Cheers greet RMac around the 18th green as if he's just about to miss out on his second Open after a brave fight.

    Can he deliver a miracle?

  2. McIlroy's hopes over?published at 20:04 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    McIlroy +2 (17)

It's a six iron and about 200 yards.

The direction is OK, but the wind takes the ball left of the flag where an unforgiving gradient sucks it down.

Time to see how good your chipping is Rory.

It will need to be something pretty special from here, sadly.

What a cocktail of an atmosphere - excitement, nerves, anticipation. Throw in the fading light and this feels like a real stormy showdown.

Rory McIlroy at his home Open, the fans desperate to see him make the cut. It’s tense.

467 yards on the par four 18th.

McIlroy opts from an iron. Safely on the fairway.

The crowd hold their breath - although we've got a few minutes until he gets to the green.

    Let it out.

Defending champion Francesco Molinari should make the cut.

He just misses out on a birdie on the 18th, but taps in for par to finish on one over.

If looks could kill... as Rory McIlroy was lining up that putt a mobile phone went off in the crowd. Twice. Classic ring tone n all... the fans nearby did their own policing by all shooting the culprit a telling glance.

The atmosphere is like it's Sunday evening and Rory is coming down the 18th to win The Open - not to make the cut.

Paul Casey's 15-footer looks set to drop - it decides to stop at the doorstep.

    Can you do better Rory?

Oh noooo... it swings left at the point he wishes it didn't.

    One more chance for McIlroy.

    What an approach!

He lands this on the plate - about 12 feet folks?

It's not now or never because he has the 18th, but it would ease the tension.

Remember it's one over to make the cut.

Yikes. Amid the McIlroy mayhem, the spectators on the 17th wince at the sight of Gary Woodland wrapping his club through some long, thick, wet rough and almost pirouetting away as it nearly rips the iron from his grasp.

It's not the best lie, to be fair, for Rory McIlroy.

Lay up? Or does the former champ go for broke?

Eye of the tiger? Or eye of the...er...cat?

  15. Dogged Duval winning fans overpublished at 19:49 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Duval +27 (17)

    Alistair Bruce-Ball
BBC Radio 5 live commentator at Royal Portrush

David Duval had a nightmare yesterday but has had a decent round today. His pitched shot on the 17th was one of the best I've seen this week. It was a proper crafted links shot.

He's a former Open champion and I think the fans appreciate the fact that he's sticking at it despite the embarrassing score yesterday.

  16. 'I've fed off the support'published at 19:46 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    McDowell +1 (F)

Portrush's own Graeme McDowell should make the cut. He said:

"I hit it pretty solid. I had one eye on the board, it said +1 [for the cut].

"I hit the reset button really well yesterday afternoon, played solidly and slipped in for the weekend so we should have some fun.

"The support has been hugely positive. I've tried to use it and feed off them, I can't wait to try and get out there in the morning.

"I'm really proud of Shane Lowry and the way he's played - I'd love to see him get it done."

    "Hmmm..."

No doubt the reaction of those at the 17th who watched Rory McIlroy's drive from the tee go down the right - tough to see what the lie is like.

His playing partners Paul Casey and Gary Woodland also had 'mares.

    What next Rory?

Every player who drops to one over makes it more likely that that is where the cut will fall.
