    3UP M Reid & L Maguire v N Korda & A Ewing (8)

Nelly Korda, buoyed by the birdie putt on the eighth, hits a dreamy shot down the middle of the ninth fairway. Is the world number one settling into this contest?

Leona Maguire on the tee for Europe. She too splits the fairway.

Ally Ewing next up for the US, immediately looks away, unhappy with her approach. It's a little long and left but clings on to the back edge of the green, in the fringe rough.

Mel Reid is more accurate, into the guts of the green, the ball spinning back a little, leaving an uphill putt.

  2. USA turn in frontpublished at 14:31 British Summer Time 5 September 2021

    Hull & Pedersen v Thompson & Altomare 1UP (9)

After praising Thompson's putting so far it's only right to admit that was a stinker of an effort on nine - she's gunned it well by and nowhere near the line for that sort of speed.

Altomare has hardly putted today but she makes no mistake and the hole is halved as they make the turn with the USA one up.

  4. Korda wins eighthpublished at 14:24 British Summer Time 5 September 2021

    3UP M Reid & L Maguire v N Korda & A Ewing (8)

Leona Maguire is first to putt on the par-five eighth. Both teams are on the green in three.

The Irishwoman sets the ball off to the left and it stays out there.

Nelly Korda is up for the home side. About 15 feet. Never in doubt. One hole clawed back.

    2UP Nordqvist & Castren v Salas & Kupcho (7)

Anna Nordqvist has been rock solid already in this day and a half of play, and with a 15ft putt for a birdie, she extends the European lead once more, aided by Matilda Castren's stunning approach shot.

Once more they say to the US... anything you can do....

  6. All square at the turnpublished at 14:21 British Summer Time 5 September 2021

    Sagstrom & Hall A/S Kang & Ernst (9)

After a fast start from Europe, they've gone off the boil a bit and now it's nip and tuck after the American resurgence.

This is going to be an all-out battle down the back nine.

  7. USA get ahead after Hull slippublished at 14:20 British Summer Time 5 September 2021

    Hull & Pedersen v Thompson & Altomare 1UP (8)

Not a hole Charley Hull will want to remember, as she first tops a fairway wood from the short stuff and dunks it into the bunker, before then racing a putt right through the break and leaving Pedersen with a tricky return effort.

Pedersen can't clean it up and Altomare is left with the simple task of knocking it in to put the USA ahead.

    1UP Nordqvist & Castren v Salas & Kupcho (6)

Remember Lizette Salas' storming finish to save USA's blushes last night? Well, she is at it again, with a birdie putt to win the par-four sixth hole and to cut Europe's lead in this foursome.

The crowd, who were distinctly quiet earlier are beginning to find their voices.

    Expect things to get rowdy!

  9. Splash of red gonepublished at 14:09 British Summer Time 5 September 2021

    Sagstrom & Hall A/S Kang & Ernst (8)

That didn't last long...Sagstrom has an instant response for Europe in the top match and although they have two for the hole she slams in her putt from long range to win the hole.

That would have been an interesting return putt for Hall had it not thumped into the back of the cup.

  10. Korda makes another amateur errorpublished at 14:05 British Summer Time 5 September 2021

    4UP M Reid & L Maguire v N Korda & A Ewing (7)

Nelly Korda is playing like a rank amateur at the moment. The 23-year-old kicks the turf in disgust after chunking a chip on the par-four seventh.

Again, I'd have been grumpy with that one. She had about 60 yards, all uphill, to the green and the ball went no more than 15 yards.

Ally Ewing shows her how it should be done but even that pulls up 30 feet short. Korda cannot hole the putt and looks around for the Europeans to announce the concession.

  11. Postpublished at 14:01 British Summer Time 5 September 2021

    2UP A Nordqvist & M Castren v L Salas & J Kupcho (5)

Matilda Castren fires her drive into a fairway bunker down the sixth. Lizette Salas looks set to follow her into sand too as her ball hooks down the left.

