  5. Rory and Tiger to go?published at 18:34 British Summer Time 18 July 2019

Now, I know the golf purists are always keen to point out there are more players in this major than Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, but the prospect of losing both before the weekend isn’t the dream for fans at Royal Portrush.

Rory drew a massive crowd earlier and Tiger’s following is at least as big this evening.

They may not be the only golfers out there, but they’re certainly the most intriguing for spectators.

    Woods +6 (12)

Tiger Woods has a birdie chance but it's really not his day to day. He misses and settles for another par.

That's still not bad after bogeys on the ninth and 10th.

  7. Bogey for Rahmpublished at 18:33 British Summer Time 18 July 2019

    Rahm -4 (11)

Jon Rahm can't stay out front on his own for long.

The Spaniard chips onto the 11th green from the bottom of a big bank and his par putt swings right of the hole.

    Poulter +4 (F)

Ian Poulter wasn't happy with his day at Royal Portrush.

"Extremely disappointed with today.." he wrote on Instagram.

"Had 36 strikes with the putter. 2 errant tee shots all adds up to 75. Need to fight hard tomorrow."

    Rahm -5 (10)

The 11th green is at the top of a massive bank.

If you'd pitched up there today, you would have seen several world leading golfers land their ball on the top, only for it to roll back down again.

And that's just what happens to leader Jon Rahm.

    Woods +6 (11)

Tiger Woods has looked uncomfortable all afternoon and it doesn't look like that's changing any time soon.

The 15-time major winner finds himself in the rough to the left of the 12th green.

    Wallace +2 (10)

    Alex Bysouth
    BBC Sport at Royal Portrush

Matt Wallace had his hand across his mouth a few moments ago like he’d seen a ghost. The Englishman is cutting a frustrated figure and struggling to get to grips with the Dunluce Links today. A little chip on to within a foot of the flag at 11 left him a little cheerier though. Cracking shot.

    Koepka -3 (F)

Even Brooks Koepka can't get a birdie on the 18th today. It's been treacherous.

He slots it in to finish with a par.

Rory McIlroy is so gifted but there's something in his make-up that isn't allowing him to fulfill his potential. Maybe a sports psychologist might help him.

Rory McIlroy is one of the best players in the world, he's had a bad day and let the occasion get to him, but tomorrow you'll see a totally different player.

  18. The day so farpublished at 18:11 British Summer Time 18 July 2019

We didn't have to wait long for a hole in one at this year's Open. Argentine Emiliano Grillo landed this one on the 13th.

It was not such a happy day for Rory McIlroy. Fans were hopeful about the Northern Irishman's chances on home soil, but he got off to a nightmare start.

And McIlroy had a bit of a nightmare end too to finish on +8.

England's Tommy Fleetwood enjoyed a better time of it, going -3 with a birdie on the 13th and making par on the next five holes to finish two off the lead.

    Fleetwood -3 (F)

Tommy Fleetwood’s long birdie attempt on the 18th lands just left. It’s still an impressive round though as he taps in for par. The Englishman hasn’t dropped a shot today.

    BBC Radio 5 Live

New Zealand's Ryan Fox on BBC Radio 5 Live after carding the lowest total for a back nine in Open history with 29 shots:

"It's pretty good considering how I started. I didn't know it at the time but it's nice to know it was a record. Sometimes you need something to click. I was getting frustrated over the first nine holes but then I changed my mind-set and saw a few starting to go in."
