Right, so with all the leaders back in the clubhouse it's time for us to wrap things up here.

World number one Dustin Johnson, England's Ian Poulter, and Americans Scott Piercy and Russell Henley all sit at one under par heading into the second round at Shinnecock Hills.

Brandt Snedeker bogeys the last and he drops to two over par.

Byeong Hun An has a birdie chance... this could take him to level par. He can't take it, but it's a solid round from the South Korean to remain two shots off the lead.

Here's joint-leader Dustin Johnson: "It feels good. It was very tough out there. There was not one easy shot. You really had to focus on where you wanted to leave your ball.

"I am very pleased with the way I played. I felt I controlled my ball very well. I felt like I did a good job today. I stayed patient, never tried to get aggressive.

"In conditions like this you know par on every hole is a good score.

"To play a real solid round in tough conditions, I am very proud of myself."

Jason Dufner tucks away for a smart par at the last.

That keeps him in fifth, one stroke behind that four-way tie for the lead.

Jason Dufner moves on to the 18th green, looking to squeeze into that leading pack.

He's not going to be making birdie though after his chip up the green starts right and stays right.

He faces a lengthy putt for par... and we know how those have been going.

Henrik Stenson is well in the mix. A par at the last for the Swede, who made five birdies in his round after a tricky start down the back nine.

And here he is: "That's as good as a comeback as I have ever had, I three-putted from long range and had a bit of a mare at 14.

"So to be four over after five, things aren't looking too bright. But a couple of good birdies, then hit some really good shots and scrambled hard on the front nine.

"We are still at the races. You can laugh, you can cry. I chose to laugh today.

"The greens aren't that nice to putt on, they are quite bumpy. You take good care of every putt and hope they are going to go in. Some of the pin positions are so brutal out there."

Back on the 17th and guess who is staring at another birdie putt?

Step forward Jason Dufner. It's a fair bit longer than his tap-in on the 16th and he's setting it out a good four-feet to the right of the cup. He's overborrowed there. Another shot left out on the course and he stays at level par with one to play.

On coming off the course: You feel exhausted - they'll be delighted to be off it. DJ knows he's done a very good day's work. He has a steely looked about him. They have early tee times tomorrow so it is kind of relentless. They'll need to find some time to chill tonight.

Here's Russell Henley, tied for the lead at one under: "I can play well in windy conditions and knew I could post a score and hit greens. I was just going to be as patient as I could and stay tough out there.

"I play in the wind a lot. I feel like I am more control when I hit it lower. I was using my instincts (on the greens) not trying to be too precise.

"The start of the day they were receptive. On the back nine they got really firm. It got pretty firm out there.

"I am excited to play. I feel good about my game. Physically I feel good."

DJ uses the slope, and rolls his third shot up towards the flag before popping it confidently away for par. Johnson signs off for a one-under 69.

Tiger Woods runs his on with a little up-and-down, nestling up to the cup and raising his hand to the crowd in appreciation. A par for Woods as well.

Justin Thomas is the only one of the trio with a birdie shot. It starts left, cuts back right and just shoots beyond the lip. Knees bent in frustration, he could have done with that.

Dustin Johnson with 200 yards to the pin. He steams it up on to the green, but that's only just crept on, and it will roll back down again.

Tiger Woods just avoids the lip of the bunker. He's furious. But it'll trickle on down.

Justin Thomas attacking the pin from a lot closer. 104 yards to the flag. He coaxes it up the hill, it spins in and fizzes to a stop around 20 feet or so from the cup.

Sound the klaxons.

Jason Dufner, coming off successive bogeys, finally holes a birdie putt on the back nine. He's had enough looks and finally he gets one to drop. Admittedly it was only a couple of feet, after an excellent lob out of a greenside bunker on the par-five 16th.

But we've seen the Duffmeister struggle with the flatstick since missing a short par putt on the seventh, missing several birdie opportunities.

Tiger Woods isn't messing around. He opts to drive off the tee but draws it right and finds the first cut.

Justin Thomas goes long, tipping the 400-yard mark, and finding the top of the fairway.

Oh dear, Justin Thomas drags what looked like a straightforward par putt left and has to tap in for bogey.

Dustin Johnson doesn't want to make the same mistake. And he doesn't, rattling it down the throat of the cup.

Tiger Woods also polishes off for par.

Tommy Fleetwood taps in on the 18th for a five-over 75. Four bogeys in five holes on the back nine blighting his card but a decent birdie on the long 16th keeps him interested heading into Friday.

A decent start for the Englishman who finished fourth at last year's US Open.

Justin Thomas rolls his birdie putt up to within four feet of the flag. Things are quietening down a bit in New York, the crowd looking a little more sparse... or all heading for the grandstand at the 18th.

Dustin Johnson plays safe and rolls his second shot up to a putt-able distance, while Tiger Woods starts his a fair way right and watches it loop back in to a few inches below the cup.

On to the par-three 17th for the marquee group... Justin Thomas and Dustin Johnson both find the bottom of the green, Tiger Woods prods his ever-so-slightly closer to the pin.

A long way to play for any birdies here, though.

Jon Rahm at the last, looking to nudge one in from about six feet for par and a respectable six-over 76. But he misses and then inexplicably leaves the two-foot bogey putt on the green.

The Spaniard can barely believe it. He stands motionless, with his hand across his face, for what feels like an eternity. He's got a bit of a temper has Mr Rahm. But he manages to keep himself in check. I reckon the putter might end up in two when he's away from prying eyes though.

That's an eight-over 78 and a bit more work to do to make the cut than he thought he would have to do about 30 seconds earlier.
