You guys thought I was lazing about in the sun, eh? You’ll be pleased to know clouds are moving in overhead.

The dull, grey sky feels symbolic for the Europeans.

Few spots of rain as we climb up the 10th tee, too.

  2. Cantlay extends lead over Lowrypublished at 20:29 British Summer Time 26 September 2021

    2UP Cantlay v Lowry (14)

You'd have thought Patrick Cantlay would be getting nervous with Shane Lowry breathing down his neck.

Not a bit of it. He nearly spins his ball back into the cup from 109 yards for an eagle on the 14th. With a birdie pretty much sorted he watches Lowry miss his 11 footer to halve the hole.

    Schauffele v McIlroy 3UP (15)

    Three up, three to play.

What can go wrong for Rory McIlroy from here? Just don't show him that missed putt again. A six footer from right to left to win the opening match slips past.

Still surely not long until he can get into cheerleader mode.

  4. DJ further in frontpublished at 20:27 British Summer Time 26 September 2021

    2UP Johnson v Casey (10)

A birde on 10 moves Johnson further ahead and this slice of Ryder Cup history looks to be on his way as he is staring down a fifth win out of five and become just the third player to win five points in the USA v Europe format.

Can you name the other two?

  5. Scheffler soaringpublished at 20:27 British Summer Time 26 September 2021

    4UP Scheffler v Rahm (13)

Jon Rahm has a face like thunder. He pulled one back at the last but now finds himself four holes adrift once more, failing to recover from a wayward tee shot after some shuffling in the crowd put him off, and the world number one now needs to win at least five of the final six holes.

    US fans

If you've clocked any of the television coverage, chances are you've seen this lot walking around Whistling Straits.

These are the American Vikings, who have been appointed as colourful cheerleaders by the PGA.

About 20 of these guys, all wearing Vikings horns and ice hockey-style tops, seem omnipresent.

Every morning they are congregated in the corner on the first tee grandstand, starting raucous chants and leading more-solemn versions of the American anthem.

Spotted them all over the course, too, and then they turned up on on our bus into the site yesterday.

So what's the outfit all about?

"We're all Minnesota Vikings fans so it started with the Vikings horns - that's our identity," one of them tells me.

"The Vikings are usually purple and gold. The PGA wanted us to turn them to American red, white and blue. So here we are."

  7. Thomas goes further aheadpublished at 20:24 British Summer Time 26 September 2021

    3UP Thomas v Hatton (8)

Even if Europe somehow overturn these early scores, four of the final six matches are currently flashing in American red. Justin Thomas is one of those, clipping in from just off the green and raising his club to the crowd in celebration.

  8. Postpublished at 20:24 British Summer Time 26 September 2021

    2UP Morikawa v Hovland (11)

Nervy moment here on 11 as Hovland has 15 feet to win the hole, but just races it three feet by in his eagerness to try and pull a hole back.

Luckily enough he converts the return putt to stay just the two down.

    Schauffele v McIlroy 3UP (14)

Rory McIlroy taking a free drop from behind a television tower on the 15th after seeing his tee shot veer away left.

Lots of fans snapping away on their camera phones as the Irishman spirals his ball towards the green.

Not quite a picture-perfect ending though for the Irishman, who sees his ball hug the thicker collar of grass on the rim of the dancefloor.

  10. Garcia reduces deficitpublished at 20:21 British Summer Time 26 September 2021

    2UP DeChambeau v Garcia (12)

One for us all to relate to at home. Bryson DeChambeau thuds his wedge into a clump of long grass and the ball pops all of half a yard forward. His third fails to find the hole from there, and with Sergio Garcia eyeing a birdie chance the American concedes the hole. One back for Europe.

  11. Spieth 2UP on Fleetwoodpublished at 20:20 British Summer Time 26 September 2021

    2up Spieth v Fleetwood (6)

Fleetwood is not walking around with the best body language it has to be said, his putt to save the hole on five is struck without any hint of positivity, and he quickly loses the next hole as well.

Spieth is 2UP in the blink of an eye.

  12. Garcia 'a little pep in his step'published at 20:20 British Summer Time 26 September 2021

    Iain Carter
Golf commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

Oh its brilliant from Sergio Garcia and it has spun back around about four and a half feet, What a tee shot that is - right up there for best shot.

A little pep in his step.

  13. Postpublished at 20:19 British Summer Time 26 September 2021

"This US side could dominate the Ryder Cup for a decade."

    3UP DeChambeau v Garcia (11)

Chance for Sergio Garcia at 12. Bryson DeChambeau watches his tee shot leap off the turf and down the bank behind the green, before Garcia anchors his down around eight feet from the flag.

    Finau A/S Poulter (8)

Another dash of blue being erased? Tony Finau tidies up from seven feet to win the eighth hole for the hosts.

  17. Postpublished at 20:15 British Summer Time 26 September 2021

    3UP DeChambeau v Garcia (11)

Bryson DeChambeau is holding his nerve, confidently thumping in putts as Sergio Garcia clings on and scrambles around him. Still three to the good for the US in this one.

  18. Rahm fumes at crowdpublished at 20:13 British Summer Time 26 September 2021

    Kat Downes
    Commentator on BBC 5 Live

Jon Rahm is speaking to the crowd because someone put him off - he let go of his club instantly, and he is fuming.

  19. Postpublished at 20:12 British Summer Time 26 September 2021

    3UP Scheffler v Rahm (12)

Jon Rahm is not impressed. His three wood comes flailing out of his grasp on the par-four 13th and the Spaniard beats his feat into an open palm. "Come on guys, we can hear when you move..."

To compound his misery, Scottie Scheffler nails his drive.

  20. McIlroy bounces backpublished at 20:11 British Summer Time 26 September 2021

    Schauffele v McIlroy 3UP (14)

What a matchplay moment. Rory McIlroy produces the goods on the 14th green, sinking a sumptuous 30-foot putt. He pumps his fist and shouts "come on" or words of that nature.

Xander Schauffele, pressure on, can't repeat the trick from 10 feet.

McIlroy is now three up with four to play in the top match. He is more than doing the job asked of him.
