    2UP Koepka & Berger v Westwood & Fitzpatrick (5)

It's a birdie four at the fifth for the Americans and they immediately re-establish their two-hole cushion.

It's not looking great from a European perspective in the final two matches...

  2. Poulter & McIlroy three behindpublished at 14:46 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    3UP Cantlay & Schauffele v McIlroy & Poulter (3)

Bad to worse. Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele are putting Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter to the sword at present, with a birdie securing another hole.

The Ryder Cup website has a handy outcome probability tool on it and it's currently 84.1% in favour of the American pair winning this match.

Still Europe have won the fourth hole in all of the first three matches. McIlroy and Poulter could definitely do with staying on trend after a dismal start.

  3. Johnson & Morikawa level at the sixthpublished at 14:45 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    Johnson & Morikawa A/S Casey & Hovland (6)

Dustin Johnson pours his birdie putt in at the par-four sixth with Viktor Hovland having been unable to do the same for Europe.

    All tied up again.

    Thomas & Spieth v Rahm & Garcia 1UP (7)

    Iain Carter
Golf commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

It was the Europeans putting first on the par three. And Rahm knocked in from about 10 feet through his shadow.

That threws down the gauntlet to the Americans for a marginally shorter putt - well there you go!

Classic matchplay scenario. The Americans, after Justin Thomas' superb tee-shot, lose that hole. Rahm and Garcia go one up.

  5. Garcia & Rahm edge back in frontpublished at 14:39 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    Spieth & Thomas v Rahm & Garcia 1UP (7)

On to the iconic seventh hole which hugs Lake Michigan.

And what a shot that is from Justin Thomas. The American whips a four iron into the 221-yard par three and sees it come to a stop around seven feet from the pin.

Not to be outdone Sergio Garcia lands his tee shot a couple of feet from the hole before it trickles off to eight feet or so. Jon Rahm tidies that up to apply the pressure. Can Jordan Spieth respond.

    No. It slips past.

    Europe are back in front.

  6. Postpublished at 14:34 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    Johnson & Morikawa v Casey & Hovland 1UP (5)

Viktor Hovland has a great chance to double the European advantage on the fifth, but he can't make it and it's a half in par fives.

Europe retain their slender advantage through five holes.

At Whistling Straits you can see an American flag on every item of clothing you can possibly think of.

More stars and stripes on show than a dazzle of zebras turning up at the Met Gala.

Caps. Hoodies. Bobble hats. Trousers with stars on one leg and stripes on the other.

Bandanas. Socks. Dungarees. Onesies with huge pockets to stick a beer or three in.

Boiler suits. Bucket hats. Headbands with stars bobbling about on springs.

One bloke was wearing the Stars and Stripes as a cape over his suit. Oh, by the way, he was dressed as Abraham Lincoln with accompanying chin-curtain beard.

    Spieth & Thomas A/S Rahm & Garcia (6)

Sergio Garcia looks a bit perplexed having been asked to tap in a two footer on the sixth. The Ryder Cup's leading points scorer takes his time and then drops it in to halve the hole.

  9. Postpublished at 14:31 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    1UP Koepka & Berger v Westwood and Fitzpatrick (4)

It's been a rough start for Lee Westwood and Matt Fitzpatrick, but they halve the deficit with a steady par on the fourth.

Westwood then uncorks an absolute beauty down the fairway of the par-five fifth, so they'll be feeling a lot better about things than they were 15 minutes ago.

    2UP Koepka & Berger v Westwood & Fitzpatrick (3)

    Alistair Bruce-Ball
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

Trouble for Brooks Koepka - he's absolutely walloped it from the left by the banks of Lake Michigan, and into the rough on the right. Europe safely on the green in two.

  11. Poulter & McIlroy fall two behindpublished at 14:27 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    2UP Cantlay & Schauffele v McIlroy & Poulter (2)

That's not bad at all from Ian Poulter. The Postman delivers a lovely clip from the thick rough but then sees his playing partner Rory McIlory fail to knock in an eight footer to halve the hole.

It’s been a mixture of high-class and erratic golf so far

    2UP Koepka & Berger v Westwood & Fitzpatrick (3)

Lee Westwood finds the green with his approach to the fourth.

"If you're gonna make a noise on every shot with that tripod, go watch another match, would you?"

That's what Billy Foster, Matt Fitzpatrick's caddie who used to carry Westwood's bag, had to say to a cameraman who's clearly been irking him over the first few holes.

You just have to love the tension here.

    1UP Cantlay & Schauffele v McIlroy & Poulter (1)

Oh that's horrible from Rory McIlroy, playing out of the sand on the second.

He catches that thin albeit from a really awkward stance, to zip over the green onto the banking on the far side. Ian Poulter will have his work cut out from there.

Very few Europeans have been able to make the trip to Wisconsin, but this lot have been managing to create some noise in support of the visitors.

Chris Scott-Batey is an Englishman from Newcastle and has made the trip with his old uni mates.

"We're all friends from Nottingham University, where we met 25 years ago. We have always hooked up every Ryder Cup and had a golf trip ourselves," he tells BBC Sport.

"We put the kit on for Celtic Manor and since then we have always dressed up and sung songs. We've had a great reception from the Americans - they are so welcoming. You get one or two who give you a boo or a heckle, but generally it is great.

"This is the biggest minority we've had as European fans in the US, of course. But we've pencilled ourselves as the 'Guardians of the Cup' and we hope to help the boys take it home on Sunday."

    Iain Carter

It's a bogey in the books for the Spaniards and now it is Jordan Spieth with the first of two putts for the win.

    We're back to all square!

    1UP Cantlay & Schauffele v McIlroy & Poulter (1)

    Sarah Mulkerrins

What can Rory McIlroy do to settle down those nerves. This looks like a very good drive - he finds the fairway and then it just inches out into the first cut.

  17. Postpublished at 14:15 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    1UP Cantlay & Schauffele v McIlroy & Poulter (1)

Back on the first Ian Poulter and Rory McIlroy find themselves a hole down after the Northern Irish makes a hash of his approach.

Xander Schauffele lands his approach five feet from the pin and Patrick Cantlay rolls it in for the second birdie of the morning session at the opening hole.

  18. Postpublished at 14:15 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    2UP Koepka & Berger v Westwood & Fitzpatrick (3)

Brooks Koepka holes a lovely 20-footer for birdie - and Matt Fitzpatrick cannot follow him in.

This is already looking ominous for the Europeans. Koepka looks razor-sharp but the all-English pairing of Fitzpatrick and Lee Westwood have certainly shown a few nerves.

They're right up against it after three holes.

  19. Postpublished at 14:13 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    Johnson & Morikawa Casey & Hovland 1UP (4)

Viktor Hovland lags a 45-footer up to gimme range on the par-four forth.

That's a lovely putt and it puts the pressure on Collin Morikawa...but he pushes his putt and it slips past on the right.

Europe take the lead with a winning par! They've turned this one around.

Hovland's looking great out there. What a talent.

    Peter Scrivener
    BBC Sport at Whistling Straits

Now, we know there won't be many European fans in Wisconsin this week but the lack of merch to take home is pitiful.

These are the only things I could find in a supermarket-size store that was rammed full of all kinds of golfing stuff you need, and lots you don't - official USA boxer shorts anyone?

I was chatting to one of the many hundreds of cheerful volunteers on Thursday - he estimated he took $50,000 in sales in his four-hour shift on the tills, and he was one of 70 cashiers! You can do the maths on that one, but he said he'd heard they were taking $30m... a DAY...It's a far cry from those humble beginnings in Massachusetts in 1927.
