Lee Westwood is more dialed in than your local council hotline when the bins aren't collected.

He drained a monster on the 16th and now from the fringe of the 17th he trickles one home, dropping it in the left edge of the cup having judged the break to perfection.

One off the lead. Surely not?

  2. Garcia back to three underpublished at 14:17 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Garcia -3 (3)

    Sergi-oh no!

A bogey on three puts the Spaniard back to level par for the day and three under overall.

JB Holmes and Shane Lowry are making the pace, five shots further up the road.

    Lowry -8 (5)

Shane Lowry has got hordes of people watching him and rightly so. This is a golf masterclass.

His tee shot on the par-three sixth sets him up nicely for an attempt at a ridiculous fifth birdie of the day.

  4. McIlroy to tee off at 15:10 BSTpublished at 14:10 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

The first glimpse of Rory McIlroy on the driving range.

The projected cut is one over. He starts his second round seven shots adrift of that at eight over.

I think he can safely start making alternative weekend plans.

He is playing alongside Gary Woodland and Paul Casey. They are due on the first tee at 15:10 BST.

  5. Clarke to one overpublished at 14:06 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Clarke +1 (9)

Darren Clarke's swept-back silver-fox look is not cutting the mustard around the turn,

The Northern Irishman has dropped a shot on eight and nine to creep out to one over.

  6. Four birdies from fivepublished at 14:06 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Lowry -8 (5)

Shane Lowry is more than on Holmes' tail - he's right on top of him.

What did he have for breakfast?! Want some.

He comes so close to a chip in for eagle on the fifth, but settles for just his fourth birdie of the day. Tied for the lead.

    Holmes -8 (17)

A slightly lacklustre second shot leaves JB Holmes with too much to do for a birdie on the 17th, but he maintains his one-shot lead with a par.

He’s got Shane Lowry on his tail, though.

    Woods +4 (14)

Another birdie putt squeaks past the side of the hole for Tiger Woods on the 14th.

The projected cut of +1 gets further away with every hole.

Here's the shot tracker for the putt Lee Westwood just hit to move to six under. He deserves more than a birdie.

The par-three 16th waits for his ball from way off the green. It crosses borders, needs clearance from air traffic control and breaks into the cup. A monster, a dragon, the Godzilla of putting.

Westy moves within a couple of blows.

  10. Simpson drops shot at twopublished at 14:00 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Simpson -2 (2)

Webb Simpson sustained a dent to the scorecard on the second. A bogey six leaves him at two under. There are 22 players better placed than the American.

  11. Waring raring to gopublished at 13:58 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Waring +4 (15:43)

England's Paul Waring was supposed to be part of the BBC Radio 5 Live team this week, but then he went and qualified for The Open.

Here's a little insight into his preparations for each round: "I'll start by getting some food and then begin stretching. There's always a good selection of food but a severe lack of alcohol so I'll have to find a pub later.

"I start off with putting training aids and then move on to the range. I use an alignment stick to help make sure I'm turning properly. Then I work up and down the wedges and then into the driver."

And on his caddie, he added: "The biggest advantage is he knows when to shut up and when to make me laugh. He first caddied for me round this course in 2012, he lasted four weeks and then I sacked him for a few years but now he's back."

    Lowry -7 (4)

Wow. Shane Lowry hits a monster tee shot on the fifth and makes it onto the green.

Annoyingly, it bounces off to the left but he could still get in for a birdie on the par four.

  13. Solid start for Europe team-matespublished at 13:54 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Garcia -4 (2) Noren -3 (3)

Sergio Garcia, whose best Open finish was second in 2007, pars the second.

Sweden's Alex Noren, who won two of his three matches as Garcia's team-mate in Europe's Ryder Cup win in September, has opened with three pars.

    David Duval has arrived.

He'll hope for a better day than yesterday and surely he'll get one.

The American is bottom of the pile after a FOURTEEN on the seventh yesterday.

He tees off at 14:48 BST.

    Respect John Rahm, respect bro.

That double bogey on the par-five second would have seen many a man off. Not you, not on this day, you unshakable force you.

Again you show me your grit, holing out a knee-knocker from four feet to birdie 12 and hit four under.

You're four back Rambo. Fight this course, fight this field, you don't shake, they do.

After a trip into the rough, Shane Lowry ends up missing out on a fourth birdie in a row by centimetres.

    A very impressive par.

Justin Rose is compiling a fine, fine round. Another birdie, this time on 14, takes him to six under.

He's hit 73% of fairways, the average across the field is 59%. He's also hit 79% of greens in regulation, with the field average at 71%.

Four under for his round and with clear momentum.

    Lowry -7 (3)

It look like Shane Lowry is discussing with his caddie going for the green from this rough with his second shot.

And those discussions soon turn to big smiles as he lands the ball on the back and it turns back round towards the hole on the par-four fourth.

    Woods +4 (13)

Tiger does all his usual putting preparations before a birdie attempt on the 13th, prowling around to look at the hole from every angle.

It doesn't do him any good, though, as his effort curls around the back of the hole. Another tap in for par.
