    E van Rooyen -5 (1)

Erik van Rooyen has made a dream start on the first. He knocks in a putt from 15 feet to move level with Woods, McIlroy, Fleetwood and co at five under. Can the South African mount a charge?

His compatriot Zander Lombard has just found the green as well in the group behind. His playing partner Tony Finau does the same.

  2. Birdie chance for Mickelsonpublished at 13:29 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

    P Mickelson level (8)

Phil Mickelson is wearing a long-sleeve white shirt today, buttoned up to the top. It has not been his week but he's just put a lovely approach close on the ninth. That should be a birdie from there and should take him under par for the tournament.

Obligatory beanbag shot... the odd umbrella up but more as a sun protector because the sun is here to stay. It’s not quite cloudless but what bits there are, are high and wispy.

  4. 'It is a survival test'published at 13:22 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

Former United States Ryder Cup captain Tom Lehman says today could be a test of survival and whoever handles that best may emerge with the famous claret jug.

"Tiger was always the kind of guy who, when he got near the lead, didn't beat himself," Lehmann told BBC Radio 5 live.

"He is the best of that generation of not beating himself but chasing is a different story. With the winds blowing, it is a survival test and again one of those things where if you don't beat yourself and shoot a decent score then you have got a chance and he has done that before. If he does that then he has got a chance."

  5. Pepperell drops backpublished at 13:19 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

    E Pepperell -3 (8)

Groans on the eighth green. Eddie Pepperell takes a trip into the bunker on the par three and then fails to hole his putt for par. That's his first dropped shot of the day and sees him drop back to three under.

The Englishman's playing partner Phil Mickelson is one over for his round.

  7. 'Tiger's long-putt practice'published at 13:15 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

    BBC Sport at Carnoustie

Rory might well have been practising short putts when Diane Knox saw him on the putting green, for Tiger Woods, it’s all about the long putt. He’s knocked a couple a good 50-feet across the green. One he plonks in for a two-putt, the other lips out. Trademark red top. He tries again. Both pull up 10 feet short. A sip of juice needed. And on he goes.

Carnoustie has been set up to provide a tough test for the final round.

Despite the wind being forecast to gust up to 25mph, the course has been set to play to 7,447 yards, the longest all week and 45 yards longer than the supposed full yardage of 7,402.

Eleven of the pin positions are also located within five yards of the edge of the greens, including on the daunting 18th where the champion golfer of the year will be decided - either in regulation or via a play-off.

Italy's Francesco Molinari has the honour of being the leading European player heading into the final round of The Open.

The world number 15 has yet to win a major, but with two wins and two second place finishes in his last five starts in Europe and on the PGA Tour, is this his chance?

The BMW PGA Championship and Quicken Loans National champion made a tournament-leading 15 birdies over his first three rounds to reach six-under par, three shots off the pace.

Molinari's best finish at an Open came in 2013 at Muirfield, while his best finish in a major came at last year's PGA Championship with a tied for second at Quail Hollow.

He has yet to break into the world's top 10, can he do enough today? He will have to contend with playing with Tiger Woods and the accompany circus when the pair head off in the third last group on course.

Entertaining with 17 birdies in four rounds, but a two-under par final round of 69 is only able to pull the American back to one over for the Championship.

  17. 'Winds stronger on Sunday'published at 12:59 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

    Peter Scrivener
    BBC Sport at Carnoustie

The wind feels stronger today than at any other point this week. And that’s just by the first tee. I’d imagine it’s a bit stronger on the more exposed parts of the course - out on the second green, third tee, fifth green and down the sixth.

  18. Back-to-back birdies for Olesenpublished at 12:59 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

Shaun Norris might not be a name which ordinarily attracts packed galleries.

Playing with Tiger Woods yesterday meant the 36-year-old South African had to get used to be playing in front of huge crowds - even if they weren't focused on him.

"Absolutely crazy to think so many people can follow a person. There's a couple of holes that people may be standing 15, 20 deep on each side," said Norris, who shot a creditable two-under 69.

"I think the best word to describe it all is the way Russell Knox put it, it's like playing with a mythical creature. It doesn't feel real."
