  1. Snap hook for Poulterpublished at 07:11 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

Oh dear, there's a smattering of boos for Ian Poulter on the first tee, no doubt connected to his move to LIV Golf, and that obviously gets into his head as he hooks his tee shot wildly left.

It misses the first fairway, and races across the 18th fairway and almost out of bounds! That's a miss of about 120 yards from the Englishman. Ouch.

Early disappointment for Paul Lawrie. His yellow ball slides past from five feet on the second. Groans in the grandstand.

  3. A calm morning on the east coastpublished at 07:06 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

The conditions this morning are about as benign as you'll find at the Old Course.

There is a slight breeze, just enough to cause the flags on top of the grandstands to to flutter but not enough to cause the players too much of a headache.

The forecast is for a dry day, with the wind to pick up and reach up to 20mph, which will prick the attention.

  4. Brown as cool as you likepublished at 07:02 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Brown E (1)

Only one player has gone at this flag on the first so far, and it's 21-year-old English amateur Barclay Brown, who only just about creeps over the burn and settles his ball down just off the front edge of the green.

Brown has a laid-back air of Scottie Scheffler about him as he saunters down the first like he's having a leisurely round with his mates, not the opening hole of The Open!

He settles for a par to open up with.

Hundreds of fans were in the huge stand to the right of the first fairway and gave Paul Lawrie a hearty cheer as he strolled down to his ball. A good number rose from their seats to exit the stand and follow the 1999 champion.

Across the other side of the fairway, punters were hanging out of hotel windows and there were definitely a few in big white fluffy dressing gowns.

This was Ian Poulter during his practice round on Tuesday - posing for photos with his sons Luke and Joshua and caddie Terry Mundy on the iconic Swilcan Bridge after teeing off at 18.

The Englishman drove the green, as many have in benign conditions during practice, and spent ages up on the smooth surface rolling putts to the different pin positions, even letting his boys have a crack at trying to putt out of the dreaded Valley of Sin that guards the left of the green.

Poulter is among the cast of players to have joined the LIV Golf Series, so it will be interesting to see what reaction they get this week.

  7. Round one pinspublished at 06:42 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

Some tricky pins today with some flags tucked away to ensure that it will not be an easy first round for our contenders.

Even on the first hole, the flag is just six paces from the front meaning there's a watery grave awaiting anything that's a bit short thanks to any first hole nerves.

For a championship that originated in and was dominated by Scots in its early days, there hasn’t been a winner from this country since 1999 - that was Paul Lawrie, and he looked a little nervy stepping up to hit the opening tee shot.

There was a healthy huddle of fans in the grandstand to see him whip a long iron off the first - playing a yellow ball - and it is hard to miss this opening fairway…

It’s a little chilly on the Fife coast this morning, but things will soon hot up at the home of golf. We’re under way!

Paul Lawrie gets a lovely reception from the eager spectators who have come to see The Open officially get underway.

It's a yellow golf ball that Lawrie somehow manages to get on his tee peg despite obvious nerves flowing through his body - not sure I could manage that, let alone what follows!

It's an easy swing of an iron and he finds the first fairway with ease - although it is 125 yards wide...

Webb Simpson and Lee Min-Woo also hit the fairway and the 150th Open Championship is officially a go.

Good morning golf fans - it's like Christmas morning isn't it!

Thanks for joining us bright and early for live text commentary from the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews.

It's always a magical event when the Claret Jug comes back to the home of golf, but on this very special occasion it just seems to have an even bigger sense of occasion about it.

Now though it's almost time for all the talking to stop and the golf to start....and we can't wait!