Wow. Talk about a member's bounce. Salas' ball skips off the edge of the trap and heads right back into the middle of the fairway.

Anna Nordqvist has a hybrid in the sand, 180 yards to the green. Tugged it. "Fore left" is the cry but there are no spectators down where that ball has gone.

Jen Kupcho tightens the screw on this hole with a pin-seeker.

  12. First red on the boardpublished at 13:58 British Summer Time 5 September 2021

    Sagstrom & Hall v Kang & Ernst 1UP (7)

Danielle Kang celebrates and the USA have their first splash of red on the board with the top match going from two down to one up in the space of four holes.

    Momentum could be building....

  13. Lexi levels for USApublished at 13:57 British Summer Time 5 September 2021

    Hull & Pedersen A/S Thompson & Altomare (7)

Charley Hull does about as well as you could imagine with a fantastic putt across the seventh, one of thoseslow motionefforts that just keeps on rolling and rolling but pulls up right next to the hole.

It’s just a par though so leaves Thompson with five feet for the win and the way she’s been putting there’s no surprise when the ball dives into the hole and the Americans level the match.

  14. Postpublished at 13:53 British Summer Time 5 September 2021

    2UP A Nordqvist & M Castren v L Salas & J Kupcho (5)

A rare error from Anna Nordqvist on the short fifth, pulling her tee shot into a bunker and short-siding her playing partner.

Can Jen Kupcho take advantage? She's about a yard short of the green but the ball holds up rather than releasing forward.

Matilda Castren plays a 5/10 bunker shot, racing the ball 10 feet past.

Lizette Salas chips up to four feet.

Nordqvist makes amends with a sensational par saver. Just as well because Kupcho is not missing either.

  15. US strike backpublished at 13:51 British Summer Time 5 September 2021

    3UP M Reid & L Maguire v N Korda & A Ewing (6)

A rare error from Mel Reid, who misjudges her approach to the par-four sixth, and her ball tumbles backwards down a slope.

Leona Maguire flicks the ball on for four but Reid's putt is too strong and she concedes the hole.

  17. Who wins from here?published at 13:44 British Summer Time 5 September 2021

Europe have their largest lead after day one, but seven out of the eight matches went down 18 so it's been really close between these two teams.

With this lead though, will Europe build on the momentum and win the Solheim Cup?

Time for an early vote on who you think will win from here.

Thumbs up for Europe, thumbs down for USA.

    2UP A Nordqvist & M Castren v L Salas & J Kupcho (4)

Lizette Salas is on the fourth green with a 10-foot putt to win the hole and halve the deficit. The American is an aggressive player and she's way too hot with her putt there, racing it three feet past the hole and giving Jen Kupcho a tester for par.

Matilda Castren has already played a sensational chip to a couple of feet. The Americans want to see Anna Nordqvist hole this. She does. Hole halved.

  19. Postpublished at 13:42 British Summer Time 5 September 2021

    1UP Hull & Pedersen v Thompson & Altomare (6)

Pedersen whiffs a great chance to win the hole with a pretty ordinary effort from less than six feet, which has neither line or pace and doesn’t get anywhere near the hole.

Lexi Thompson again though is rock solid with the putter – mainly due to us questioning her on the opening hole – to halve the hole after they make Hull tap-in from under two feet.

  20. Reid & Maguire thumping N Korda & Ewingpublished at 13:37 British Summer Time 5 September 2021

    4UP M Reid & L Maguire v N Korda & A Ewing (5)

The European onslaught continues. And Leona Maguire deserves huge credit for this, firing her tee shot into about eight feet.

That put the pressure on Nelly Korda and while the world number one also found the short stuff, she left playing partner Ally Ewing a tricky putt across a slope, one she did not get to grips with.

Reid then stepped up and stroked in the birdie putt. Let's not get ahead of ourselves here, but this match is surely only going one way now?!
