  1. WATCH: Ian Poulter's huge eagle puttpublished at 10:30 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

Officially a 162-foot putt made by Ian Poulter earlier for eagle - we won't see a longer one today, will we?

  2. Lowry in troublepublished at 10:29 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Lowry E, Hovland -1, Thomas E (1)

Oh dear, Shane Lowry's drive at the second strays right, bounces off the path and jumps into the bushes!

We'll keep you posted on that one, but it doesn't look good...

  3. Bogey for Morikawapublished at 10:29 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    McIlroy -1, Morikawa +1, Schauffele +1 (2)

Tremendous lag putt from McIlroy on two with a couple of breaks and a huge slope to navigate - the signs are pretty good so far with the flat stick.

Morikawa is not so hot from long range and makes a three-putt bogey.

  4. Postpublished at 10:24 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    McIlroy -1, Morikawa E, Schauffele +1 (1)

McIlroy is just in the right rough off the second, and his approach just balloons up a bit and drops just short of the green, but in a big hollow that will make it a tough up-and-down.

Morikawa and Schauffele have both played safe and hit it to the back of the green.

  5. Hovland starts with birdiepublished at 10:24 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Lowry E, Hovland -1, Thomas E (1)

Three fine approaches to the opening green from this morning's second supergroup.

2019 champion Shane Lowry and this year's US PGA winner Justin Thomas both fail with their birdie tries, but Viktor Hovland doesn't squander his opportunity and the Norwegian makes an immediate statement of intent.

Hovland is regarded as one of the most promising young talents in the world, so it's remarkable that he's yet to post a top-10 finish in a major.

    Maybe that'll change this week.

  6. Bryson drives the ninthpublished at 10:19 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    DeChambeau -2 (8)

Bryson DeChambeau bashes a three wood off the ninth tee and it skips and bounds on and trundles actually across the green and just off the back pretty comfortably.

    Too much club Bryson...

“Enjoy that money, Phil,” is the heckle from one spectator after Mickelson plays his tee shot at the par-three 11th. It’s met with a smattering of laughs.

Not from the man himself, of course. Lefty doesn’t even flinch.

  8. Leaders get to four underpublished at 10:16 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Lee -4 (15), Kim -4 (9), Young -4 (6)

Australian Minjee Lee won the US Women's Open a little earlier this year. Her younger brother Min Woo Lee currently leads The Open.

An eagle three on the par-five 14th sees him get to four under.

They were the first brother and sister to win their respective US Junior Amateur titles - I reckon this might trump that if Min Woo can keep this pace up.

He has company at the top of the leaderboard though. South Korea's Joo-Hyung Kim has taken 32 shots for the front nine, while American Cameron Young has birdied four of his first six holes.

Right, time to see what type of golfing audience we've got here right now - by asking about Billy Horschel wearing a hoodie at St Andrews for the 150th Open Championship.

    Thumbs up or down?

  10. Amateur Brown one off the leadpublished at 10:16 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Brown -3 (14)

St Andrews Opens tend to produce surprise amateur contenders - remember Irishman Paul Dunne led here after 54 holes in 2015.

Well, there's still a long way to go, but Barclay Brown finds himself among the leaders after carding his fourth birdie of the day at 14.

Sheffield man Brown, like US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick, is a member of Hallamshire Golf Club. Brown also partnered Fitzpatrick’s brother Alex in last year's Walker Cup.

Dream start for the 21-year-old qualifier!

  11. McIlroy drains birdie puttpublished at 10:15 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    McIlroy -1, Morikawa E, Schauffele +1 (1)

Wonderful start from McIlroy who drains a lengthy 55-foot putt on the first green to instantly jump out to one under.

McIlroy's putting has been vastly improved this year from previous years - and a huge factor this week will be range putting, mainly making sure you get down in two but if you scare the hole enough you'll get a few to drop..

Schauffele surprisingly leaves his birdie putt miles short, and lips out with his par save so drops a shot right away, while Morikawa makes a par.

    Richard Winton

There are all manner of accoutrements littering the practice putting green as the late morning starters get their eye in. Taut lengths of string, tees protruding neatly from the surface, and various other odds and ends clutter up the surface. Does any of it help, or are they just a placebo?

  13. Poults birdies 12published at 10:10 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Poulter -3 (-12)

Ian Poulter missed the cut here in 2015 but he's faring much better so far this morning.

The 2008 Open runner-up drives the par-four 12th and happily takes a two-putt birdie to get back to -3 after the dropped shot on 11.

    One off the early pace.

  14. McIlroy under waypublished at 10:04 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    McIlroy, Morikawa, Schauffele

Rory McIlroy, decked out in a brown and yellow outfit, sends a low baby draw down the first fairway to get his round underway alongside reigning champion Collin Morikawa and red-hot Xander Schauffele, who won the Scottish Open last week.

This far corner of the course can get a little congested with several holes playing across each other, but it also makes a great vantage point for fans.

That means there’s quite a long queue to get in the stand next to the par-three 11th, where you can also see the eighth and 10th greens.

There’s also a long line for coffee, gotta be well stocked once you find a seat.

BBC Sport looks back at the 2010 Open Championship when Rory McIlroy shot a record opening round at an Open with a 63 at St Andrews.

Can he do something similar again today? He's been in great form in the majors this year without ending his long wait for a fifth.

Can he win this one this week though? Let us know with your thumbs....

  17. Three in a row for DeChambeaupublished at 09:53 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    DeChambeau -2 (7)

Bryson DeChambeau flexes his muscles and booms his drive at seven almost right over the grandstand and 11th tee and it's bang on line, just managing to tiptoe over Shell bunker that guards the green.

It's a soft landing and leaves him a tricky putt out of a hollow, and although he almost cans it for an eagle he has to settle for birdie.

That's three in a row though as the American makes a move.

  18. Chip off the old blockpublished at 09:50 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Daly +2 (6)

Former Open champion John Daly has got his son, Little John, on the bag this week - and if you've seen junior Daly play golf you'll know that he goes at it just like his old man.

They're an iconic duo to follow this week.

    Early leaders:

    • Wu (10)

If you’re trying to gauge the temperature at St Andrews, Bryson DeChambeau’s caddie has just whipped off his trousers to reveal a pair of shorts below. Some of us had them on at half 6 this morning…

The sun is finally breaking through. John Daly’s having a quick smoke. The smell of bacon baps is wafting across the Old Course in the gentle breeze.

And Bryson is about to try and drive the green at seven…
