Now here is our co-leader Francesco Molinari... Birdie here and he will take the outright lead and wipe out the chances of Rose, McIlroy and Woods.

Simply sensational! He drops it to just a couple of feet. Is that the shot that wins it?

Francesco Molinari has played the round of his life and it may well win him the Open in 2018.

  2. Schauffele misses birdie puttpublished at 18:29 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

    J Spieth -5, X Schauffele -7 (16)

Plenty scrambling to see the Xander Schauffele and Jordan Spieth group now - the former has an eight-footer down the hill for the outright lead at The Open.

It's trickling hole-bound, on it's way.... he's just missed it.

Spieth left his tee shot short, couples his second up towards the pin and he taps in for par.

Tiger to play first on 18...

Remember he needs a birdie at least.

Shot! Onto the green and it skips to six or seven feet.

Uh oh. Kevin Chappell, one of the men a shot back, has gone way right as he goes for the green on 17. Members of the crowd scurry towards a bush. I must admit I didn't see where the ball landed.

Forever to be remembered for Jean Van de Velde's triple-bogey seven on the 72nd hole in 1999, when a six or better would have given the Frenchman the title. Van de Velde got away with a pushed drive but eventually saw his hopes sink in the Barry Burn which runs in front of the green.

    Uh oh. That's not on.

A member of the crowd shouts out as Woods strikes the ball on the tee.

"What are you doing," Woods shouts at the chap in question. Boos from the rest of the crowd in the direction of their fellow spectator.

Thankfully, Tiger's ball ends up in decent shape but he will not be a happy man.

It is a lovely mix up the leaderboard. It is a packed leaderboard, but Francesco Molinari needs a three down 18 to give himself a chance.

A big intake of breath but Molinari clears the bunker down the right on 18. It'll only be a wedge for the Italian to the green.

  9. Birdie chance for Schauffelepublished at 18:21 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

    J Spieth -5, X Schauffele -7 (15)

What a shot from Xander Schauffele at the par-three 16th. Almost a look of disbelief on his face as he tees up a very getable birdie putt.

Jordan Spieth is chattering away in a frustrated manner after bringing his tee shot in short.

So now Francesco Molinari and Tiger Woods head to the final hole.

Tiger Woods must make birdie to give himself a chance and draw level in the clubhouse with Rose and McIlroy.

If Molinari makes par he will take the clubhouse lead on seven under and McIlroy and Rose will be out of it.

It is so impressive with what Francesco Molinari has done. His swing is consistent, his ball striking is good, and with the improvements he has made with his putting, he is a confident man.

  14. Pars for Molinari & Woodspublished at 18:18 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

    T Woods -5, F Molinari -7 (17)

Almost a bit of magic from Tiger. From off the front of the green he chips and nearly sees it rattle in the cup.

    Over to Francesco...

He comes within a whisker too. Molinari has a wry smile but surely must be buzzing inside. He still has the co-lead.

  15. WATCH: McIlroy's shot of the daypublished at 18:17 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

McIlroy has just joined Justin Rose in the clubhouse on six-under par. This eagle putt at 14 gives him a chance to get his hands on that Claret Jug for a second time.

  16. Bogey for Spiethpublished at 18:16 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

    J Spieth -5, X Schauffele -7 (15)

Xander Schauffele opts for his putter from the bottom of the bank, and skittles it right up towards the flag to give himself a good chance of saving par.

Jordan Spieth needs this to stay one off the lead. Eight feet out. No! He rolls it wide.

The defending champion looks furious. He drops two back.

Schauffele tucks away for par. Good save.

Thousands have opted to watch the drama unfold on the big screen to the left of the first fairway, rather than try squeeze into the incredible arena that is the 16th, 17th and 18th holds.

A big sigh from Tiger Woods. He has let this one slip. Another poor shot on 17 and he is running out of time. From the middle of the fairway he leaves the ball front left of the green with the pin back right.

Molinari meanwhile finds the correct area of the green and the fans hum in appreciation. He'll have a chance for a birdie to regain the outright lead in a sec.

  19. 'I don't think it's quite enough'published at 18:12 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

    J Rose -6 (F)

    Ged Scott
    BBC Sport at Carnoustie

Justin Rose was happy to admit that the 18th at Carnoustie is right up there with Royal Birkdale as his favourite Open hole.

“Well, it’s got to be after birdieing it all four days,” he said. “I felt quite emotional walking down 18," he said.

“Especially when I nearly holed it, like I did 20 years ago.

“I still don’t think it’s going to be quite enough, but it’s made it a memorable week whatever happens.”

The Schauffele shuffle... a little wiggle from the American before he attacks his approach. And he's definitely not happy, a few expletives as he overcooks and watches it scurry off the back of the green and down the bank.

Jordan Spieth gets the nod from a marshal to change his ball. Taken a chunk out of it? "Spin!" he tells it. And it does, finishing pin-high on the good stuff.
