    McIlroy -5, Schauffele -4, Morikawa +1 (17)

    Graeme Storm
Two-time European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 live

Rory's touch with the putter today has been fantastic all round the course today. Up and around the slope and the Road Hole bunker - perfectly judged from Rory.

  2. Casey picks up anotherpublished at 15:29 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Casey -4 (8)

Paul Casey birdies the par-three eighth to maintain his forward momentum.

The Englishman is faring as well as any of the afternoon starters so far.

  3. Good save from Schefflerpublished at 15:28 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Scheffler -3 (6)

Scheffler just gets a bit too excited on his long birdie putt and guns it beyond the hole, but he's got great touch, and even greater nerve over these par saves and sinks it to stay at three under.

It’s easy to get swept away with the Tiger hype when 90% of fans are cheering and hollering for the 15-time major winner, but this is an interesting trio - Matt Fitzpatrick, US Open champion, and Max Homa, Twitter king have their own bragging rights.

No sign of Tiger's edgy start dissipating just yet. After pulling his tee shot slightly left, Woods goes too big with his approach.

The ball bounces off the back of the green, out of sight of the television camera, only to reappear on the dancefloor.

Only the 55 feet between ball and hole...

  6. McIlroy saves par, Schauffele slips uppublished at 15:26 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    McIlroy -5, Morikawa +1, Schauffele -3 (17)

It's actually a pretty good effort from Schauffele, but he can't convert the par save and that dropped shot will hurt after a great drive.

McIlroy produced another seriously good chip and rolls in the par save - his short game has been razor sharp today.

Andrew Priestley: I was sitting in the grandstand behind the first green on Thursday morning at the Open in 2015 when Tiger dunked his approach into the Swilcan Burn. Seven years on and he does it again, but unfortunately I’m not sitting in the grandstand!

    McIlroy -5, Morikawa +1, Schauffele -4 (16)

Hmm, just a bit tentative from McIlroy with his approach to the 17th green, and it's kicked left and leaves him with what looks like a chip over the dreaded Road Hole Bunker to get to the flag.

    Rather you than me Rory...

Although, Rory would probably rather have that one than Schauffele's next shot, as he's gone long and ended up on the road.

A big shoutout to the woman at St Andrews whose haircut is a short, tiger-coloured crop.

    Excellent commitment to the fandom.

  10. Hovland birdies 16published at 15:20 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Hovland -2, Thomas -2, Lowry E (16)

Viktor Hovland plays a truly sumptuous pitch from the left rough short of the 16th green, leaving him no more than three feet for a birdie, which he makes.

Justin Thomas has been playing stress-free golf, but he looks a little irked as his birdie try misses right. Yet another par for the world number seven.

Another par for Shane Lowry so he stays at even, which isn't bad given he was three-over walking off the fourth.

  11. Double bogey for Woodspublished at 15:18 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

Woods +2, Fitzpatrick, Homa level (1)

Homa can't put his ball underground for a birdie, but he judges it nicely and will walk off for with a par.

Fitzpatrick also starts with a friendly four.

Woods can only wish. A bad start gets worse as he pushes a three-foot putt wide, without even skirting the lip, and he has to scrawl a six on his card.

  12. Postpublished at 15:17 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    McIlroy -5, Morikawa +1, Schauffele -4 (16)

Rory McIlroy has smoked his drive on 17, over the hotel and 382 yards down there - just about clinging on to the left side of the fairway. That's some hit.

  13. 'Dramatic start from Tiger'published at 15:15 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Woods, Fitzpatrick, Homa (14:59 BST)

    Iain Carter
BBC golf correspondent on Radio 5 Live

A dramatic start from Tiger Woods - he was very unfortunate because his tee shot was beautiful, but ended up in a divot - and then he was wet!

    A double-bogey start for Woods - what an anti-climax.

Wonder if Tiger fished his ball out? Suppose he can afford to carry a fair few. We'd be rolling our sleeves up and going in.

Anyway... he's dropped short of the water and punches in a chip.

Imagine if he holes this! That would be damage limitation at its finest. Looks good but just trundles past the right on the pin.

Homa has no concerns. He's putting for a birdie...

  15. 'A collective groan'published at 15:12 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Alex Bysouth
    BBC Sport at St Andrews

Oooh, no! That’s not the one. A collective groan rings out as Tiger Woods’ ball bounces into the burn. He looks behind him for an answer, but the turf says nothing. Ouch.

  16. Morikawa strugglingpublished at 15:12 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    McIlroy -5, Morikawa +1, Schauffele -4 (16)

Pars for McIlroy and Schauffele but Morikawa's struggles continue as he drops another to slip to one over and that's already a long way back for the defending champion.

  17. Woods in the water!published at 15:11 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Woods, Fitzpatrick, Homa (14:59 BST)

Oh no! 'Mare for Woods. He's into the drink on the first.

A heavy contact sees a face full of dirt come his way, the ball pitching before Swilcan Burn and then hopping into the water.

Seems his ball was nestled in a divot.

The Burn is always hungry and will particularly enjoy gobbling up a gift from one of the all-time greats.

  18. Spieth's 99 problemspublished at 15:10 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

Spieth, Rahm, Varner III (15:10 BST)

Jordan Spieth certainly has the game to win an Open, as he's done it before of course, but we're not too sure he's got the right technique when destroying this ice cream.

Mind you, must be nice to have your own caddie to hold your 99 while you play golf...

  19. I know what to expect - Fitzpatrickpublished at 15:07 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Woods, Fitzpatrick, Homa (14:59 BST)

The last time St Andrews hosted the Open, Matt Fitzpatrick had only just turned pro.

Seven years later, the Yorkshireman is among the favourites after his US Open triumph at Brookline.

"I've been to St Andrews many times so I kind of know what to expect, but I'm sure this week is going to have a different atmosphere from normal," says 27-year-old Fitzpatrick.

"I would not say St Andrews is one of my favourite courses but to experience it in an Open is amazing."

    Scheffler -3 (5)

Scottie Scheffler has made a flying start to his Open Championship with three straight birdies putting him on three under after just five holes.

The world number one looks in ominous form here early on.
