Good reception for England’s other main hope Tommy Fleetwood on the first tee as he gets his round off and running in the company of 2015 champion Zach Johnson.

One very loud and unmistakably Scottish shout of “Come on Tommy”. Only five groups to tee off now and still there’s a queue to get on the first tee stand.

Then again, Rory’s next off, followed 20 minutes later by the Tiger.

The first plays slightly uphill from the tee and as you reach the top you feel the full force of the wind. It’s still stiff as opposed to brutal. Perhaps a one club difference playing into it.

Thousands round the first green, and hanging over the grandstand overlooking the third and 15th greens willing Rose’s putt in.

Not many are leaving their vantage points to follow the Englishman though. Rory, Tommy and Tiger are all coming through in the next half hour or so.

Can Zach Johnson meet Tommy Fleetwood on the green? The 2015 champ is not convinced by his club selection, deliberating with his caddie over the best choice of stick.

He trusts the man of his bag, commits to the shot and ends up past the flag and on the dancefloor. Job's a good one.

Fleetwood on the first...about 160 yards to the pin, into a 16mph wind, iron in hand.

"It's a bit of a feely one innit? he says to caddie Ian Finnis. Fleetwood feels it well. Flights over the bunker, one bounce, a little roll and a birdie chance.

Rory McIlroy feels he is still in strong contention at the Open despite dropping a couple of late shots yesterday.

The 2014 Open champion bogeyed the 16th and 18th to fall back to five under par, four shots off the lead heading into his final round.

"I felt I did well to get to three under par for the round after 15 - it was a good birdie there," said the Northern Irishman.

"I'm obviously disappointed after the way I finished, but I'm still in the tournament. I'm only a few shots behind.

"I just need to get off to a fast start."

    He's up next...

On the tee... from England... Tommy Fleetwood! Oh, we miss Ivor Robson.

Anyway... Fleetwood is given a rapturous reception on the first tee, saluting the crowd with his driver.

The world number 10 is decked out in a garish pink hat and t-shirt... hope his golf is as bright today.

Certainly is! He wallops a drive down the middle, joining playing partner Zach Johnson is that chest-puffed-out walk towards the fairway.

Scotland' sole representative at the weekend, leading amateur Sam Locke, ends a memorable week with a final round of seven-over par 78.

He had already secured the Silver Medal as the only amateur to beat the cut.

Earlier rounds of 72, 73 and 70 for Locke, but it was not to be today with just one birdie. He played the front nine in level par, but dropped seven shots on the way home.

  13. Rose under waypublished at 13:48 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

    J Rose -4, A Cook -4

That's one of the biggest cheers we've heard so far today. Justin Rose smiles and waves to the fans in the crowd as his name is read out.

Rose was nine shots behind at the halfway stage but a 64 yesterday has him just five shots back.

"Lovely," shouts someone from the stands as the Englishman puts his tee shot onto the fairway.

We've not seen an English winner of the Claret Jug since Nick Faldo at Muirfield in 1992.

Tommy Fleetwood is best-placed to break those, ahem, 26 years of hurt, although the Southport man sits four shots off the lead heading into his final round.

And Justin Rose might have something to say about it, too. He squeezed inside the cut with a birdie on the last on Friday, only to shoot a Carnoustie Open best seven-under 64 on Saturday.

It leaves him one shot behind Fleetwood, five off the lead.

Now then. Erik van Rooyen is on the charge! He follows this birdie on the first with another on the second up into a tie for fifth he goes, three shots behind the leaders.

There's no big celebration from the South African. He just raises a hand to the crowd.

  18. Final round wait like going to the dentist - Lylepublished at 13:37 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

    Jordan SpiethImage source, Getty Images

Scotland's Sandy Lyle won The Open in 1985 and says the wait to get started for the leading contenders is one of the problems they'll encounter.

"It's the late starting time that can get a bit of drag. I think I played lego with the kids of a friend of mine just to pass the time," he told BBC Radio 5 live's Sporstweek.

"The best way I can describe the last day at The Open is a bit like going to the dentist and being in the waiting room - you don't really know whether it is going to be a pleasurable experience or painful.

"The winds could be a big factor. Carnoustie is all about playing in the crosswinds and it becomes very narrow. It's who can handle the knocks on the way round. I think it's going to take below-par today.

"I think Jordan Spieth might pull through. Tommy Fleetwood will be annoyed with yesterday's round and he could come out flying. If he gets a good start, watch out."

  19. 'It is anyone's tournament'published at 13:34 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

    H Stenson +1 (F)

Henrik Stenson, speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: "I think you can shoot four or five under if you are playing good.

"The wind is up and the course is drier and firmer, so you are either playing into or against the wind and there is no cross wind.

"There are a lot of players within three or four shots, so it is anyone's tournament."
