Odd situation as Europe captain Padraig Harrington holds a news conference without saying who his pairs are tomorrow. They've not been released publicly, but he knows what they are and has submitted them.

Anyway, here's what the Irishman thought about today...

"No doubt it was a tough day. Clearly not what you wanted, 6-2," he says.

"There's obviously still 20 points to play for. We've only just played for about 25 percent at this stage. It isn't a good start, but there's still a lot to play for.

"My team played well today. You know, just a few times, the momentum, the odd putt didn't go in, and you need a bit of momentum."

    USA 6 Europe 2

It all started so well for Europe with Sergio Garcia and Jon Rahm taking down Team USA's top pairing of Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas in the opening match of the event.

That would be the one and only match Padraig Harrington's side would win all day though as Steve Stricker's home side produced some superb golf that the visitors simply had no answer for.

So, we can put that down as a very good day for Team USA – who with a 6-2 advantage have their largest day one lead they’ve ever had against Team Europe.

The last time they led by so many points was against Great Britain & Ireland before Europe even joined the Ryder Cup.

Steve Stricker got all 12 of his players out on the course, and 11 of them contributed with at least half a point – with surprisingly the only man to come back empty handed being Jordan Spieth.

It is a long way back for Padraig Harrington's side from here - of course Europe came from four points down in Medinah, but the frightening thought is that the gap could get wider tomorrow.

  8. A long walk doesn't spoil the golfpublished at 01:01 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

If anyone tries to tell you golf isn’t physically demanding then send them over to Whistling Straits.

It’s a long, undulating course with more ups and downs than Formby beach.

After walking 27 holes today - but not swinging a club, of course - I’ve done 21,144 steps which equates to 13.5km. As well as climbing the equivalent of 41 floors.

Good job these players, especially those like Viktor Hovland and Patrick Cantlay who have just finished their 36th holes of the day, are younger and fitter than me.

Although I'm sure they will still have to stick their feet in an ice bucket at the digs tonight.

  10. Heroic Hatton salvages half pointpublished at 00:46 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

There hasn't been much to shout about for Europe, but Tyrrell Hatton's birdie on the 18th to earn a half point for himself and Jon Rahm against Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler was stirring stuff.

Europe need a lot more putts to go in tomorrow, though...

  11. McIlroy suffers fourth Ryder Cup loss in a rowpublished at 00:45 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

    Rory McIlroyImage source, Getty Images

Rory McIlroy's Ryder Cup form must be a big worry for Padraig Harrington and it may be worth giving him a rest tomorrow morning as he's not looked anywhere near his best today.

He's played in 26 matches since making his debut at Celtic Manor in 2010 - playing the full five matches in the last four Ryder Cups.

McIlroy has just two wins in his last eight matches though, and he's suffered two crushing defeats today to make it four losses in a row, with three of them wide margin defeats.

He's one of Europe's leaders, but that form is a huge worry.

The moment that left JT’s putter he knew it didn’t have enough gas.

It wasn’t quite the raucous finish which the American fans wanted, but they’re certainly happy as they file out to the car parks.

Fleetwood and Hovland are all smiles too, the older Englishman warmly hugging the young Norwegian.

Patrick Cantlay, after playing 36 holes today, looks shattered as he takes a seat on the fringe of the 18th green.

Let's hear from Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland as they speak to Sky Sports:

Tommy Fleetwood: "It was a really good match. We both said walking down the last - we've given it everything. It was a pleasure to be involved in that match."

Viktor Hovland: "I would have lked to put some more points on the board but I don't think it's possible to have a more fun time with Tommy today.

"Hopefully we get a chance to set the record straight tomorrow."

Well, Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland have had a lot of fun out there but there'll be a sense of a match that got away from them as they had two chances to go three up and kill off the match, but missed the putts.

The Justin Thomas stepped up with an insane run of holes and almost stole the point from them. A half it is, but this could be a pairing we see again soon.

  18. Last match finishes all squarepublished at 00:31 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

    Thomas & Cantlay A/S Fleetwood & Hovland (F)

Hovland's putt is a lot more difficult than it looked as he has to come up and over a ridge, and it trickles away to well outside of gimme range - which is pretty small on the 18th green!

No matter as Fleetwood pops in his par putt and when Thomas comes up short with his birdie attempt he just knock in his own par putt for a halved match.

    And a 6-2 lead!

  19. Close!published at 00:26 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

    Thomas & Cantlay A/S Fleetwood & Hovland (17)

Wow! That was some effort out of the sand from Fleetwood and it scared the hole as it went by - that also scared the American crowd for a minute.

Cantlay's a wizard out of the sand as well - it never looked like going in but it's stone dead and that should be two fours. A three needed to win it...
