    There was a groan as Rory McIlroy’s par-saving attempt failed to drop at 13 but it quickly turned to cheers and words of encouragement.

    This crowd really want to see the Northern Irishman make the weekend.

    Rory almost drops to knees. The eagle chance stayed up despite the whole of Portrush willing it in - but that’s a third birdie in a row. Those who braved the rain earlier to stick around and watch are being rewarded for their loyalty.
