  3. 'A lot of players are struggling'published at 18:06 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    J Rose +1 (F)

Here's Justin Rose after a solid one-over-par opening round: "I didn't quite realise how good a 71 was until I got in. A lot of big name players are struggling.

"I gave myself a chance of attacking the golf course. I did enough to keep my momentum going.

"Green speeds were quicker than practice. Quicker than I thought they would be, given the wind. They have to make it hard somewhere."

    I Poulter -1 (17)

    Well played, Ian Poulter.

From the sand to an invaluable par. And he heads to the 18th with a share of the lead.

  5. Double bogey for Spiethpublished at 18:01 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    P Mickelson +6, J Spieth +8, R McIlroy +9 (16*)

Normally, you'd say Jordan Spieth's weekend was capitulating... but despite double-bogeying the he's the seventh he remains just nine shots off the lead.

That's three shots dropped on the last two holes for the US Open champion after a well-earned birdie.

Spieth left his tee shot short of the green on the par three, and then left his par putt short.

Rory McIlroy, having dug out successive birdies, also fails to find the green with his tee shot and the result is a sixth bogey of the day (there's also been three doubles...)

Good day for 2013 US Open champion Justin Rose.

Just the three bogeys for the world number three.

13 of 14 fairways hit always helps.

    I Poulter -1 (16)

Deft hands from Poulter to clip out of the bunker, but the Englishman then watches it roll away from the cup.

It leaves him seven feet to make par and maintain a share of top spot.

  8. Gay joins leadpublished at 17:51 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    B Gay -1 (1)

How about that for a perfect start!

The world's best golfers struggling to get to grips with Shinnecock Hills, and Brian Gay just struts up to a long-range birdie putt at the first to get up and running with a share of the lead.

    I Poulter -1 (16)

In the sand for Ian Poulter on the par-three 17th... just as he looked to be edging his way to a clubhouse lead.

Work to do from a bunker flanking the bottom right of the green for the Englishman.

  10. Bogeys for Spieth & Mickelsonpublished at 17:44 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    P Mickelson +6, J Spieth +6, R McIlroy +8 (15*)

Jordan Spieth trudges off the sixth green. Head bowed, another bogey to his name.

It's been a difficult round for the three-time major champion. He's at six over.

Phil Mickelson follows suit, but there's a late surge from Rory McIlroy - sort of. The Northern Irishman makes back-to-back birdies to climb to eight over.

  11. 80 for amateur Ellispublished at 17:41 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    H Ellis +10 (F)

British Amateur champion Harry Ellis is back in the clubhouse after a 80.

Eight bogeys and a triple have done the damage, with just the one birdie for the English amateur.

Ian Poulter with the luxury of having two putts for par at the mammoth 16th.

The joint-leader is some 12 feet from the pin, facing down the slope with his birdie attempt. And rolls it just short.

The Englishman strolls up to it with intent and pokes it away.

Andrew Priestley: I know the USGA have a long and proud history of setting-up the US Open course to provide a stern golfing test, but they really have to take a long, hard look at themselves here

    Tee-times (all times BST)

A few names to whet the appetite going out in the next hour or so. That 18:47 one particularly intriguing...

    First tee

    I Poulter -1 (15)

Ian Poulter criss-crossing the 16th fairway. The 620-yard par-five playing long... still some 85 to go to reach the pin.

He'll be happy to keep chalking off the pars on the run in.

  16. 'I walked off the golf course after four holes'published at 17:28 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    S Piercy -1 (F)

"I walked off the golf course after four holes yesterday because I was so frustrated. I looked at my Instagram account at some of the good swings I have had and that helped," said Scott Piercy on Sky Sports.

  17. Birdies all roundpublished at 17:26 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    P Mickelson +5, J Spieth +5, R McIlroy +9 (14*)

Something to smile about for Jordan Spieth!

The American makes birdie at the par-five fifth, just his second of the day, rolling from just short of 10 feet.

    Time for a strong finish?

Now Mickelson and McIlroy fancy a slice of the birdie action too... that takes Rory back into single figures, and Leftie keeps pace with Spieth.

  18. Piercy sets clubhouse leadpublished at 17:16 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    S Piercy -1 (F)

American Scott Piercy lays down the early marker.

Three birdies and just the two bogeys is a good day at the office, especially when the office is as unforgiving as this.

Piercy, who claimed a tie for second at the 2016 US Open, finished his first round of 69 with six straight pars. That's how it's done.

  19. Postpublished at 17:15 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    P Mickelson +6, J Spieth +6, R McIlroy +10 (13*)

Now it's Phil Mickelson mumbling and muttering as he thinks his approach at the fifth has gone awry, but it catches the slope and lands favourably for the American.

Might fancies his chance at a birdie from there...

Jordan Spieth nets a similar bounce and almost follows Leftie to the edge of the green.

  20. It's all over for Gregory (well for today)published at 17:13 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    S Gregory +22 (F)

It's fair to say England's Scott Gregory is at the bottom of the leaderboard and should stay there for the rest of the day.

Three pars, 10 bogeys, three double bogeys and two triple bogeys make it a day to forget.

He hit just five of 14 fairways and four of 18 greens in regulation.
