Some delighted youngsters get a high five as Rory makes his way through the ropes to the 17th tee. This could turn out to be a day they remember for a long, long time. Acknowledgement from their hero. They’re beaming. Now for McIlroy to finish the job...

    McIlroy +2 (16)

    Oh my life!

A roar greets Rory McIlroy who sinks a 10 footer to move to two over.

    Believe Portrush! Believe!

If he picks up one more shot he'll be playing at the weekend.

Rory wipes a bead of sweat from beneath his cap, bows his head to the turf and glances back towards the pin. This feels like a major Sunday rather than a man chasing the cut...

Huge result for England's Callum Shinkwin on the 12th.

It's not such good news for Rory McIlroy, though. The more people who go under +1, the less likely that the cut will be at +2.

I picked up a copy of this week’s Coleraine Chronicle earlier and its lead story is local lad Graeme McDowell saying he’ll visit every pub in the region if he wins The Open - now that’s a lot of drinking from the Claret Jug to be done!

    McIlroy +3 (15)

    Return of the Mac?

When you broke my heart? Or pump up the world?

He's on the 16th tee and smacks his five iron to....within a few feet of the pin.

In a nutshell, he needs to sink this.

The last thing you want at Calamity Corner is a long wait at the tee box while the group in front clear the green, looking down at that steep drop off on the right side. Especially when you’re on a birdie hunt.

  13. First major weekend?published at 19:27 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Hebert +1 (12)

Frenchman Benjamin Hebert has never made the cut at a major before.

He’s just holed a huge birdie putt on the 12th to go to one over, where the projected cut currently is.

    Exciting times.

  14. McIlroy makes par at 15published at 19:26 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    McIlroy +3 (15)

Rory McIlroy splashes out and pokes in a short-range putt for par.

Tick-tock. Time running out. Three holes to go and two shots to make up if he is to make the cut.

  15. McDowell set to make cutpublished at 19:20 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    McDowell +1 (F)

Portrush local Graeme McDowell gets plenty of applause as he makes his way to the 18th green.

The Northern Irishman finished with a triple bogey here yesterday, but there will be none of that today.

McDowell's birdie putt curls round to the right and he taps in for par. He should still be here tomorrow.

  16. McIlroy in the sand at 15published at 19:19 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    McIlroy +3 (14)

Just as Alex promises, it has got distinctly interesting for Rory McIlroy at 15.

His second shot has hopped into a greenside bunker.

This is not going to his birdie chance. This is gong to be a salvage operation.

This is where it gets interesting... the lumpy, bumpy 15th; the potential round-wrecker of a 16th - continue that birdie form through here and Rory McIlroy will almost be able to taste the weekend.

  18. McIlroy birdies the seventh as he fights backpublished at 19:14 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    And another one.

Jim Furyk is quietly going about his business just behind McIlroy and co.
