  1. Bunker bounce outpublished at 14:02 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    McIlroy -5, Morikawa -1, Schauffele -3 (12)

McIlroy lets a short iron just get away from him coming out of the rough and it climbs too high and falls too short of the 13th green.

It smacks into the bunker but then rolls out at the bottom and out onto the grass. Tough to say whether he'd prefer to play it out of the sand than off a tight lie given this is a tough flag to get at today.

  3. Unflappable Rorypublished at 13:58 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Tom English
BBC Scotland's chief sports writer at St Andrews

Rory McIlroy hasn’t missed a shot so far. Never in any trouble. Never close to a suggestion of trouble. He’s five under and it looks so, so easy for him. He’s serene as he walks around.

Just shared a fist-bump with his mate Justin Thomas. Big crowds shouting his name. He’s as cool as the breeze now picking up a bit out here on the 13th tee

  4. Hovland makes par after unplayable from the bunkerpublished at 13:57 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Hovland -2, Thomas -2, Lowry E (12)

Well played, Viktor Hovland! Having taken an unplayable from the bunker, the Norwegian hacked out to 15 feet and drains his par putt - that'll feel like an eagle!

Shane Lowry's birdie try isn't his best, it slips off to the right without ever really threatening the hole.

Now it's Justin Thomas, who makes his birdie pu...oh no he doesn't! He was on the move but his ball does a 360 around the hole and stays above ground for a frustrating par.

Still though, Thomas is bogey-free and sailing through this opening round.

  5. Els misses birdie puttpublished at 13:56 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Els -5 (14)

Oh hello... Ernie Els has a sniff of a birdie on 14. More than that actually, it's sat on his plate.

This, from a few feet, for outright second place... he's pushed it right. No movement whatsoever.

Big chance missed by the 52-year-old South African.

  6. MacIntyre finishes in stylepublished at 13:52 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    MacIntyre -2 (70)

Having reached three-under at the 12th, Robert MacIntyre stumbled his way down the stretch with bogeys at the 13th and 17th.

But the Scot delights the crowd with a closing birdie and, despite three black spots on the card, that's a satisfying opening round for the left-hander.

  7. 'Young learns really quickly'published at 13:51 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Young -7, Lee -2, Macintyre -1 (18)

    Zane Scotland
Former European Tour player on BBC Radio 5 Live

Looking at Cameron Young's record, he either rips it up or he completely falls apart.

He has not necessarily got a weakness. He is just working out as he plays but he learns really quickly.

He has had an absolute blinder of a round, and looks like he is strolling around with his mates.

  8. Smith equals best startpublished at 13:51 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Smith -5 (67)

Australia's Cameron Smith is a happy boy after a five-under 67 put him into the clubhouse lead (until Cameron Young took over at the top).

"You have to be creative and be really smart," says the world number six.

He certainly did that. Three birdies on front nine and three on the back (with a bogey on the 11th) ensured he recorded his joint best start to a major.

  9. Bryson's driving iron...published at 13:50 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    DeChambeau -3 (69), Tringale -1 (71), Daly +1 (73)

    Alex Bysouth
    BBC Sport at St Andrews

I mentioned earlier how Bryson DeChambeau kept using a driving iron today, rarely reaching for the big dog in his bag, and he plans to keep using it.

"The driving iron, it's 17 degrees, 37 and a half inches. It's a low-flying machine.," he said. "It's here to stay. I have about 3,000 spin on that. But it works great out here. Just keeping it low and letting it roll for me."

On playing with John Daly, he added: "He's such a nice guy. First off, he's such a great guy, at least to me, we had a great time out there. It was a lot of fun. He's obviously wobbling a little bit around the golf course, but he's getting through it.

"And, man, for him to shoot the score he shot today was pretty impressive. I was on 13 or 14, going, 'what is he?' One over - still right there. So pretty impressive to see and the crowds obviously love him. It's great to feed off that."

