It is just the most amazing scene. There is a mass of humanity as everyone clambers to see Shane Lowry finish what could be a record equaling 62.

    Fleetwood -12 (18) Westwood -8 (18)

Tommy Fleetwood taps in for his 66. A brilliant round but he looks a tad down, that may well be the Lowry effect.

Lee Westwood is in the cup for a 71 and ends on eight under.

So Fleetwood is four off the pace and right now, he looks like the only man who can threaten big Shane.

    Lowry -16 (17)

Just to mark your card - and Shane's - a birdie on 18 would give him a 62.

There has only ever been one 62 in any major in history - Branden Grace in 2017 at The Open.

That's how good this is. He has absolutely clattered this course to pieces today.

It's worth adding that when Grace fired a 62 it was an eight-under par round given Royal Birkdale's par was 70. Shane could produce nine under here.

Shane Lowry was welcomed on to the 17th green like a rockstar. Chants of “ole, ole, ole” from the boisterous home fans. They sense something special is in the making here.

He’s cheered off to the 18th tee with pats on the back and high fives after making massive eighth birdie of the day to increase that lead even further. Dreamy.

    Lowry -16 (17)

Shane Lowry is playing a different game.

    Smashes one down the 17th.

Chips, let's his ball roll sweetly to within five feet.

    Converts.

    Leads by four.

    One hand on the jug.

What a sparring match this is between Fleetwood and Lowry. The Royal Portrush punters are loving every blow.

Lowry lands a birdie-birdie combo at 15 and 16, as Tommy’s jab at 17 slides by to hand the Irishman a solid lead.

Still a long way to go until that knockout punch is delivered, mind...

  12. An incredible noisepublished at 19:30 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Alistair Bruce-Ball

That is quite an incredible noise after Lowry pops in that putt for birdie. We must be a good 400 yards away from the 16th but that noise has come thundering down the hill to where we are on the 17th. The Irish fans are absolutely loving it.

    Lowry -15 (16) Fleetwood -12 (17)

What a round from Shane Lowry - seven birdies. He looks set to break the record for this newest version of the Royal Portrush course.

Rory McIlroy had the record on this course when he fired a 61 at the age of 16 but two new holes mean Lowry is seeking to set the mark on this drag.

He tees off on 17 and it's sublime, up the middle. Tommy Fleetwood missed his birdie putt on 17 and so the lead is still three.

  15. Lowry clear...published at 19:25 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Lowry -15 (16) Fleetwood -12 (16) Westwood -8 (16)

Lee Westwood is grinding. It's not been his day despite clear effort. He hacks out of rough on 17 and will have a birdie chance, as will Tommy Fleetwood after a deft chip. You kind of think Fleetwood may need it given how Shane Lowry is playing.

Speaking of Lowry, big moment on 16, 12ft, birdie putt......IN. BIG. THREE CLEAR!

  16. Koepka finishes with a birdiepublished at 19:24 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Rose -9 (68), Koepka -9 (67)

Brooks Koepka is not done yet in this tournament. He drains his putt to finish birdie-birdie and wanders off to sign for a four-under-par 67. Just imagine if his putter had been working all round! He's left some shots out there today.

Justin Rose escapes with a par. An excellent up and down from a deep hollow. It's a 68 for the Englishman. And both players are locked together and if JB Holmes drops another shot in his closing three holes, then they will be in the penultimate group tomorrow...

Shall we turn out the lights?

Shane Lowry is edging to becoming the champion golfer.

He sinks his birdie putt on 15 to lead by two and, full of adrenaline he steps on to the par-three 16th and draws a stunner into the green, the ball coming to rest 10ft from the pin.

A birdie putt awaits. If he gets three clear is it over? Tell us what you think at #bbcgolf.
