    Koepka & Berger v Westwood & Fitzpatrick

Lee Westwood, one of the best drivers in the game, lives up to his billing and drills a cracking tee shot down the left-hand side of the fairway.

Daniel Berger responds. He's in the first cut, but that won't be much of an issue for Brooks Koepka.

Only one match left to go out!

    1UP Johnson & Morikawa v Casey & Hovland (1)

Hovland just twitching behind the ball on the second tee. That has found the rough on the left hand side and bounced under the ropes and onto the trampled pathway - should not be too bad of a lie for Paul Casey.

Advantage to the hosts on the second, who are down the middle of the fairway.

Viktor Hovland is unable to follow suit. He looked a bit quick through the ball and he's sent his drive into the rough down the left.

Well, that's not just golf is it? Etiquette goes out of the window at a Ryder Cup.

Garcia finding the sand on two is celebrated by the Americans on the first tee, with chuckles when they see Rahm's lie.

Then Morikawa and Spieth knocking in their birdie putts is met with the same gusto as a Green Bay Packers touchdown.

    1UP Johnson & Morikawa v Casey & Hovland (1)

Paul Casey fails to convert his birdie effort, but no such trouble for Collin Morikawa, who pours his putt straight into the heart of the cup for the first birdie of this year's Ryder Cup!

    1UP Thomas & Spieth v Rahm & Garcia (2)

Unlucky. Jon Rahm can't quite get hold of his pitch on stood awkwardly in one of the left bunkers, giving Sergio Garcia a putt from downtown.

Jordan Spieth's pitch on has left Justin Thomas with a bit of work to do mind. But he rolls in a nine footer to put the US ahead in the match.

    Johnson & Morikawa v Casey & Hovland

Viktor Hovland has 85 yards for his approach to the first, but he's landed it too far and looks a tad disappointed with the result. The Norwegian leaves Paul Casey 22 feet for a European birdie.

Now for Dustin Johnson, who thumps a wedge out of the thick rough. It's a great shot, leaving Collin Morikawa with a nine-footer, and a good chance for the hosts to open with a birdie in this second match.

  8. Changing windspublished at 13:32 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

There is barely a breath of wind out on the course this morning. It's a real turnaround from the previous two practice days when 30mph gusts have buffeted the course.

What wind there is has changed direction too. Earlier in the week it was coming in off the massive Lake Michigan, now it's heading off the land and will be pushing balls towards the water.

That's not great news for those teeing off on the par-three third and seventh holes, with their greens perched on the edge of the water.

    Johnson & Morikawa v Casey & Hovland

Paul Casey can't keep the smile off his face. Up the ball goes to a rippling of applause - and that's a great opening tee-shot.

Collin Morikawa - a rookie in name alone. A two-time major winner, and his first tee shot skips down the left and that's a tricky lie for Dustin Johnson for the second shot.

The old ones are the best. Paul Casey's practice swings are met by loud roars - so he stops on his backswing on the next time. Grins all round. And he's still grinning after those tee shots.

    Thomas & Spieth A/S Rahm & Garcia (1)

Over on the second Jordan Spieth zips his tee shot down the centre of the fairway. That leaves Justin Thomas with a three wood to try and reach the front of this 593-yard par five, which he just about succeeds in doing.

Jon Rahm leaves Sergio Garcia right off the tee and in the semi-rough. The 2017 Masters champion doesn't like the connection on that and no wonder.

Rahm's next shot is from the thick stuff next to the bunker.

    Johnson & Morikawa v Casey & Hovland

Right, the second match is on the tee and it's a formidable American pairing of Dustin Johnson and Collin Morikawa, ranked second and third in the world respectively.

But up first it's Paul Casey, who is introduced to a chorus of boos. The Englishman takes it in his stride, though, and has a bit of fun with the crowd before sending his drive down the right-hand side of the fairway, leaving Viktor Hovland a good angle to attack this pin position.

Next up is Open champion Morikawa, but he's down the left and that looks like an awkward lie for Johnson, just shy of the bunker.

To the left of the first tee, there is a big screen showing the action up ahead. When Justin Thomas' birdie putt stayed up there were gasps of shock.

"What the hell was that," asks one American fan.

    "Interesting," is a European thought.

Then it is back to the choreographed USA chants. Not much imagination to the singing, it has to be said.

Thomas & Spieth AS Rahm & Garcia (1)

If Justin Thomas can knock this in that Sergio Garcia chip will be in vain. But he can't.

The American didn't read that one at all and pushed it right. All square.

    Thomas & Spieth v Rahm & Garcia

Great shot. Jon Rahm clips a lovely shot out of the sand trap to the back fringe but Jordan Spieth knocks on to seven or eight feet.

Sergio's up next, running a wonderful chip back down towards the hole and seeing it slide past. I thought that was in for a second.

  16. 'These are the best days of their lives'published at 13:15 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

European captain Padraig Harrington looks like he is still soaking it all in as he approached by broadcasters at the side of the first tee.

Asked how he feels about the start of the Ryder Cup he tells Sky Sports: "They are ready to go. They are in a nice place. I am stoked. I am confident in my team. I have a strong balanced team of good ball strikers.

"[I told them] The basic go out an enjoy it albeit there was a bit more to it than that, these are the best days of their lives."

If Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth wanted to pick that ball up and place it anywhere on the fairway, that would be the spot!

Ouch. Sergio Garcia puts Jon Rahm in a world of early trouble as his ball drifts left into one of the 1,000 or so bunkers on this course.

Justin Thomas is in pole position, pinging his ball down the middle of the fairway on this par four.

  20. Hitting the opening tee shot like an 'out of body experience'published at 13:06 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

Apparently Justin Thomas is going to be teeing off for the US.

The American likened his opening shot at Le Golf National near Paris in 2018 to "a total out of body experience.

"I hit a 5-wood off the first tee and I don't put it on a tee when I do that. I just kind of put it on the deck.

"I've always said if I had to put it on a tee, I don't think I could have. I would have been too nervous, to where I would not have been able to get a ball on the tee."

Let's see how he goes here.
