Barclay Brown, the 21-year-old amateur, speaking to Sky Sports:

"It's been unbelievable, I couldn't think when I was playing Open qualifying what it would actually be like here but it's been absolutely amazing, I've been blown away by it.

"My parents are here, I've four or five friends here, my brother's here and my girlfriend so I've got a nice group of people who have managed to come up which I really appreciate."

On watching fellow Sheffield man Matt Fitzpatrick's US Open triumph: "It's unbelievable. He's just gotten better and better since he turned pro so it's been amazing to watch."

  3. Forgotten your kit JT?published at 12:20 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

OK, so let's settle this once and for all. For me, the Justin Thomas trousers are fine, but coupled with those shoes, it's like he's doing PE at school when he's forgotten his kit.

School shoes on (most likely Kickers, although others are available) with ill-fitting joggers out of lost property, running around playing football.

Am I right or wrong? Thumbs up if you like JT's outfit, thumbs down if you agree with me....

    McIlroy -4, Morikawa +1, Schauffele -2 (8)

A safe par for defending champion Morikawa but he's not quite at the races so far today.

McIlroy has got the speed of these greens nailed right now as he sends another huge effort tramlining all the way to the hole where it settles just beyond the cup.

I'd give him that one back all day long, and he makes no mistake.

John Daly has a tricky lie on the edge of a bunker but clips a superb approach to within gimme length of the pin - Cameron Tringale is already on his way up there and turns round to give the American a big double thumbs up.

On the undulating 15th green, the ball disappeared behind a slope and when a huge cheer went up plenty of fans thought Daly had drained it from there!

  7. Double for MacIntyrepublished at 12:15 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    MacIntyre -2 (13)

Ah, Robert MacIntyre was going along so smoothly until he reached the par-four 13th where he's just taken a damaging double bogey six.

A lot of his solid early work undone.

  8. Els rolling back the yearspublished at 12:10 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Els -3 (9)

    Peter Scrivener
    BBC Sport at St Andrews

South Africa's Ernie Els won the first Open I ever attended, way back in 2002 when storms battered a prime Tiger Woods into submission at Muirfield.

He started his front nine with two birdies and has finished it with two more - the only blot on his card so far is a five on the par-four fourth.

Spare a thought for Sepp Straka though. He's the first to bogey the ninth after 44 players before him had negotiated the driveable par-four hole in par or birdie - with Ian Poulter firing in the solitary eagle so far.

  9. Hat-trick for McIlroy!published at 12:06 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    McIlroy -4, Morikawa +1, Schauffele -2 (7)

It's three in a row for McIlroy with a birdie on seven and this is starting to look an awful lot like a charge to me...

McIlroy's game looks razor sharp and he's doing all the things he need to do well - driving well, wedge play has been sharp and his putter has been rock solid.

St Andrews is starting to heat up.

    Hovland -1, Thomas -1, Lowry +2 (6)

Shane Lowry's bid for back-to-back birdies sneaks past on the right-hand side at the sixth as a disgruntled expression reappears on the Irishman's bearded face.

No birdies for Viktor Hovland or Justin Thomas, either, so it's as you were for that star-studded three-ball.

  11. Bogey for Kimpublished at 12:04 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Kim -4 (16)

JooHyung Kim drops back into a group on a four under par with a bogey on the par-four 16th. It's a group that is just about to get bigger though given the huge roar heard across on the seventh...

If there’s one thing the crowd want to see, it’s Bryson DeChambeau whip the driver out of his bag.

Quite a few around the tee box have been disappointed, with the American reaching for his iron on quite a few holes today instead.

There was a sarcastic “boo” when he did so at the last, with John Daly taking his cue to butt in with his own gag.

  16. Another birdie for Bobpublished at 11:56 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    MacIntyre -4 (12)

    Birdies everywhere you look!

Robert MacIntyre's had a few. Five in fact, with his latest a tidy three at the 12th that moves him to four under.

  17. Birdie finish for Poultspublished at 11:55 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Poulter -3 (69)

Ian Poulter's round started with a few boos and a horrible snap hook off the first tee.

He hasn't let that unnerve him, however, and has played some lovely golf this morning, highlighted by that stunning eagle at the ninth.

Poulter dropped a shot at 14 to slip back to two-under but he finishes with a birdie at 18 and cards an encouraging 69.

  18. Birdies birdies everywherepublished at 11:54 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    C Smith -4 (13), Kim -5 (15)

It's a bit of a birdie-fest so far this morning.

Australia's Cameron Smith shuffles a couple of spots up the leaderboard with his latest one, on the par-four 12th.

And South Korea's JooHyung Kim takes sole control of second place with his fifth of a bogey-free round on the 15th.

  19. Young goes to seven underpublished at 11:54 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Young -7 (12)

Cameron Young makes another one! He's just biffed a drive 362 yards on the 12th, off the back of the green in fact, from where he gets up-and-down in two for a birdie.

This is some first ever round in an Open for the American.

  20. Willett moving in right directionpublished at 11:52 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Willett -3 (10)

Danny Willett finished tied sixth at St Andrews in 2015 and he's just rolled in his fourth birdie this morning to get to three-under!

Great to see the 2016 Masters winner going well.
