

I wonder what he is thinking now?

  18. Birdie for Rosepublished at 15:29 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    Rose -1 (10)

    Six players under par?

    Make that seven!

Justin Rose is back in the red after a birdie on the 10th.

So under bright blue skies in the north east of the United States, the world's best golfers are struggling. There may not be a cloud up above but the wind is causing havoc, as is this difficult golf course.

There are only six players under par. They are Ian Poulter, Matt Kuchar, Scott Piercy, Aaron Baddeley, Charley Hoffman and Russell Knox.

"Oh Rory," Mr McIlroy says to himself. He's struggling badly.
