Just not happening for Ian Poulter or Rory McIlroy.

Having watched US debutant Patrick Cantlay spin his approach back towards the pin on the sixth, the Englishman goes for more of the same. Except his ball almost stops dead 20 feet or so from the hole.

That's a good 10 feet outside the American ball.

Xander Schauffele can't convert though and the Europeans halve the hole. Unbelievably that's the first hole they have not lost.

Daniel Berger is taking to the Ryder Cup like a duck to water.

Puts the pressure on Lee Westwood - throws it high and again - it will be a putting contest on the eighth.

Viktor Hovland to win the hole for Europe but that chance goes begging for a chance to win the eighth for Europe.

Collin Morikawa with just a couple of feet to tie the hole - and they maintain their advantage.

    1UP Johnson & Morikawa v Casey & Hovland (8)

Paul Casey sends a short iron into the stratosphere at the par-four eighth.

"Quite like it," he says as he watches it land just right of the pin. Great chance for a birdie!

The Americans, who had trouble off the tee, are short of the green in two and Dustin Johnson chips up to five feet.

Chance for Viktor Hovland, but his birdie putt slips past on the right! The Americans have gotten away with one there.

The crossover of the third and seventh tees - the front nine does a figure of eight on the southern point of the course - is a fantastic vantage point for the fans.

Those positioned early can watch those teeing off on the third and putting out on six.

Captains Harrington and Stricker were also loitering around here too earlier, marshalling their troops via headsets from a flyover walkway.

Xander Schuffele with a brilliant putt.

The pressure was on the Europeans and Rory McIlroy skirted past left of the cup.

They are five holes down - and you know with McIlroy - the shoulders slump when things are not going well.

  8. McIlroy & Poulter fall further backpublished at 15:07 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    5UP Cantlay & Schauffele v McIlroy & Poulter (5)

Is this the start of the McIlroy/Poulter fightback?

The Englishman flights a wonderful iron shot over the drink to around eight feet from the pin on eight.

Patrick Cantlay goes a tad conservative for the US rookies and isn't helped as his ball spins back to 30 feet. Xander Schauffele makes light of a that mind, rolling it in to a huge cheer.

All of a sudden Rory McIlroy's putt doesn't look anything like as inviting and he misses it left, shaking his head as he walks to retrieve his ball.

    FIVE down.

    1UP Koepka & Berger v Westwood & Fitzpatrick (7)

Matt Fitzpatrick is a little bold with his birdie try at the seventh and the Europeans aren't in for their par yet.

Here come Brooks Koepka's effort...it looks good, but agonisingly dies to the left. He can't believe it - that must have looked good.

Lee Westwood with a four-footer for par...makes it! The Americans keep their one-hole lead.

    Spieth & Thomas v Rahm & Garcia 2UP (8)

Look at that indentation in the green. Jordan Spieth take a bow.

The American lasers his approach in to six-eight feet. Big putt coming up for Justin Thomas with Europe's Sergio Garcia facing a 20 footer for birdie.

    1UP Koepka & Berger v Westwood & Fitzpatrick (6)

    Woah.

Daniel Berger's approach to the par-three seventh drifts to the right, but it gets a massively fortuitous kick and the Americans now have a great look at birdie from around 25 feet.

Europe will have a birdie attempt of their own, though.

    1UP Koepka & Berger v Westwood & Fitzpatrick (6)

Brooks Koepka shows his short game skills with a lovely chip to secure an American par at the par-four sixth.

That leaves the door ajar for Matt Fitzpatrick, who holes his 10-foot birdie putt! That's more like it.

Europe trail by one in the third match.

    1UP Johnson & Morikawa v Casey & Hovland (7)

And just as I was praising Viktor Hovland, the Norwegian is heavy-handed with his chip at the par-three seventh.

He leaves Paul Casey with a knee-knocker for par and the Englishman will be made to putt after Dustin Johnson fails to find the bottom of the cup with a 20-footer for birdie.

Over to Casey - and it catches the left lip but doesn't drop! That's an American win. A poor tee shot from Casey cost the Europeans there.

    Thomas & Spieth v Rahm & Garcia 2UP (8)

    Iain Carter
Golf commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

Jon Rahm to take the Europeans two-up and he did it again.

It was a brilliant display of putting from the world's best player - massive!

  16. Garcia & Rahm go two uppublished at 14:55 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    Spieth & Thomas v Rahm & Garcia 2UP (8)

Back-to-back holes for Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia, who nods with approval as the world number one sinks a 10 footer.

Has to be said Garcia's approach from a ridge in the rough was absolutely glorious.

This American pair looked so good in Paris three years ago, winning three of their four matches together but they're going to have to dig deep now.

Trailing behind the final group of players are about 60 people who allowed ‘inside the ropes’.

NBA star Steph Curry is one of those wandering around in the slipstream of Cantlay/Schauffele and Poulter/McIlroy. He’s walking with a guy who I’m told is a NFL player for local heroes the Green Bay Packers.

Curry is wearing a Team USA top. And a big grin given the score.

This is going to be all about determination for the two veterans of European Cup history - they have got work to do.

  19. Poulter & McIlroy trail by fourpublished at 14:51 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    4UP Cantlay & Schauffele v McIlroy & Poulter (4)

    Long. Way. Back.

Another horror hole for the European duo who end up with a bogey five after Rory McIlroy shanked his tee shot left and Ian Poulter's recovery bounced over the green.

  20. Postpublished at 14:51 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    Johnson & Morikawa A/S Casey & Hovland (6)

Collin Morikawa - easily one of the best iron players in the game - floats a lovely approach into the green at the par-three seventh.

Paul Casey tugs his, though, and misses the green.

Tough to pick a winner in this third one. Both teams are playing well and Viktor Hovland looks as comfortable as anyone out there.
