Queues around the block to get into the stand at the start of the first hole. They've missed Rory tee off but will they be in their seats in time to see Tiger?

Tom Watson won The Open five times so he knows what he is talking about and believes patience will be a key factor at Carnoustie today.

"I wish I was out there playing," he told BBC Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek.

"The question with Tiger Woods has always been can he withstand his injuries? Can he come back from his injuries and compete at the highest level? He has proven he can.

"The key for him is the patience factor. I'm sure he is champing at the bit to make things happen today but when you try to make things happen on this golf course it can come out and bite you.

"I think the R & A were a little embarrassed by all the low scores yesterday and it looks like the flag positions are in very difficult places today.

"Tiger will be nervous. Like we all are. If anybody has the chance to win the open or any championship, there is an element of nerves. It's how you deal with those nerves.

  3. Woods to begin shortlypublished at 14:21 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

    T Woods -5, F Molinari -6 (tee times 14:25)

We all know the problems Tiger Woods has faced over recent years. He has not won a major since 2008.

This is the first time he has been on the top 10 of the leaderboard going into the final round for three years.

    But now he is back.

Sweden's Alex Noren and American Webb Simpson whack their first shots off the tee on the opening hole. Simpson looks a little concerned while his ball is up in the breeze but it comes down to rest safely on the fairway.

Tiger Woods and Francesco Molinari are up next on the first...

The wind is unquestionably stronger than yesterday and getting stronger with every passing minute. The score operators at the old fashioned board by the practice ground are experiencing problems with some of their coloured plastic digits flying off in the wind!

  6. Bogey for Kucharpublished at 14:17 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

    R McIlroy -5, M Kuchar -4 (1)

An early traipse through the longer grass for Kuch, and he digs it out towards the pin before skipping on beyond the flag.

Putter from the fringes for Rory, looks to have the line but not quite the legs - few feet to tap in for par, and down it goes.

Long par-saver to come for Matt Kuchar, but he can't scramble down - a two-putt bogey after finding the rough with his approach.

I’m ensconced by the side of the first green next to a bunch of Scotsmen. They are here “for the banter” rather than being big golf fans. They are getting involved though.

“Go on Tommy” they roar as the Englishman, with a huge grin on his face, strides past.

“Who’s this other geezer,” they enquire as Zach Johnson wanders off. I tell them. “Go on Zach lad” they shout.

Brilliant atmosphere in this natural bowl.

Justin Rose for a three on the par-four second... he needs to jump on the birdie train as soon as possible.

A good push gives it a fighting chance... Rose's look to the floor and slight shake of the head tells us it isn't going to be enough. Par.

You can see the breeze whipping through Matt Kuchar's shirt. He's some way back and opts for a hybrid, but that's well right...

Rory McIlroy is just a wedge from the green after that mammoth drive. He clips it high into the Carnoustie sky, a little wayward, and just avoids a greenside bunker.

  12. Bogey for Johnsonpublished at 14:12 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

    T Fleetwood -6, Z Johnson -4 (1)

While Tommy Fleetwood moves a shot closer to the leaders, Zach Johnson moves a shot back.

His approach leaves him with a downhill putt that he can't stick within a tap-in, then lips out with his par putt.

Tiger Woods is hitting his final shots on the range. He'll begin his round in 15 minutes along side Francesco Molinari.

The American smashes a drive into the distance and then plucks an iron out of the bag for a few final swings.

Tremendous putt from Tommy Fleetwood. Great start for Tommy. He has got the crowd behind him, you would have thought he was Scottish with the following he has got.

  17. Birdie for Fleetwoodpublished at 14:10 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

    T Fleetwood -6, Z Johnson -5 (1)

Tommy Fleetwood has not started a round this week with a birdie on the first... this would be a great start. Not going to be easy though, it's a lengthy putt... he's nailed it!

What a start for the Carnoustie course record holder...

When Rory McIlroy clinched the 2014 Open title at Hoylake, it saw the Northern Irishman become only the third player after Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods to win three majors at the age of 25.

Only the PGA Championship, later that year, has followed since and the career Grand Slam still eludes McIlroy with the Masters remaining the only major he is still to win.

Four years on from that success and McIlroy will be looking to channel the spirit of his Open win in 2014, when he won by two strokes from Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler.

  20. McIlroy under waypublished at 14:07 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

    R McIlroy -5, M Kuchar -5 (14:05 BST)

A first sighter of Rory McIlroy for the Carnoustie crowd on Sunday, pink top, continuously adjusting his white baseball cap. He's out with Matt Kuchar today.

Rory takes his driver to the first tee, he's near enough driven the green here throughout the week. A real thwack behind that one, starting down the right and skittling up for a good look at the pin.

"Kuuuuuuch," is the cry that follows, and the American also reaches for his big-hitter, but with not quite as much carry.