  10. Hovland takes his medicinepublished at 13:50 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Hovland -2, Thomas -2, Lowry E (11)

Yes, Hovland is indeed taking an unplayable. You know what, that might be a sensible play.

He drops it into the centre of the trap and is now playing his third, which he splashes out well and it stays on the higher level of the green - he'll have around 15 feet for par, not a bad result after all that!

What a par this could be. Pros these days are used to taking the wedge out and thumping out of the flat bunkers you find in America - they're a far cry from St Andrews' cavernous traps!

  11. McIlroy closes to within threepublished at 13:49 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    McIlroy -5, Morikawa -1, Schauffele -3 (12)

Another good long-range putt from McIlroy almost results in an eagle two on 12 but there's just a bit too much pace on the ball as it hits the hole and lips out.

It's still a birdie though to take McIlroy to five under and just three off the lead.

Schauffele also makes a birdie while Morikawa scrambles a par after finding some real trouble off the tee.

  12. Postpublished at 13:45 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Hovland -2, Thomas -2, Lowry E (11)

Viktor Hovland's ball is in an absolutely disastrous spot on 12, right up against the face of the bunker.

He's got the putter out and is chatting away with his caddie. He's even talking about taking an unplayable.

    Watch this space...

  13. 'What a moment to savour for Young'published at 13:44 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Young (64), Lee (69), MacIntyre (70)

    Alistair Bruce-Ball
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

Fabulous day's golf at the home of golf on his Open debut. Hits the ball an absolutely country mile.

What a moment to saviour as Cameron Young shakes the hands of everyone around, and finishes with a three-shot lead.

    Young (64), Lee (69), MacIntyre (70)

    Richard Winton
BBC Sport Scotland at St Andrews

Plenty of appreciative applause for Cameron Young when he snaked in that birdie putt on 18 for a blemish-free 64. That’s quite some target the American has set. Bob MacIntyre, the leading home hope, birdies the last too to sit two under.

  15. Brilliant 64 for Young on debutpublished at 13:41 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Young -8 (64)

What an Open Championship debut that is from Cameron Young, with eight birdies and no bogeys for an eight-under round of 64 and a three-shot lead at St Andrews.

He hits it a country mile but he's also hit 16 greens in regulation and if his putter was just a touch warmer he could well have been a couple of shots better off.

That's some way to play in your first Open.

  16. Postpublished at 13:41 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Matsuyama -1 (11)

The Open has been a mixed bag for Hideki Matsuyama.

There have been highs of leading the tournament on four occasions, there have been lows of missed cuts in three of his past four appearances.

What will this year bring? Too early to say, but the Japanese star has made a steady start so far.

A birdie putt on the par-three 11th slithers past on the right, leaving him one under.

  17. Postpublished at 13:39 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Hovland -2, Thomas -2, Lowry E (11)

The 12th is another driveable par-four for these big-hitting pros, but while Lowry and Thomas make it onto the dancefloor, Hovland's ball bounds up the fairway but catches the bunker that guards the front of the green!

Oh no - it's right up against the face, too. More sandy adventures for the Norwegian.

  18. Postpublished at 13:35 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Els -5 (13)

The grey old town is in the sights of Ernie Els. So too is leader Cameron Young.

The South African ambles nicely up the 13th, which marks the start of the stroll back to civilisation as St Andrews appears on the horizon.

A par four on the 465-yarder for the big man backs up the trail of birdies.

  19. Postpublished at 13:34 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    McIlroy -4, Morikawa -1, Schauffele -2 (11)

Tremendous knock off the tee on 12 from McIlroy, who booms it 335 yards bang on line and the ball just comes up short of the green in a hollow just 12 yards from the flag.

  20. Westwood three off the leadpublished at 13:34 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Westwood -4 (15)

Oh hello! It's another birdie for Lee Westwood and he moves to four-under.

Defying his advancing years, just like Ernie Els.
