  1. Smooth progress for Schefflerpublished at 16:03 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Hatton +1, Niemann E , Scheffler -3 (8)

A big drive at the 342-yard ninth hole sees world number one Scottie Scheffler just roll off the green.

But it's a par four and he has a decent chance of making a birdie which would take him to four under at the turn, and four behind leader Cameron Young.

  3. 'Hovland is right in this mix'published at 16:01 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Hovland -4 (68), Lowry E (72) Thomas E (72)

Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

Viktor Hovland gets a birdie on the 18th for four under par and he is right in the mix.

The likeable Norwegian is right in this mix.

  4. 'Chances for Tiger to pull things back'published at 16:01 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Woods +3, Fitzpatrick E, Homa +1 (3)

    Lydia Hall
Ladies European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

Without tournaments you are going to lose a little bit of competition edge. Because it is Tiger Woods we are going to hope that he will find that and there are a few opportunities, a couple of par fours that he can get aggressive on with a chance to pull things back.

    Woods +3, Fitzpatrick level, Homa +1 (3)

Traffic ahead means this three-car luxury fleet must have to wait for the green light.

No chat whatsoever on the tee.

Matt Fitzpatrick looks down at the ground and he blocks out what is going on around him.

Tiger Woods, gameface well and truly on, paces around the tee-box and glares down the fairway.

Max Homa stands at the back, a bit like the shy new kid in the class, simply observing.

Fitzpatrick and Homa follow the same line left, balls using the contours to roll into the fairway from the slightly thicker stuff.

Woods slashes straight through it, ball trundling through to the other side.

  6. Hovland birdies last for 68published at 15:58 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Hovland -4 (68), Lowry E (72), Thomas E (72)

Viktor Hovland smokes his drive on the 18th. "Hold on," he cries and the ball listens - catching the right wing before rolling gleefully onto the green.

His eagle putt is on the tentative side but he confidently pops the birdie one in and that's a tidy 68, capped with three successive birdies to finish. That helps.

It's a stuttering finish from Justin Thomas, however, who can only manage a par after his double at the 17th. He shakes his head, knowing he has plenty of work to do tomorrow.

Can Shane Lowry finish on a high? No, his putt shaves the right edge and the 2019 champion also settles for a 72.

There is always a scrum of media following Tiger Woods around and today is no different. The narrow layout of the Old Course also means it’s almost elbows out in a jostle for position, much to Padraig Harrington’s amusement as he was waiting to tee off in the group ahead after a few rogues strayed off course.

  8. Bogey for Woodspublished at 15:52 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Woods +3, Fitzpatrick level, Homa +1 (3)

Woods misses the third green with his approach, not for the first time today, and this one is more surprising.

Loads of room on the left of the flag and Woods pushes it right.

A knock on leaves him with a tricky putt for par.

Another dropped shot here would be far from ideal... he's pushed it past the hole and it isn't slowing down in a hurry.

A big sigh of relief from the Tiger fans watching as he makes that putt.

Homa goes on a similar line as Woods' par putt for a birdie, but his effort also wriggles past. A four will do for the American and Matt Fitzpatrick follows suit.

    McIlroy -6 (66)

    Iain Carter
BBC golf correspondent on Radio 5 Live

I think that McIlroy will be very thrilled with that round.

When he has won his majors, he has done it from the front.

  10. 'A very good start for McIlroy'published at 15:50 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    McIlroy -6 (66)

    John Murray
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

Goodness - I think everyone thought Rory's putt was going to go in for a two. That is a nailed on birdie.

Six under par. That is a very good start.

  11. Hatton bogeys seventhpublished at 15:49 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Hatton +1, Niemann E , Scheffler -3 (7)

World number one Scottie Scheffler is moving along nicely, with no blemishes on his round so far after seven holes, and three consecutive birdies from the third.

But a bogey at the seventh puts Englishman Tyrrell Hatton on one over.

  12. Xander in touch, Morikawa strugglespublished at 15:44 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Morikawa E (72), Schauffele -3 (69)

A tough day for defending champion Collin Morikawa but level par is a decent result given he was nowhere near his best today.

Xander Schauffele is obviously in decent touch on the links after winning last week's Scottish Open, but he'll feel he's two shots short after a bogey at 17 and missing a short birdie putt on 18.

The Olympic champion is well in touch though.

  13. Spieth drains long birdie puttpublished at 15:43 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Spieth -1, Rahm E, Varner III -1 (2)

Jordan Spieth opens his account with a bang, draining a wonderful 30-footer at the second!

That matches his compatriot Harold Varner III's score. They've both made early moves with world number three Jon Rahm off to a steady start with two pars.

  14. Birdie finish for McIlroypublished at 15:41 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    McIlroy -6 (66)

McIlroy almost brings the house down with an eagle putt that only just about misses - so yet again it's a tap-in birdie for him and a six under round of 66.

Just the one bogey on his card after a brilliantly controlled round of golf, especially with the short game and the long putting, which has been top draw.

Very promising signs for McIlroy's bid for a fifth major title.

  15. Postpublished at 15:41 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Woods +2, Fitzpatrick level, Homa +1 (2)

The super-slo-mo of Tiger Woods' swing should be immortalised in an art installation at MoMA.

Not as much power pushing through from the right these days, not surprising given the injuries he sustained in that horror car crash.

The arms and shoulders are looking rhythmic, with Justin Thomas saying Woods' swing looks "as good as ever".

Having said all that, he's still pulled his tee-shot way left on the third.

  16. Hovland birdies 17 as Thomas slips backpublished at 15:39 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Hovland -3, Thomas -2, Lowry E (17)

Can Viktor Hovland claim a rare birdie on the 17th? Yes he can! Brilliant stuff from the Norwegian and he reaches three-under.

And at the end of a sobering trip up the penultimate hole, Justin Thomas signs for an ugly six and slips back down to level.

  17. Postpublished at 15:37 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Hovland -2, Thomas -2, Lowry E (16)

Now then. Justin Thomas hasn't had a bogey today, but that's about to change. He drove left on the 17th, hacked out into the bunker and could only advance the ball 18 yards out of the trap.

His fourth isn't bad, but he still has around 30 feet for a bogey, and there's still a bit of meat left on the bone for the double!

Shane Lowry's in for a par. He might find himself ahead of Thomas by the time this group finishes the Road Hole.

  18. Postpublished at 15:36 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    McIlroy -5, Morikawa +1, Schauffele -3 (17)

Rory only needs to pull out his two iron he's got this week to drive the 18th green - just about as it's down the left but about pin here with length no problems whatsoever.

Schauffele as well is just shot of the green with his tee shot and Morikawa too as this is basically an extended par three today.

    Alex Bysouth

“Tiger is bending down, that’s a good sign,” says an American fan behind me as Woods sizes up his putt.

Hold on to those positive thoughts…

Those same fans could not see where Matt Fitzpatrick’s effort went but a telling arm hung out to the right by the Yorkshireman suggested it hadn’t dropped.

  20. Postpublished at 15:34 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Woods +2, Fitzpatrick level, Homa +1 (2)

If anyone in the field knows how to handle these greens it is Tiger Woods.

The two-time winner at St Andrews has been out as much as anyone this week, sizing up all the slopes and switches.

A beautifully-judged putt sidles up the shoulder of the hole and that'll do for the par.

Next up, Homa. Uphill from 12-feet or so for the par, goes right hoping for some break, but it veers off that way and leaves a testy one back. He's got it. Phew.

Birdie putt for Fitzpatrick. The putter goes into the air... he thinks he's got it... lips out. Par-par start will do.
