  3. Controversy and fighting spirit in the afternoon

For a team on home soil - that morning had to hurt, and the afternoon did not start much better with Europe making the running but little by little, the red tide turned.

First on the board were Anna Nordqvist & Matilda Castren winning 4&3 over Lexi Thompson & Mina Harigae.

Nelly Korda & Ally Ewing of course clinched their controversial match 1UP, and it was a thrilling close with Lizette Salas and Jennifer Kupcho getting their point on the 18th.

It all came down to the last fourball, on the last hole with Georgia Hall's steady hand guiding the last point home to Europe along with super-rookie Leona Maguire.

  4. Europe set the pace in the morning

How did this day pan out?

Team Europe went out there with a mission and what a morning of Foursomes.

Anna Nordqvist & Madelene Castren, Mel Reid & Leona Maguire and Charley Hull & Emily Pedersen all finished 1UP with Ally Ewing & Megan Khang getting a half point on the board for USA against Celine Boutier & Georgia Hall.

  5. 'We've got a job to do and we try and win our points' - Hall

    1UP Hall & Maguire v Noh & Altomare (F)

Lets hear from the final round winners of today - Georgia Hall and Leona Maguire, who were talking to Sky Sports:

Georgia Hall: "We played a much better back nine and played key shots at crucial times."

Leona Maguire: "It’s a team effort. I am here to do my part for the team but was fortunate to have two great players as my partners.

"Hopefully that will give us some momenumt for tomorrow - it’s been great there and there has been more European suppor than I thought!"

Hall: "I’m quite good at ignoring the USA cheers. We’ve got a job to do and we try and win our points."

  6. Want to see the controversial moment from the fourballs?

Of course you do. This is Madelene Sagstrom picking up Nelly Korda's ball three seconds too early and therefore handing the US the 13th hole.

The US pair of Korda and Ally Ewing would halve the remaining five holes to win the match 1UP

  7. Final score after day one

Final score on day one at Solheim Cup
  8. Hall and Maguire clinch final point of the day

    1UP Hall & Maguire v Noh & Altomare (F)

There are two chances coming up for the USA to try and wrestle the half-point and while Yealimi Noh's birdie chance was an outside one at best, Brittany Altomare falls short of the cup and a mistake like that is not going to be passed up by Georgia Hall.

With two putts needed to win the match, Hall just sees the ball flirt past the cup, and Noh, with a rue smile, concedes and Europe and USA split the honours over the day as Hall and Maguire close out the day with a win.

  9. 'I knew what I had to do' - Salas

    Ciganda & Popov v Kupcho & Salas 1UP (F)

Another splash of red on the leaderboard was down to Lizette Salas. She spoke to Sky Sports:

Lizette Salas: "I knew what I had to do and I said I am ready for this moment, Jennifer [Kupcho] was rock solid all day and kept me in it. We worked well together and it was a team effort to get the job done today.

"We had to make some drastic adjustments and I still feel I need to make adjustments for the coming days but to get that point on the board – my legs were shaking and I’m just so proud of Jen and the whole team."

  10. Post update

    1UP Hall & Maguire v Noh & Altomare (17)

So, Europe need just a half on the 18th in this final fourball match left going today to take a huge lead into Sunday.

Georgia Hall is in the first cut of rough off the tee, her playing partner finds the sand.

Hall is first to play and lasers one in towards the pin. That's going to make it tough for the Americans, who need a birdie you fancy.

  11. Post update

    1UP Hall & Maguire v Noh & Altomare (17)

And then ... there were two (holes, that is!).

Have we mentioned how impressive Brittany Altomare has been today with her approach shots? She does it again to sit plumb on the green.

Leona Maguire has a slightly tougher job out of the fluffy stuff but a polite round of applause greets her shot.

How's this for an approach - Yealimi Noh is hitting from the other fairway and is perfectly placed and lies just ahead and up the slope from Georgia Hall's shot.

Nerves all round as birdie putts are missed but the hole is halved in fours and Europe are guaranteed at least another half point.

  12. 'I feel like I let my team down' - Sagstrom

An emotional Madelene Sagstrom and Nanna Koerstz Maden speak to Sky Sports about THAT decision:

Madelene Sagstrom: "I was not following the rules about leaving the ball for 10 seconds but I do believe in integrity and honour the game of golf. I put myself in that pool and I would never pick up a putt that had a chance to go in.

"I personally don’t agree with the decision of the ball being on the edge but I didn’t follow the 10 second rule, so it sucks right now because I feel like I let my team down."

How tough to finish that given your feelings on it?

MS: "It’s hard because we’re on American soil and (tears up) – I was going to wait for this in the locker room – It’s tough. We’re giving our all out there, we're fighting so hard and it’s just sad that the game is going to be on that position really. We put up a strong fight. We played great the both of us.

"The golf course is a beast! I’m happy that the girls are doing good. I’m going to go back and recoup and come out tomorrow."

Nanna Koerstz Madsen: "I really enjoyed it, it was amazing and Madelene was so supportive.

"The whole front nine I was overwhelmed with all the crowd and stuff.

"It was so tough – people startied yelling and it was just not fun for Madelene should not be in that position and golf should not come down to a putt that would have never gone in."

  14. Salas holes winning putt

    Ciganda & Popov v Kupcho & Salas 1UP (18)

Just a par for Jennifer Kupcho.

Lizette Salas up next. In it goes from five feet. Listen to the cheers. Carlota Ciganda will be kicking herself after the 17th.

    The leaderboard flashes red.

  15. Post update

    1UP Hall & Maguire v Noh & Altmore (15)

    Remember this foursome?

Well we catch up with them on the 15th and Georgia Hall walks in a birdie, and she and Leona Maguire regain the upper hand and sneak a lead - with three holes to play.

There is still plenty to play for, people.

  16. Post update

    Ciganda & Popov A/S Kupcho & Salas (17)

Stunning shot. Lizette Salas nails her approach into the 18th.

A birdie chance for the American, who piles the pressure on Carlota Ciganda. What can the Spaniard do?

She's a little heavy and flat with her iron shot running it past the back fringe. She might need to hole a pitch back on to halve the hole. Salas and Jennifer Kupcho both with birdie chances.

  17. US view on 'hang-gate'

Madsen & Sagstrom beaten 1UP by N Korda & Ewing

After the European rules infraction that saw the US win the 13th hole in the top match - a hole that would ultimately decide the fate of the match, here's what Nelly Korda, whose ball was picked up, had to say...

Nelly Korda: "That situation was unfortunate and you don't want to win a hole like that. We had no say in it. It was all up to the rules officials. It feels weird but they did the best they could with the situation. It took us about a hole to get our heads together.

Her playing partner Ally Ewing added: "We were both in anticipation to see if the ball would keep rolling. We hope {Europe] iunderstand we weren't trying to make the rules officials make a decision."

  18. 'A great day for both of us' - Nordqvist

    4&3 Nordqvist & Castren v Thompson & Harigae (F)

    Nordqvist and Castren

After their 4&3 victory, Anna Nordqvist and Matilda Castren said on Sky Sports:

Anna Nordqvist: "It’s been a great day for the both of us and [Matilda Castren] played great all day. I think we’re just happy to get the point in the board. They’re great competitors but I think we played great and we complemented each other pretty good."

Matilda Castren: "Getting the points was more than I could ask for and playing with Anna was pretty great. We both played great so the foursome worked pretty well. I managed to make a couple of birdies in the end – yeah it was good."

What will you take away from the first day?

AN: "I think how tough the golf course is playing the greens have firmed up a bit n the afternoon. Especially where some of the pins are – I don’t know how we’re supposed to get into any of the pins."
