I feel the sense of anticipation in the crowd. Every person has their phones out to get a glimpse of Tiger hitting his first tee shot.

Messrs Fitzpatrick and Homa follow suit, knocking their drives down the wide fairway on the first.

US Open champion Fitzpatrick may have caught his tee-shot a touch heavy and will probably go first in showing the others the way to the green.

Massive ovation for the trio as they walk along the front of the grandstand.

Nine years ago, Max Homa was a 22-year-old collegiate golfer who tweeted his hero asking for a practice round.

Today, the 31-year-old American is a seasoned pro who is about to fulfil a dream: playing with Tiger Woods for the opening two rounds of a major.

    And not just any major.

    Alex Bysouth
    BBC Sport at St Andrews

The hotel balconies are packed as Tiger tees up. The cheers for his name being announced echo around the Old Course and applause follows as he swats an iron down the fairway. We’ve had the undercard, this is the headline act as far as the fans here are concerned.

  6. Postpublished at 15:02 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Woods, Fitzpatrick, Homa (14:59 BST)

    Guess who's back.

"This is game number 45. On the tee from the USA, Tiger Woods."

Euphoric cheers as the 15-time major champion's name is read out on the St Andrews first tee.

A steady swish of a long iron, punching his ball down the middle.

    Solid start.

The walk to the first tee is a slower one for Tiger Woods these days, but that's where he is heading...

    Casey -3 (6)

England's Paul Casey, one of the most recent LIV Golf recruits, has started smoothly with birdies at three, five and six.

Casey, now 44 and playing in his 19th Open, was tied third here in 2010.

Normally you can stroll straight up and watch the players on the putting green near the first tee, but the crowd is about three deep at the moment - that means one thing, Tiger is in town.

    McIlroy -5, Morikawa E, Schauffele -4 (15)

Pars for McIlroy and Schauffele - who only just misses out on another birdie and while all eyes have been on Rory, last week's Scottish Open champion is well in contention too.

It's tough out there today for Morikawa but he's grinding away hard to keep himself in the tournament.

  13. Double bogey for Elspublished at 14:51 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Els -2 (17)

Nothing daft from the penultimate tee. Accurate drive, find the fairway, take it from there.

That's the plan on Road Hole. That's always the plan.

Oh no... Ernie Els veers of course and that spells danger.

The 52-year-old South African comes unstuck where so many golfers have come unstuck over the years, pushing his tee shot right and close to the windows of the hotel rooms.

Talk about a room with a view.

Els escapes with a six in the end. Could have been much worse.

    Woods, Fitzpatrick, Homa (14:59 BST)

    Lydia Hall
Ladies European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think that is what Tiger Woods is going to do going forward. He's going to have cherry pick the events and courses to be able to do his best.

We've walked 18 holes this morning and the ground is firm, and you can feel it in your ankles and knees today.

He's a legend of the game and he knows how to mentally prepare himself for tournaments - and we all know how much he loves this course.

  16. Lowry birdies 14published at 14:47 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Hovland -1, Thomas -2, Lowry E (14)

Shane Lowry finds himself in the McIlroy spot off the back of the 14th green. He can't quite get it stone dead like Rory, but he'll have a great chance to reclaim the shot he dropped at the last.

And he gets it! Back to level par.

It's yet another par for Justin Thomas - five in succession on the back nine - so he stays put while Viktor Hovland, who's had his fair share of bunker woes today, makes a five to stay one under.

Hovland's smiling away out there. Lowry and Thomas, on the other hand, have their game faces on.

We should expect Tiger to struggle. His game is there but his body isn't there.

Even Tiger doesn't know what he's got in the tank - and it's going to be a long 18 holes.

The Old Course isn’t the only track at St Andrews, as you can see on the map below, although you do get a sense of just how narrow the world’s most famous links is.

US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick spoke earlier this week about playing - and winning - here as a junior.

He had to come through qualifying on the New and Eden courses to reach a match-play final on the Old Course and was desperate to do so just to have a swing around the iconic site.
