  1. Birdie start for Johnsonpublished at 13:30 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Johnson -1 (1)

Cracking start for Dustin Johnson, who has gone close here before and starts with a nerveless wedge in to that front flag before casually knocking in the putt for a three.

    Easy.

  2. Young keeps card blemish freepublished at 13:25 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Young -7, Lee -3, MacIntyre -2 (18)

    Richard Winton

Played, Cameron Young. The leader two putts from downtown on 17 to save par. Min-woo Lee does likewise but Robert MacIntyre spurts his par putt past. “That’s a shocker,” murmurs a rueful observer green side.

  3. Westwood on the movepublished at 13:21 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Westwood -3 (14)

Shane Lowry isn't the only player bouncing back after an early double as Lee Westwood - playing in his 27th (!) Open Championship - birdies the 14th to reach three-under.

That's five birdies and no bogeys for the 49-year-old since taking six at the second.

Westwood was runner-up to fellow LIV Golf player Louis Oosthuizen here in 2010, albeit seven shots adrift of the runaway South African.

Time for another dip into the Open archives, and a prime example of the highs and lows of golf.

In the 1995 Open Championship Costantino Rocca secured an incredible birdie on 18 to force a play-off with eventual winner John Daly at St Andrews.

  5. Els rolling back the yearspublished at 13:19 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Els -5 (12)

The Big Easy is making the Old Course look, well, easy.

Two-time champion Ernie Els is seeing more birdies at the moment than an ornithologist.

Tweet-tweets drop on the eighth, ninth, 11th and 12th... Els is into tied second!

For those of you into omens, guess what years the 52-year-old won the Open?

Yep, 2002 and 2012. Will 2022 follow? Stranger things have happened....

  6. 'McIlroy charge stalled a little'published at 13:18 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    McIlroy -4, Morikawa -1, Schauffele -2 (12)

    John Murray
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

The McIlroy charge on the front nine has just stalled a little. He's parred the last four but he's right in there.

Pars all round for this group as they all stay under par for their rounds, with McIlroy leading the way but Morikawa and Schauffele by no means out of it given how good they are.

  8. Lowry battles backpublished at 13:16 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Hovland -2, Thomas -2, Lowry E (10)

That's more like it from Shane Lowry!

Three over after four, the Irishman judges a left-to-righter across the 10th green to perfection and gets back to even level par. Impressive resilience from the 2019 Champion Golfer of the Year.

Viktor Hovland has a lengthy birdie putt of his own, but his comes up just shy while Justin Thomas also settles for par.

  9. 'Smith will be very happy with that start'published at 13:13 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Smith (67), Koepka (73), Power (73)

    Lydia Hall
Ladies European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

Cameron Smith caps a very tidy round of golf and I think he'll be really happy with that start. Very smart and played good golf, and a great birdie to finish.

If you’ve not got a ticket this week there are far worse places you could find yourself than on the balcony above the Old Course Shop, overlooking the 18th green.

There’s a string of fine hotels stretching down the side of the fairway too, so expect to see hollering fans hanging out of windows come Sunday evening as the leaders stroll towards a potential Claret Jug.

  11. New clubhouse leaderpublished at 13:12 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Smith -5 (67)

You beauty! Cameron Smith may or may not have muttered that under his breath when his birdie putt on the last goes south.

A superb finish for the Australian, breaking his run of five straight pars with a three on the 356-yard Tom Morris.

Straight in at the top goes the new clubhouse leader.

  14. Camerons lead the waypublished at 13:09 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Andy Stevenson
Reporter on BBC Radio 5 Live

Cameron comes from the Gaelic word “cam sron,” meaning “crooked nose”. It's also thought to come from “cam abhainn,” which means “crooked river.”

There are many locations called Cameron in Scotland, which is how it got its roots as a surname.

    Latest leaderboard

    -7 Cameron Young (16)

    -5 Cameron Smith (67)

    -5 Ernie Els (12)

  15. Aussie stars shiningpublished at 13:08 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

Any Aussies who have made the trip up to Scotland - and a few have certainly done the Wimbledon-St Andrews double - will be happy with what they've seen so far.

As well as Cameron Smith starting well, his cobbers Brad Kennedy and Min-woo Lee are also on the first page of the leaderboard.

Another of their compatriots, Lucas Herbert, is a shot behind.

A bonza morning for the Aussies on the Old Course.

Leader Cameron Young lets rip on 17 having compiled a tremendous round so far. The American can also smell his lunch. Much of his round has been spent blethering with Bob MacIntyre, who’s growing momentum was halted by an ugly double on 13. He’s still in the picture, though, at two under.

  18. 'Smith's lag putting has been exceptional'published at 13:05 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

Cameron Smith's lag putting today has just been exceptional.

You just need to be so patient and he has played smart golf, which is what you need here.

Huge applause for John Daly as he finishes off, almost making a lengthy eagle putt as the sound of bagpipes drifts across the 18th - this green is right on the corner of town, and you can see it from the road.

Handshakes all round for this trio. That was a lot of fun.

    McIlroy -4, Morikawa -1, Schauffele -2 (10)

I tell you what, Rory McIlroy has got the cheat code for these greens so far, as he rolls one from 44 feet right up to the edge of the cup with minimal fuss.

Absolutely no dramas on the dancefloor for McIlroy so far today - if he can keep this putting display up he'll be tough to beat.

Meanwhile, Collin Morikawa has finally woken up and started the defence of his title with successive birdies putting him back into red numbers.
