    Holmes -9 (13)

    BBC Radio 5 Live presenter

JB Holmes had brain surgery in 2011. He had a brain tumour removed. Not only did he have one, he had to have a second surgery because the titanium they placed in his brain first time round he was allergic to.

He said: "Everything went well. I still have the piece of skull they removed in my closet at home in Orlando."

  2. ‘I enjoy the challenge’published at 13:04 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

TV, radio, now to speak to the written press for Tommy Fleetwood - this is what happens when you’re the clubhouse leader at The Open.

“I felt like I was a lot more stress-free. I made two or three good par-saves but I enjoy the challenge,” he said.

“It seemed like a much more scoreable morning but the course doesn’t allow for many birdies so you have to be patient.

“My major performances haven’t been as good as the previous year. It’s been a quieter year, but with the potential to be great - I’ve been up there two or three times on the PGA Tour and not won.

“Media-wise I’m under the radar but out there I feel like I have so much support.”

  3. Spieth with a birdie shot on 18published at 13:04 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Spieth -5 (17)

Jordan Spieth coming down the last. He has found the fairway, which has proved elusive in the previous few holes.

He hangs up a superb approach. That is within 10 feet. A birdie chance to finish...

  4. Rose on four underpublished at 13:02 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Rose -4 (11)

Justin Rose is coming under the radar like a stealth bomber.

The Englishman, who finished fourth as a 17-year-old amateur at Royal Birkdale in 1998 and shared second at Carnoustie 12 months ago, has netted birdies at seven and nine.

At four under, he is in a share of ninth and definitely in contact at three shots behind the leaders.

Tommy can’t relax just yet. There are media duties to attend to, including speaking to our very own BBC Radio 5 Live...

  6. Woods birdies the 10thpublished at 12:59 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Woods +5 (10)

    Here we go.

The comeback is on for Tiger Woods on the back nine!

The projected cut is +1, so Woods just needs to lose four more shots over the next eight holes.

    Easy…

  7. Back-to-back birdies for Holmespublished at 12:57 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Holmes -9 (13)

    Well, well, well.

JB Holmes extends his lead by another shot as he curls a 20ft putt in from left to right on the 13th.

He had a little blip with a bogey on the ninth but is on it on the back nine and now leads by two. Elementary.

  8. Postpublished at 12:55 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Mickelson +5, Lowry -4, Grace -1

Phil Mickelson needs to trim off about four shots if he's going to make the cut. It's not and ideal tee shot, as his effort goes into the light rough.

Shane Lowry's is much nice, straight down the middle.

  9. Koepka home at five underpublished at 12:55 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Koepka -5 (F)

Brooks Koepka cosies his birdie putt up to within two feet. That'll do.

He taps in. Mutual peak grips and cap tweaks between him and playing partners Lous Oosthuizen and Shubhankar Sharma, both level par.

Koepka will sit back in the pavilion and watch the others battle Portrush and the weather.

This is the current prediction for precipitation in the PM.

  10. The big Phil detoxpublished at 12:53 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Mickelson +5 (12:53 BST)

So Phil Mickelson is five over and a few commentators questioned if he went too hard on a detox, leaving him weakened for the tournament.

In an Instagram video this week, 'Phil The Thrill' opened up on losing 15lbs and how he hadn't been feeling good.

Not bad seats in the 18th grandstand at the minute, with fan favourite Tommy Fleetwood followed by world number one Brooks Koepka - although there are still a few spares.

There’s a shuffling of feet in and out after Koepka finishes as fans dive out for lunch or in for a look at Jordan Spieth coming through.

  12. Lowry ready to gopublished at 12:52 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Mickelson +5, Lowry -4, Grace -1

It was a superb day for Ireland's Shane Lowry yesterday, but the leaders have been setting a high standard today.

The 32-year-old, who has never won a major, is on the first tee now with Phil Mickelson and Branden Grace.

This was taken before Tommy darted into top spot, but it’s been a great day for the scorer who got to follow a trio that also included Justin Thomas and Thorbjorn Olesen during their second round.

He’s now heading to catch Shane Lowry on his afternoon off...

That elusive red number eight proved just out of reach for Fleetwood today, but he might just snag it on Saturday.

  14. Birdie for Holmespublished at 12:48 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Holmes -8 (12)

It’s been a painful few holes for JB Holmes – his putts are coming up short again and again.

The same happens with his eagle attempt, but the American still taps in for birdie to take the solo lead again.

  15. Rugby boys backing McIlroypublished at 12:46 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

Rory McIlroy tees off at 15:10 BST with a tough job to even make the cut after an eyesore eight-over round on the opening day.

As former Ireland wing Luke Fitzgerald points out at least the ball went further than the club off every tee yesterday...

  16. Koepka coming up the lastpublished at 12:43 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Koepka -5 (17)

Brooks Koepka's second on 18 is a decent little dig.

He will have a 20-foot riddle to read for a birdie on the last.

  17. Postpublished at 12:41 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Holmes -7 (11)

Ok… what can JB Holmes do now?

He gets an iron out to cover the distance to the 12th hole and it does the job nicely.

This will be an eagle chance to take the lead back from that pesky Fleetwood.

    BBC Sport at Royal Portrush

Now there’s a Royal Portrush roar!

Tommy Fleetwood was cheered on to the 18th green and when he rolled in for a round-closing birdie the hollers reverberated around the grandstand. Finally a smile from the Southport slinger, as he whips off his hat and shakes hands with Thorbjorn Olesen.

A job well done for the world number 20, and an afternoon to relax before the weekend.

  19. Fleetwood ties lead at seven underpublished at 12:39 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Fleetwood -7 (E)

    There she blows!

Tommy Fleetwood's putt zeroes on the pipe and slips down as smooth as a Friday evening cool one straight from the fridge.

The Englishman is tied for the lead with American JB Holmes. With all sorts of wet and wild weather forecast for later today, he is going to take some shifting today.

  20. Par saverpublished at 12:38 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Spieth -5 (16)

Like so many before him today, Jordan Spieth is slightly short and right on Calamity Corner. He's not as right as Tommy Fleetwood was, or Tyrrell Hatton was.

Light rough and a decent lie for the American. He chips up to three feet. A par is a good score on the 16th.
