Bryson DeChambeau reaches the green off the tee at 12 and almost makes it up on to the table top where the pin is located, just half a yard short.

John Daly says I’ll have some or that and lashes his up on to the smooth stuff too.

It’s a huge putting surface as it doubles up with the sixth green, could fit a decent football pitch on there.

    McIlroy -1, Morikawa +1, Schauffele E (4)

McIlroy tickles in a par putt, and Morikawa and Schauffele also make par fours and it's on we go to the fifth.

Might be a good time for a Rory flashback - look at that hair from 11 years ago!

  3. Brown eyes opening 67published at 11:05 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Brown -4 (17)

High-flying English amateur Barclay Brown reduces the Road Hole to three blows and wallops his drive at the 18th, making it over the Valley of Sin and onto the left-hand side of the green.

Two putts from there and he'll sign for an opening 67.

  4. Eagle finish for Lawriepublished at 11:01 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Lawrie +2 (74), Lee -3 (69), Simpson -1 (71)

Scotland's Paul Lawrie, who came from 10 shots back to triumph at Carnoustie in 1999, struck the opening shot at 06:35 BST.

He also struck the opening shot at St Andrews in 2010 but eventually missed the cut and he'll have work to do tomorrow in order to stick around for the weekend after an opening 74.

But he eagled the 18th after driving the green to five feet from the pin - what a lovely way to finish.

Australia's Min Woo Lee has had the best round though and sets the target for the rest to follow, rolling in a two-putt par.

American Webb Simpson, who reached the turn at three under, found life a little tougher coming home. A four hour and 22 minute round...

    McIlroy -1, Morikawa +1, Schauffele E (3)

McIlroy finds the dancefloor safely and then rolls his lengthy birdie try just short - it's probably his worst lag putt effort of the day but he'll still fancy making par.

  6. Hovland picks up anotherpublished at 10:55 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Hovland -2, Thomas E, Lowry +2 (3)

Viktor Hovland is looking sharp early doors and he rolls in his short birdie putt at the third to get to two-under.

Oh what Shane Lowry would have given for that start.

  7. Smith going lowpublished at 10:52 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    C Smith -4 (10), Lee -3 (17)

Australia's Cameron Smith is the latest to get to four under par.

The winner of this year's Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass played the first nine in 33 shots and he's continued his bogey-free start with a fourth birdie of the morning on the 10th.

And as he does that, his compatriot Min Woo Lee drops out of a share of the lead with a bogey on the notoriously difficult par-four 17th.

  8. Poulter drops backpublished at 10:51 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Poulter -2 (14)

Ian Poulter's progress is halted with an untidy six on the par-five 14th having flown the green with his third. Back to two-under.

Two birdies, an eagle and two bogeys for the 46-year-old this morning.

  9. Brooks goes back-to-backpublished at 10:49 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Koepka -1 (10)

Brooks Koepka birdies nine and 10 to get back under par for the tournament and looking in good shape.

  10. England's Rai gets late Open spotpublished at 10:49 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

A statement from the R&A: Erik Van Rooyen has withdrawn from The 150th Open at St Andrews because of a neck injury. He will be replaced by Aaron Rai of England.

Van Rooyen was due to tee off at 13:48 - I hope Aaron has his phone switched on. Three hours to get down to the course and hit a few warm-up balls.

I wonder if anyone is daring to speak to Alex Noren... (see 08:35 entry...)

It's not want you want to here from Rory McIlroy, but it's not as bad as he feared as his drive settles just in some light rough on the fourth, and he's now in a great position for his second shot.

  12. Bob's on the movepublished at 10:47 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    MacIntyre -2 (8)

Robert MacIntyre has two top-eight finishes in his two previous Open appearances and the Scot's making steady progress this morning.

He drains a lovely 13-foot birdie putt at the par-three eighth and moves back to two-under after a dropped shot at the sixth.

    All smiles.

    McIlroy -1, Morikawa +1, Schauffele E (3)

Nice approach from McIlroy, pin high and gives himself an outside look at birdie from 30 feet. He doesn't make it but it's a nice roll and stress-free par.

Morikawa follows McIlroy in for a four but Schauffele goes one better with a birdie three after getting a read from Morikawa.

Further to Billy Horschel's hoodie (10:16), what about Justin Thomas' gear? He's also gone with a hoodie but teamed it with what appears to be a pair of trackie bottoms. And are those bare ankles? He looks to me - a noted fashionmonger, obviously - like he's nipping down the shop for a half loaf.

  16. Lowry slumps to double bogeypublished at 10:39 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Lowry +2, Hovland -1, Thomas E (2)

As expected, Shane Lowry is forced to take a penalty drop with his drive having found the gorse bushes on the second.

He digs his third out to just short of the green, from where he trickles his putt four feet past.

Oh no! His bogey putt slides by on the left and it's a damaging double which puts the Irishman on the back foot early on.

Steadier stuff from Viktor Hovland and Justin Thomas, who both two-putt for par.

  17. Postpublished at 10:37 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    McIlroy -1, Morikawa +1, Schauffele +1 (2)

McIlroy winds up and unleashes a big drive at the third - 316 yards to be precise and he's left with just 72 to go to the green, although he is in the rough.

His American playing partners both find the fairway nicely.

A healthy crowd greeted 2015 champion golfer Zach Johnson as he began his opening round around the course where he claimed his second major. It's been a solid, if unspectacular, start by the 46-year-old American, who has had four top-25 finishes in 20 events this season.

Fleetwood, Molinari and Hoshino all ended up right of the green at eight and slid off down the bank towards a bunker on the right of the 10th fairway.

The others have putter in hand but Molinari runs a little iron shot up the slope and it pops into the air off a sprinkler head!
