We have a few minutes to wait for the prize giving ceremony. Spectators have been allowed on to the 18th fairway and are being gently edged forwards. A wall of red-clad marshals between them and the Barry Burn that guards the green.

    Molinari wins The Open

I bet Francesco Molinari just can't wait to get his hands on the Claret Jug now, the first Italian to do so. And with that victory, he breaks the American dominance in recent majors...

It is fantastic. Francesco Molinari’s ball striking has been at the level for wining majors, but his putting has not. He has now found a way of getting the ball in the hole.

What an amazing moment. There was a huge crowd here on the putting green watching Molinari.

He was putting, laughing and smiling and then the cameras all came over.

They announced he was champion and Molinari turned and hugged his caddie. They were delighted and he was ecstatically happy.

So no final hole meltdown and no play-off, after three on the trot to decide The Open winner at Carnoustie. Francesco Molinari ends the US major winning streak and gives European golf a huge filip with the Ryder Cup a couple of months away

How do you feel, Francesco Molinari?

He's paces around, hugs his caddie, and then returns to the scorer's cabin to await Jordan Spieth and Xander Schauffele as they finish off their rounds.

Head in hands, is that a little tear of joy from The Open champion?

    Here we go...

This to take it to a play-off from 136 yards for Xander Schauffele, down breeze. This needs to drop.

It's high into the Carnoustie sky. "Get in!" shouts one spectator, but it pulls up short...

Francesco Molinari is still rolling putts in on the practice green. He's done that all day and isn't going to stop now.

That bogey for Xander Schauffele was greeted with a slight cheer in the stands around the 18th after it was recorded on the giant yellow scoreboards

"Oh, come on, just give me one," says Jordan Spieth as his miscues off the 18th tee.

He won't be defending his Open title.

Xander Schauffele needs an eagle at the last... that's happened just once this week.

He whips his tee shot down the fairway. Improbable, if not impossible.

And with that miss Molinari is up out of his seat. He has gone to the putting green to hit some balls.

    The Italian is almost there.

Schauffele must make eagle to take this into a play-off.
